Abscess on appendix

Common Questions and Answers about Abscess on appendix

abscess

Avatar f tn On September 29th I went to the ER to discover my appendix had ruptured. Apparently about 1 week passed before I realized it ( no pain, just flu symptoms that were persistant) A huge abscess had grown where my ruptured appendix was and so this prevented my surgeon from taking out the appendix. He could only drain the abscess. I was in the hospital for 9 days and was told after an abdominal scan I was clear of abscesses. I was sent home but under home care since my wound was still open.
Avatar m tn I was given antibiotics for 12 hours and then had my appendix removed on the 19th. As my appendix was being removed the surgeon realized that my appendix had actually ruptured. I was in the hospital for 14 days, taking more IV antibiotics, having an abscess drain and trying to control the diarrhea, vomiting, night sweats, and severe pain I was having. I was later discharged but due to complications was readmitted 3 days later.
1274514 tn?1277061523 There must be collection (of pus/ blood or seroma) in the stich line, which is a common problem in infected surgery like ruptured appendix. If it is left behind it wil never heal and will keep on progressing inside till it becomes a realy big abscess, so it is advisable to drain it outside. Infact it should be left open after surgery in very infected wounds and closed later on after few days when all signs of infection has subsided.
Avatar n tn My husband just had a diagnosis of a ruptured appendix on Thursday. The surgeon here says he won't need surgery because there is little to no appendix left. The doctor also says that there may or may not be an abscess so my husband has another CT scan today. That was hours ago and my husbands condition is getting worse. I have told the nurse this twice now and the only comments I get is that she is new to my husband and she does not know where the doctor is.
Avatar m tn It's hard to understand exactly what went on; on the other hand, I'd agree that if it wasn't found after three hours it seems unlikely that further looking would help. Here's the good news: it's not likely to "poison" her simply by being there. There's dead tissue inside after nearly any operation (we tie things off, and what's beyond the tie dies away, for example.
Avatar n tn In July 2001 I had emergency surgery for a burst appendix, but once 'in'the surgeon also found an abscess the size of a grapefruit and that my colon had ruptured. 5 hour surgery, one week hospital stay and a scar a good 12 inches long. My question - a) should I still be having stomach aches, my surgeon's english was not good enough for him to really explain my condition and my doctor just keeps giving me more painkillers and b) anyone know how on earth I can make this hideous scar less obvious.
Avatar f tn I had an appendectomy on October 14th for a perforated appendix with peritonitis. I was in the hospital for nine days while the wound was draining. Now it has been about 5 weeks, and I still feel soreness in the appendix site when I press on it or digest food. Last week I walked a lot and did some pushups and squats, and the following day I felt a twinge at the appendix site whenever I moved. My intestines are still a little inflamed and feel irritated during bowel movements.

I havent noticed anything relating to my diet.
Avatar f tn My husband was just diagnosed with a ruptured appendix. The doctor says that he does not need surgery because there is not much of the appendix left. In the ER they told us that he had an abscess but now the surgeon is not so sure. My husband continues to be blotted, a low fever of 99.6 up to 103, and the pain has now returned to his abdomen. He was diagnosed Thursday this is now Monday, I told the nurse that he looks worse but she only comments that this is her first day with him.
Avatar n tn I'm 41yrs old, in reasonable fitness and health but have been diagnosed with a ruptured appendix and have had a drain/antibiotic therapy to clear up the infection and abscess. The appendix will be taken out in 4 weeks' time. What range of physical activity should I carry out in the interval? Would there be a risk of causing damage by lifting, bending, moderate gym exercise etc ? Thanks..

Avatar f tn Sorry I couldn't find a forum for Appendicitis anywhere on this website which I found bizarre. My husband had an emergency appendectomy on 26th Jan. It was laporoscopic surgery and they also found an abcess that was infected so he had a drain attached to him in hospital for 4 days to drain all the toxins out. They sent him home 30th Jan for a weeks rest and antibiotics to take. I had to take him back to emergency 8th feb as he had high fevers and pain in the same area.
Avatar f tn I'm surprised they didn't take at least your appendix; it's not like you needed it. Surely they did pathology on your appendix (what was left of it) and you know that it wasn't malignant. So I'm guessing that the doctor will tell you it was an unfortunate coincidence. If you're having digestive issues, perhaps it's time for a colonoscopy? (The bowel prep is far worse than the procedure itself, by the way.) Good luck, God bless, and please let us know what the doc says/does.
Avatar f tn My daughter had her appendix out. They tried lap surgery and ended up performing the open surgery. She was in the hospital for 4 days throwing up and unable to eat the whole time but they released her. She was home less than 2 days when she stopped by my house and I noticed how red her surgical site was as well as swollen. I took her straight back to the er. They opened it partially and placed the packing in.
Avatar m tn I was then transferred to a hospital. It didn't take long for the doctors to figure out my appendix burst and an abscess had formed. Initially the plan was to drain the abscess but the Dr. said there was no "window" and then lectured me on the benefits of a less evasive process by simply taking antibiotics. I was in the hospital for 10 days on the 3 different types of antibiotics, Flagel, Cipro and another that escapes my mind currently.

But The pain didn't go away, only got better until today that hurts like hell!! The feeling of the pain is the same as the one I get when I have air in my bowels, when I have catch a cold.

Avatar m tn They did a CT and found gall stones, big ones, but they also found a mass on my bigger than a marble. They did a ultra sound to see if it was a cyst. Came back negative. So they take out my gall bladder but I still get sick to my stomach but now it hurts on both sides and my left lower back. So they ordered another CT to check my spleen and it hasn't grown. They said they will do another in 6 months. I also had a upper GI done and that came back OK.
Avatar n tn i have a constant slightly minor pain on my left side about 5 inches below my ribs, deep breathing makes it hurt, started after i ate and have had this for a full 24hrs any ideas should i be worried
468836 tn?1215479716 Your problem with blood clotting might fit into this, too. It's also possible the pain in your abdomen, and with cysts on your ovaries and an appendix that was goofed up, might be an indication of an abscess, which they can look for infection in the bloodwork, too. If you don't have a family doctor, you can go to a clinic and they can do labs for you. It was blood work that revealed I had a problem with my thyroid, which it had put me out of work for months until they straightened it out.
Avatar n tn Wow your symptoms sound exactly like mine, i had to do a double take to make sure that it wasnt my post. I have a lump on the bottom rib on the left side under my breast. I had it checked out at docs and it feels like bone matter and doesnt move at all it is firmly stuck. I only noticed it since i had my first child. It seems like it could be scar tissue from when i cracked the rib years ago when i had a really bad cough (believe it or not!!).
Avatar n tn If the appendix ruptures and walls off into an abscess, it may not require emergency surgery; if the abscess is small enough, antibiotics alone may do the trick. If it's larger, then it may need draining. Under these circumstances, it may be elected to put off the actual removal of the appendix until the infection subsides; that way, you don't risk spreading the infection around within the abdomen. After it subsides, the appendix is later removed, to prevent the whole thing from happening again.
Avatar m tn If a CT scan shows that you have an abscess from a ruptured appendix, you may be treated for infection. You will have your appendix removed after the infection and swelling have gone away. Expectations (prognosis) If your appendix is removed before it ruptures, you will likely get well very soon after surgery. If your appendix ruptures before surgery, you will probably recover more slowly, and are more likely to develop an abscess or other complications.
Avatar n tn i was hospitalized for a week with lower right quadrant pain and had contrast ct of abdomen; upper gi follow through; and saw a urologist for my interstitial cystitis prior to admission all to no avail. still in pain as though i have an ovarian cyst or something is tugging on my "insides" and the pain is worse when up walking with sharp stabbing pains. now going to have thoraric/lumbar mri tomorrow. any suggestions .................
Avatar f tn She did ultrasound, suspected to be appendix. The US showed appendix visible, nabothian cyst in utetus , mild pelvic fluid, equivocal finding for appendix. My GP ordered CT to confirm appendix. She told mild pelvic fluid could be due to appendicitis. I did my CT yesterday, a week after US. The report says normal appendix, moderately high pelvic fluid, adnexal cystic structure, ovaries not discretely visible due to fluid surrounding. When I googled, it all gives me sweats on possible cancer.
Avatar n tn 116 Let me preface this with the fact that 3 weeks prior to my being blood drawn I was hospitalized 5 days with an appendix abscess which I had drained and was subsequently put on 2 antibiotics for a few weeks.
Avatar f tn If by chance you were actually able to figure out that your pain was from an inflammed appendix your delay in seeking medical attention would have resulted in the appendix becoming gangrenous and perforating usully after about 4 hours of symptoms. I agee that, in the absence of other signs / symptoms of an inflammatory process simple constipation would be the most likely diagnosis.
Avatar f tn He sent my scan to a surgeon who agreed with him and said he would have taken my appendix out the day I was in the hospital had he been the one on call. I scheduled the surgery and had my appendix removed. When I woke from surgery, I was still experiencing the same pain and was told that my appendix looked fine so they no longer thought this was the problem. Since then, the pain hasn't gotten any better and it seems to be more intense after I eat anything.
1129974 tn?1260096606 The original Dr did think it was a kidney infection but they dismissed this on the next appointment and leaned towards a low grade appendix infection but they've gone back on this to! I think they are confused as the pain isn't where it should be. I will update once I know more!
Avatar n tn Has his appendix been checked? Sometimes pain on the right side of the abdomen is associated with the appendix. I wish you the best of luck for your dad!
