Hi, the most reported common side effect of amitiza is diarrhea. It can also cause abdominal distension, nausea and abdominal pain. It can also cause fecal incontinence. Like your doctor suggested you can continue this medications for a few more days before you give up this medication. Regards.

My daughter began amitiza and it has worked wonderfully, however, she is spotting in between periods. Is this common?

This AM the nausea was so bad I called the GI group and was told to stop taking the Amitiza for a few weeks and that the most common side effect of the drug is extreme nausea and it should ALWAYS be taken on a full stomach. In it's place she put me on 3 Metamucil tablets each morning and 1 Colace, then 1 Colace at night. We are trying this for 2/3 weeks and then maybe ease back in to the Amitiza.

I have heart problems so wasn't thrilled with the side effects that I was reading and wanted to hear from others that had taken it. Thank you!

And I have been prescribed Amitiza only for it to make extremely sick. Just wondering what possible drugs this specialist could possibly have that other doctors cant prescribe. I dont want to be a guinea pig and be trying stuff that is not safe. I dont want my condition to become worse because of them where I cant later have surgery etc.

Thank you for responding! I am able to have bowel movements but must take an incredible amount of fiber pills, powders. Also take Lactulose and Amitiza. However, in order to take the Amitiza must take a nausea pill before and after. Often times still have nausea with the Amitiza and not convinced it helps all that much. I've been at this for 8 yrs and have done everything but stand on my head. Without pills and powder - bowel movements are difficult and every 3-5 days. And only partial.

I have systemic sclerosis and have chronic gastric ulcers (no H-pyloric) and food bezoars for 10 years. I am supposed to be on liquid diet (I am not) and have gastroparesis and have gained 40 pounds in past two years. I have hypothyroidism for 33 years and empty sella syndrome. Because my TSH is always messed up docs keeping reducing levothyroxine dramatically, 2 years ago I was in a coma due to hypothyroidism and UTI which went to brain.

I went to a gastroenterologist the next day and she thought it was IBS and prescribed me Amitiza and Bentyl. I have been on the Amitiza and it makes me have frequent watery BMs...and the Bentyl does not do much. The pain is constant and I feel like I'm pregnant I'm so bloated (I'm not!) could this really just be IBS? Could the pain be reproductive (i.e. ovarian cysts) I'm going to school for nursing and it is really interfering with my education...

Hi Candy, I really don't know how common it is but I also have IBS that just keeps getting worse... I only have bowel movements once maybe twice a month... I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth.. Also, I used to never have bloating and pain in between those movements... But, in the last few months my stomach stays distended, I cramp until I double over, and nothing seems to help... My doctor said it's a combination of the MS and the medication...

I did and its been a month and it still hasnt healed. Having trouble with constipation and I am on amitiza. Any advice is welcome. As well, my doctor told me to take a stool softner twice a day to. Thinking about starting to eat soup.

I had an endoscopy and found out I have a large duodenal ulcer with partial outlet obscrtuction.Can I take Amitiza with this ulcer?I was supposed to have a colonoscopy but I couldn't get completely clear.I was put on a drug to help heal the ulcer and a proton pump inhibitor.I just want to know if it is safe to amitiza.I am on opiods so I need it.

I have done the doxycycline and a few other therepies that my gastrointerologist recommended. They would work for a while and then would get worse agan. I am now taking Amitiza and am doing pretty good with it. Though I have now started noticing a correlation to my menstral cycle and the onset of these symptoms. A week before i start my period I will stop haveing BMs. Completely. I won't go again until I start. And then I usually have to induce it somehow.

You can try using other medications for constipation to see if that works better. Amitiza is a new one out there but sometimes certain ones work better than others. Has your doctor ever mentioned abdominal migraines?

As for the constipation, try taking one capful (the little cup thing that comes with the bottle) of milk of magnesia every day. Talk to your GP about Amitiza, you might be a good canidate for that, as well. Not every constipation problem needs fiber as most people (and some doctors believe)-I did that for years and my problem continued. I laid off the fiber as directed by my gastroenterologist, took the Amitiza & m of m each night and my troubles were over.

Long and twisted colon that tends to slow passage of stool and cause constipation that can be quite severe. I take Miralax and Amitiza for mine. They work, but are expensive - especially the latter.

It worse though. So now I have 2 pacemakers one for my tummy and one for my heart. Cytotec is not for woman that are going to because pregnant because it can make you lose a baby. But with all the drugs and injections I do ok. The reason why I am always looking for more info is because I'm 27 and getting botox every 3 months for the rest of my life is alot. Thanks and yes...I've had all the tests you mentioned above done. The only ones that showed anything was the CT scan showed a small kidney stone and the gastric emptying scan showed moderate to severe gastroparentsis. I need to work on the multiple smaller meals...I typically try to keep semi-healthy snacks at work and just eat dinner. I do try to eat low-fat...maybe I'm eating fiborous things and don't realize it. We tried amitiza and it did nothing...

I have these bloated, distention, nausea, constipation (sometimes) for about 20 years. Colonoscopy and gastroenteroscopyn always show clear and fine. I was prescribed Amitiza 8 mg 2 years ago. There was a point that I felt ok for 3 months in a row recently. But unfortunately, it came back again. It really bothers my daily life and work. What should I do?

Had breast reconstruction over 10 years ago - TRAM flap with abdominal muscle. Digestion issues worsen every year. Physician prescribed Amitiza last year but now have to meet new-year deductible before I can benefit from manufacturer coupon. Symptoms now include increased, painful bloating, no burps, no flatulence and no bowel movement after about 5 days drinking only water. Usually fruit or juice will help but nothing is helping or happening. Suggestions welcome and encouraged.

This looks like "official" matter. What meds are in question? Colonoscopy showed something? IBS is not a disease at all, and there's no drugs for IBS, as I know (my opinion). Zelnorm was even withdrawn from the (U.S.) market last year, now it might be back again.

i feel pain in my right thigh immediately after i get up after using the toilet. it stays for some time & then goes away after some time when i get going for other works, but sometimes it stays for quite long. what should i do??

Oh, and it seems like it works best if I take it separate from meals, and don't drink much water during meals (because water dilutes the acid that is important for digestion, I think). And don't drink it immediately after the water turns clear for best effect. Wait 30-60 minutes whenever possible and see if it makes a difference like it seems to for me.

I still have GI issues though and suffer from constipation. My doctor started me on Amitiza and is checking me for SIBO again, have tested positive before,and is doing a hydrogen/methane breathe test. He suspects methane producing SIBO. But I have slow motility regardless though and will have more overgrowths in general if I don't keep things moving. My primary care doctor had me try LDN (low dose naltrexone) but I couldn't tolerate it.

She agrees, that I need more, with the bowel not functioning, and says I need to take the Amitiza, same time, each day, and no more skipping 2 days for ANY reason. (I got a good lecture this morning! The Amitiza had actually begun to work the first two days I took it last week, but then, I skipped it for two days, not wanting to have the headcache while my grand-babies were here.) On Monday, my dose of Amitiza increases to twice a day.
