Alendronate osteonecrosis jaw

Common Questions and Answers about Alendronate osteonecrosis jaw

boniva

Avatar n tn SHE HAD DIFFICULTY FINDING A LAB THAT WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE TEST AND ONE THAT PERFORMED THE TEST. THE RESULTS OF THE TEST INDICATED THAT HER JAW BONE WAS NOT SUFFICIENTLY STRONG[?] ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND THE WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE PERFORMED, SO HER DENTISTS HAD TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO DO HER DENTAL WORK. THE DENTIST EXPLAINED THAT THE CONDITION OF HER JAW WAS THE EFFECT OF PROLONGED USE OF FOSAMAX. SHE COULD NOT THOROUGHLY EXPLAIN WHAT WAS GOING ON.
Avatar m tn If she has ever taken Boniva, she should worry. Google Osteonecrosis of the jaw, many drugs like Fosomax have bad side effects. A friend lost several teeth and parts of her jaw due to this. She eventually had to have cadaver bone to replace the bone she lost, then implants. She should take other types of calcium supplements.
Avatar m tn The authors examined the effects of high-dose oral alendronate (40 mg daily) for 6 months on 3 adult patients with intractable headache due to fibrous dysplasia of the skull. Each patient had disease processes not amenable to surgery. The patients underwent clinical follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months. Their pain levels were documented at each visit by using a visual analog scale. All 3 patients demonstrated a significant decrease in pain levels and became independent of scheduled analgesics.
Avatar f tn There definitely is a connection between bisphosphonates like Fosamax and osteonecrosis of the jaws. This has been well established and documented in medical and dental journals. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the type of doctor that most commonly diagnoses and treats this condition.
Avatar n tn The biophosphonate drugs have been known to cause osteonecrosis (infection causing loss of bone) of the jaw. A disease you do not want to get. The lecturer said she would never recommend anyone taking them. Having an extraction or even a root canal after taking these drugs can initiate the infection in the bone.
Avatar f tn I took my first dose of Alendronate and then experience significant muscle pain for the next 4 days. Does anyone know if I should expect this to happen each time I take it or is it something to happen for the first few times until my body adjusts to the medicine?
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar n tn It sounds like your surgeon is describing osteonecrosis. There is an entity known as "spontaneous onsteonecrosis of the knee." or "SPONK" This occurs rarely after knee after knee arthroscopy and can resolve after a period of rest and non-weight bearing. I t is not usually a reult of swelling. If anything, two weeks may be to soon to expect any change, either positive or negative, and often 6 weeks is used before re-evaluation.
Avatar n tn David Berg of Hemex Laboratories has been studying the hypercoagulation often found in patients with chronic disease. This list currently includes CFS/FMS, myofascial pain syndrome, osteonecrosis of the jaw, fetal loss, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, Sjogren's syndrome, IBS, Lyme disease, autism, gulf war illness and ADD.” Refer: http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C546624.
553692 tn?1215277731 Does anyone know how serious this is and if the pain is mostly relieved by surgery. In my searching the internet bone infarct is the same as osteonecrosis. Im very concerned, anyone know anything please help??
Avatar f tn I think I have avascular necrosis of the jaw. More or less, the jaw is deteriorating. The dental hygienist said she wished she had my bone level in my jaw. Yeah right, what does she know. The xray did not show what the oral surgeon could see when he yanked the wisdom teeth. Have you been or oral biophosphonates? You know, like Boniva? Or corticosteroids? This is a stretch but have you heard of amyloidosis? I am being biopsied on Friday for Amyloid and Sjogrens Syndrome by an ENT at HUP.
Avatar f tn I am also taking Aromasin for bc. Stopped alendronate (I am osteopenic due to 30 yrs of prednisolone and Arimidex) in case this caused the oesophagitis. Would appreciate your advice.
Avatar f tn thankyou,i am with contact of my doctor ,he said there is no solution for damaged vertibras, but calcium and vitiman d and alendronate sodium/cholecaiciferol tablets will help spine and bones from further damages but what to do with prednisones i cant stop them because of asthma and taking of them will damage other bones isnt there any other solution instead of prednisones, i know there is nothing accept these because my doctor told me:(

Avatar f tn Osteoporosis medications like Raloxifene (Evista), alendronate (Fosomax), risendronate (Actonel) and ibandronate (Boniva) all can cause flu like symptoms in individuals that are taking them. I am not sure what medications you are on, but this could be your problem.
Avatar n tn Ischemic osteonecrosis means, literally, "dead bone from poor blood flow." The most important underlying, and almost always undiagnosed, susceptibility comes from coagulation disorders. (Source: http://www.maxillofacialcenter.com/NICOcause.html ) Sometimes a person inherits the coagulation problem. Hypercoagulation can also be associated with tick borne infection. http://www.drcharlescrist.com/hypercoagulation.
Avatar m tn No this is not from TMJ, I had osteonecrosis in my jawbone, had 3 surgeries and haven't had any pain since I was on the methadone but now that I am down to 18mgs the pain is starting to come through, my sister tells me it is rebound pain???
Avatar n tn I think sometimes the radiologist can tell, like in my case, he highly suggested I had osteonecrosis of the femur rather than osteochronditis dissiccans, and which the radiologist thought after reading the bone scan because it was a hot lesion. It also said there was a large Baker's cyst.
199980 tn?1233797404 I had groin pain for a long time and then I was diagnosed with osteonecrosis where the bone dies. I also had this same condition in my shoulder. Both of these areas were injured when I was young but mixed with the amount of steroids that I have taken over the last 10 years the osteonecrosis developed. The symptoms started with range of motion issues and then progressed to unbearable pain. I have to say that I was humbled by the pain. I would scream out in pain when I tried to get up.
Avatar f tn Avasculary necrosis occurs when the blood supply to the bone is cut off for reasons of trauma or disease. This causes the bone in the area without blood supply to die and then to break down, often crumbling and failing to bear weight properly. Knee replacement can be done usually, depending on the location and size of the necrotic bone (I have a large lesion in a location that at present makes replacement impossible). It is also called osteonecrosis.
Avatar m tn My bigger concern is now with this medication causing tons of bone density loss, as much has been happening with my jaw, cheeks, TMJ joint and neck this past year and a half.. all of which need surgery. I've already started with a tooth removal, but I'm concerned the surgeries I need will not work if bone density loss is there, especially if it requires bones to grow and fuse in the surgery. Anyway, figured I'd ask some advice here in case someone has any. Hope everyone is well!
Avatar f tn Nonunion or failure of the fracture to heal occurs in 10-30% of fractures of the neck of the femur (thigh bone) which is usually apparent within one year of the fracture and may be accompanied by osteonecrosis (bone death), irrespective of the cause of fracture. Majority of patients with non-union will require a re-operation.
