Common Questions and Answers about Allergies to rice cereal

allergies

Avatar f tn 4 months is when the doc told us we could start. And I had to use oatmeal instead of rice cereal due to my son getting constipated from the rice cereal.
Avatar f tn She used to sleep through the night and not wake up until around 430. Everybody says to put rice cereal in her bottle before bed, but I read if you do it before 4 months it can cause digestive problems, constipation and allergies. I'm asking her pediatrician at her 2 month check up tomorrow but has anybody had any experience with this?
290867 tn?1333569278 Also for future refrence since my son is on Prosobee Lipil. Is that going to change how to mix the cereal. I know you use the formula to mix the rice cereal with so I dont think it will change the preperation of it...
254689 tn?1251180040 I gave all of my children rice cereal by time they were 3 wks old. They all did fine. My grandmother told me to do this for my children. Plus, my grandmother made sure that the kids were fed w/a spoon. There is a way to feed 3 wk old infants w/a baby spoon. Their belief is that only lazy mothers put cereal in baby bottles. This is something thats done in my cultural. If u feel comfortable giving ur infant rice cereal, then do so. I did.
Avatar f tn So around 4 months I add rice cereal to fruits? How do I mix it??
145992 tn?1341345074 And for the constipated thing, once he gets used to eating solids(cereal) I would introduce the rice cereal. My son eats both and he does fine. I just also started to give him juice and/or water every day so that helps with any bowel issues as well.
964234 tn?1331949207 So, with the help of my pediatrician we decided to start Franky on rice cereal at 4 months old. She said he was ready at his last appointment, but to wait until the week of his 4 month birthday. So, we gave it a try last night and he loved it. Took to it very well and gobbled up the tablespoon we offered him. He ate that at dinner time with us, and resumed to have his normal bottle after his bath before bed.
467126 tn?1283144858 i would start with just one to two spoonfuls of rice cereal a day to see how her tummy reacts to it and if she seems ok you can increase the amount little by little and if she is okay with that.. add a couple teaspoons of veggie or fruits... the decision is yours... you are her mommy .. so its up to you to do what you think is best for your child. my daughter has done everything early has far as solids.. she had rice cereal at 2 weeks old.. and yes it was in a bottle...
Avatar f tn I was just wondering because i am a first time mom and as you all know when ur a first time mom u talk to other moms that has had a few kids and they give advice and sometimes u take it well in that case thats me i took the advice i started it when my baby was 2 or 3 weeks old also i didnt know babies can only have it at 4 to 6 months so i freaked when i googled it all and it said all that so to the point my son was doing so good on the rice cereal and after reading all that and taking him off t
2020005 tn?1476658962 i tried a tiny bit of rice cereal since even the box says from 4 months, which she'll be in a few days, it's going to take some work but she likes it!
349463 tn?1333571576 The point of starting rice cereal/baby food is not for the daily intake. It is to help them learn how to take the food and swallow it. I don't think that because I am starting my son on cereal or "food" that he is going to be overweight. My son was sleeping well long before I started rice cereal. I think that starting them eating healthy early is a key to keeping children from being "overweight".
172826 tn?1423422956 as for breastfed babies, this is exactly why they say to wait until 6 months to introduce anything- rice, oatmeal, fruits, etc... A breastfed baby has 2 advantages when it comes to allergies- one is that their immune systems get a boost from breastmilk (allergies are immune responses). the second is that they can go for months (6 months or beyond) without having ANY foreign proteins introduced into their systems, especially if they don't get formula.
467126 tn?1283144858 He has bad reflux, so his pediatrician recommended doing this. It has helped tremendously! We were advised to add 1 tablespoon of rice cereal to every four ounces of formula in his bottle. I see many people say not until 6 months..Everyone I know with children, introduced rice cereal at 4 months. We had to do it at 2 months b.c of reflux issues, but it is always best to consult your pediatrician! Good luck!
Avatar f tn I have read several times that rice cereal will help a child feel better. And when I read that people are adding rice cereal to bottles....ugggg....that should only be done if the child as stomach reflex. Thank for your advice everyone.
Avatar f tn So husband and I are really contemplating adding rice cereal to his last bottle before we go to bed. Just enough to get him to maybe drop 1 night feeding and be fully hungry at the next. What are some of your thoughts. I know they say 3 months or older but this whole waking up just to feed 1.5 ounces every 2 hours is super annoying. And we're wasting a lot of formula.

Avatar f tn This information should be in your well baby packet. Are you breastfeeding or feeding your baby formula. We waited until our daughter was 6 months before giving her cereal. She really didn't need the extra calories to sustain her. Can I ask why you would want to start at 4 months?
341551 tn?1266980730 My son is 15 weeks old and we're thinking of adding Rice Cereal to a couple of his bottles. I was just wondering which brands of rice cereal you moms have tried and liked. Any you recommend?
Avatar f tn When can I give my 9 week old rice cereal (not in the bottle)? My mom says I should give it to him now because I am breastfeeding him every two hours sometimes every other hour, even in the middle of the night.
316994 tn?1259003438 I started Isabelle on cereal between 4-5 months and our pediatrician also said it was fine. She has done great with it! Many people on here say to wait until 6 months but don't let that make you feel bad if you start earlier. One of my nephews was started at about 2 months (he was a big hungry boy!) and he turned out fine with no problems whatsoever. My other 5 nieces and nephews started at 4 months and all are fine as well!!
383536 tn?1225030613 when you start feeding yor baby rice cereal how often are you supposed to?
Avatar f tn Is it ok to put a lil cereal in my baby's bottle. My gmaw , mom && mother in law keep saying give him just a lil so he'll be fuller and sleep through the night. My pediatrician said it was fine jus don't put it n all the bottles basically skip one bottle.
Avatar f tn He is getting to be a big boy. He was more than ready for the rice cereal. He only cried for a minute and that was it.
Avatar f tn I agree with aleahfleming. My sons pediatrician said to start giving him a spoonful of rice cereal everyday mixed with his formula. A day or two after he became constipated, cheeks were flushed, and he began getting dry patches on his upper arms. Not trying to scare you since every baby is different but when I did some searching, i came across an article that says babies really cant digest certain starches until 2 years old and that only pureed fruits/veggoes should be given at 6 months.
341551 tn?1266980730 I do 1 oz of rice cereal and also give her about 1-2 oz's of baby food. We've done sweet potatos and just started peas. We feed Mikayla the rice cereal though. I read somewhere that it isn't good to put the cereal in the bottle because then they may not want to eat it by spoon (because they are used to it in the bottle). I've never put it in her bottle so I really don't know how true that is.
688845 tn?1325182236 My daughter did not like rice cereal so I never did feed it to her. I went to oat meal instead. At 9 months old she eats oat meal and 2 oz of fruit for breakfast then whatever I'm having for lunch and dinner. She's got 10 teeth so she went to table food pretty early. It's great that you want to start learning now but it will definitely be a try and see kind of thing.
232328 tn?1207090071 I will tell you this. Rice cereal did not work for my son. I had to go to oatmeal. DD never had rice cereal, she started right on oatmeal. Now, I was very particular about allergies and nutrition aspect with both my kids. They only ever tried one thing for 2 weeks and then something new. But I waited 2 weeks before each new thing. As for being 4 mos old.....I personally would wait unless you absolutely feel she needs it....go with your mother's instinct.
Avatar f tn Do not replace any formula right now. There is no nutritional value to cereal, it's just for taste and texture and to get her used to eating solids. So you don't want to replace anything just yet. Start out with cereal in the morning only once a day. After the few weeks have passed add in a veggie but make sure you only try one veggie once a week. For allergies.
