Common Questions and Answers about Abscess cat wound

abscess

Avatar m tn First some back story: Cat had an abscess, took it to the vet. The abscess drained, went back to the vet, gave us some antibiotics. After abscess drained, the cat irritated it a bit, a flap of skin came off revealing tissue, and bone on the right of the jaw/mouth. We went back to the vet, said she couldn't bandage it since it's literally on the mouth, and therefore couldn't eat. Also can't stitch since there's no skin to stitch together.
Avatar f tn My two year old cat came home last night and this morning I notice an abscess on the bottom of his mouth. It is the size of a large marble but there are no visible signs of a wound, scratch, cut, ect. I asked some friends about this and they said it was a spider bite, I am watching him close to make sure he is eating still.
Avatar f tn My cat had an abscess on his back - which I have enough experience with to treat myself. I have owned cats for 30 years. I have been able to clear and heal the wound and have been dosing him with amoxicillin. He seems to have an allergy to this antibiotic as I have discovered hes been throwing up in the basement. This is the usual drug I use to treat abscess-type infections and I want to make sure the interior infection clears up.
592047 tn?1243385987 We rushed her straight to the vet who diagnosed an abscess from a cat fight our girl must have got herself into. And he also discovered she is pregnant, and is about 3 weeks along by the feel of things. The vet said he hopes her kittens aren't affected by this abscess / infection. Her temp was 40 degrees celcius also (which I was told is only slightly high for cats).
Avatar n tn my cat starting limping around about 2 days. he wont let look at his paw to see if something is stuck in it or cut. he also just lays around, doesnt move around much at all. hes not eating very well either. should i take him to the vet, or is he just laying around because his paw hurts?
Avatar f tn She favored it for a few days, and the wound does not appear infected. We are able to touch her leg near the wound, and she doesn't put up too much fuss, and she hasn't changed her habits, in terms of eating or playing. Just today she started to favor it again, but the wound still looks clean. Should I take her to the vet, or just let time heal it?
Avatar n tn Cats have skin that heals fast over wounds, and if the wound has bacteria in it, the wound will fester and abscess, as you have seen. Your cat that healed naturally is lucky, this kind of abscess can kill the cat. The trick is to keep the wound clean and keep it open, so it can drain. I would agree that it is from fighting, and it does sound likely to be from fighting with another cat. (It could be a strange cat trying to enter your cats' territory.
Avatar f tn Just noticed yesterday that my cat has a puncture wound near his anus. He has been licking it incessantly and there is a raw area around it. He does not seem to be in pain (I can touch the area with no big reaction) and seems fine otherwise. Will this just heal? Is there something I can do at home? He has a very traumatic history with vets and I would like to avoid taking him in if at all possible.
Avatar m tn I believe the cyst has been opened as their appears to be a small opening where there is some blood colored ooze within. I cleaned the wound but when attempting to bandage it with gauze and bandage tape, my cat retracted her arm and moaned whenever I would attempt to apply the bandage, as if any pressure on the wound hurt her. I would also like to note that before I noticed this wound, my cat appeared to have a sprain injury accompanied by some swelling on the same foreleg only 1 week ago.
Avatar n tn Our one year old cat has had 39.8 fever and slight limping on his back leg since a week. We`ve been to the vet twice with him. First visit he got a shot of anti-inflammatory and antibiotics. The vet said he could not find any physical marks like bite wounds or anything. He was good until the anti inflammatory wore off, then back on the couch sleeping with 39.9 fever.
Avatar m tn I actually had a chance to take a good look at the wound last night while Misty the cat was eating and it looks like it is crusting up which I think is a good sign because the vet we previously took her to said when a wound is in the process of healing it starts to crust up sometimes and the dead skin falls off, I don't know if that makes sense or not.
Avatar f tn My male cat, who is about a year and three months, recently had an abscess that we got drained by a vet. He is normally an outdoor cat, but we have had to keep him inside until his wound ( from draining the abscess) is healed. So I noticed his poop is extremely fowl smelling. I've never been a victim to his droppings, as he has always pooped in someone else's yard, but now that he is pooping in his litter box inside I see that his poop appears to have, what I think is, mold on it.
Avatar m tn He appeared to be in some kind of shock for the first 24 hours or so. He has 1 small puncture wound on front shoulder and many scrapes. The cat has been resting for about 48 hours now. I cleaned all wounds and the many tons of scrapes with peroxide, betadine and neosporin. I am giving him 50mg of Penicillin twice a day. He accepts very little food and water with assistance. His 3rd eyelids are not up and his eyes look clear.
2216535 tn?1339408893 hey i just got my cat fixed 2 days ago and her tummy is a little swallen how do i get it to go down im worried that its goin to affect the healing
Avatar n tn MY CAT WAS OUT ALL NIGHT LAST NIGHT AND CAME HOME THIS MORNING. HE WAS FINE ALL DAY UNTIL MY DAD SAID HE HAD A CUT UNDER HIS CHIN OR SOMETHING. I LIFTED UP HIS CHIN AND THERE IS A CIRCULAR CUT..A WOUND AND THERE IS A THING INSIDE OF IT. IT'S A WHITE THING BUT IT'S NOT A BONE. I DON'T THINK IT'S PUS BECAUSE IT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF BEING HARD AND SOFT. IT'S LIKE A YELLOW WHITE AND IT SMELLS REALLY BAD. THIS CUT/WOUND IS SURROUNDED BUT A PATCH OF MISSING FUR.
Avatar n tn s no reason to specifically believe that it was caused by fighting with another cat, that I know of, unless the vet recognized a cat scratch at the site. Is there any sign of anything like that? Does the lump feel hard or soft? Can you move it around at all (if you see what I mean) or does it stay put? If it is an infection, she should have antibiotics prescribed and most likely, an antibiotic injection. It could also be a bug bite, I suppose, in which case she might require antihistamines.
517872 tn?1623105664 So, I just went out in the afternoon today to seek the advise of a vet who after listening to the conditions of the cat suggested that there could also be maggots and I would have to flush or spray the wound with Turpentine oil, especially If I saw any maggots eating the wound. And He also gave me an aerosol for topical applications that is meant mostly for cows or sheep, as It was specifically mentioned on it, that Do not use for cats. Such a shame.
Avatar f tn Sorry for another question. Is the perianal abscess or the opening of an anal fistula considered as an open sore/wound? Many thanks in advance.
10441189 tn?1410152122 Make an urgent appointment to see your doctor immediately. The only way to find out which bacteria is causing this "abscess" is to have a culture test. You have an abscess and require an urgent course of antibiotics. It is good that the puss is draining away, but you still may need help with the drainage and for the "plug" to be removed.
Avatar f tn my cat has an abscess from a cat bite. he weighs 20.

Avatar f tn The body naturally heals itself up but because there is still foreign bacteria inside the wound white blood cells are sent to fight it which creates a build up of puss inside the wound. It builds up until it eventually pops, in this case it has already popped. A small abscess can potentially be treated at home by just cleaning it out regularly so when it heals over again the bacteria inside is gone allowing the body to heal correctly.
Avatar n tn Hi, a slight limp is usually no big deal for a cat. It might indicate a strained tendon. If it were a broken bone, she would not walk on the leg at all. When you are looking at her foot, also look at her leg for any possible bites, and also feel her shoulder. So far, it doesn't sound bad. But if you happen to find a bite, get her in to see the vet as soon as possible.
Avatar m tn Hello doctor...thank you so much for your reply. I noticed the lump after my abscess resolved without I&D.....could fibrous tissue walling off the abscess produce a lump like this? Its rather small and I have to poke at it to feel it properly.....I guess Im a hypochondriac and assume the worst. Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
1080889 tn?1260948265 It formed for four days before I was able to see a doctor. After having the pus drained, I had to pack my wound with gauze so that the wound heals from the inside out. This is supposed to prevent any future collections of pus to appear in the infected area. However, I experience a lot of pain during packing. Having to stuff your open wound with eight inches of gauze every morning is most times unbearable.
