Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosing hsv

valtrex

Avatar m tn I have read that if a couple where the male has HSV-2 and the female is both HSV-1 and HSV-2 negative does nothing more than avoid sexual contact during outbreaks, the female has an 8% chance of contracting HSV-2 genitally in any given year. However, if the male takes 500 mg of Valtrex daily, that percentage is reduced to about 4%.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with HSV 2 over a year and half ago with my last pregnancy. I take Valyrex 500mg 1 qd for prophylactic treatment and to avoid transmission to my partner..... I am now in the first trimester of our 2nd child and think.I am having my first outbreak. Classic sx, itching, blistering, body aches and headache... but I've heard outbreaks are painful and I have no pain.... I also have a subchorionic hemorrhage and wonder.
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar m tn I am HSV-2 positive and my girlfriend stopped using condoms last week. Our relationship is still relatively new (about 8 months), so we're still having sex at least 2 or 3 times per day. I am taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily, and I know that's supposed to reduce risk of transmission by about 48% down to 4-5% per year. And this is supposedly more protection than a condom offers (around 40% reduced risk, I believe).
Avatar f tn s 2x/day dosing for suppressive therapy. I really recommend stopping the valtrex for a month now, letting your body get a break and then trying one of the other antivirals.
Avatar f tn t recommended much I believe its more eposidic then anything. We know how HSV-2 and valtrex work which is where most of the studies are. Let's put it in a little perspective. A regular here (Petal) has HSV-1 genital. Her partner has HSV-1 oral. He transmitted it to her after 5 years of what she says a pretty active oral sex life. It happens and it may happen to you. HSV-1 gentially of either HSV type to have in the genital location is the one you would want to get.
Avatar f tn I am trying to figure out how to minimize outbreaks (I seem to get one after every infusion) I am currently on generic valtrex which I had only been taking for outbreaks. I looked up the standard dosing for prevention of outbreaks but that doesnt seem to keep them at bay either. I cant stop getting th remicade so are there any suggestions as to what I can do?
Avatar f tn I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
Avatar m tn My problem is I am having monthly to twice monthly breakouts of hsv sores on the margin of my lip. I have taken 1000mg Valtrex daily for a few months now and I am still getting very frequent outbreaks. This is becoming mentally and physically taxing. Anxiety levels never get a chance to subside which creates a viscous cycle I am sure. Do you have any thoughts for me? Do I bump up to 2000mg Valtrex daily to get this under control? IS this normal? Is there any hope of this subsiding with time?
Avatar m tn What would you recommend I do as far as dosing the Valtrex? Do you think this is still the inital outbreak manifesting itself? Is there anything you can suggest as far as relief from the neuropathic pain? I have found NSAIDs and narcotics to be largely ineffective. Thank you!
Avatar m tn I went by your advice and had a herpes test done exactly 4 months after the encounter on 7/12 and the results were HSV I above 5 (which I had for 10 years) and HSV II 0.26. On the day of the test, I had just got done taking the Valacyclovir for 5 days(that I got online and took on my second, third and fourth outbreak symtoms in April May and July). I had not stopped taking the l-lysine for the whole period as a precaution and to reduce symptoms/outbreaks although its not proven.
Avatar f tn So now that i found out that i have hsv-1 do i need to take valtrex everyday for the rest of my life if i dont want to get my partner infected?
Avatar f tn Hello, i had a hsv 1 genital outbreak about a month ago, i have had this for six years and only one outbreak since the first time, my question is, do i really need to stay on the valtrex for surpresive therapy, or would it be smarter to stay on it to avoid giving it to someone else
Avatar m tn Is once or twice a day more or less effective, morning or night dosing or both. Are there long term health problems related to suppressive therapy? I have read extensive information on Immunovex and Acambis working on Vaccines of a preventative and therapeutic modality. They are utilizing different and emerging technologies than past attempts.
Avatar n tn t think the rash is going to be gone in 2 days so I am not sure if I would additional dosing of the Valtrex or if the 1 week was enough to alter the course. I am not sure what the protocol would be in that situation. The rash definitly hurts. It hurts to move, sleep, even the air from the fan causes pain. The skin next to the rash is sensitive to the touch and I actually have an on and off pain running down my leg. Not sure if this is normal, but hopefully it will pass.
Avatar f tn How good does valtrex work in suppressing HSV 1 I started taking 1000 mg a day?
Avatar f tn Two years ago, I got tested for HSV 1 and HSV 2. The IGG results were: HSV 1 = >5, and HSV 2 = 1.34. My doctor immediately put me on Valtrex, and for the passed 2 years, have been taking it. Three weeks ago, I was again tested for HSV 1 and HSV 2. The IGG results were: HSV 1 = 3.82 and HSV 2 = < .91. My questions: 1) Is it DEFINITE that I don't have HSV2? 2) Did the HSV 2 number get lower because I've been taking Valtrex? 3) My new doctor said to stop taking Valtrex.
1628163 tn?1299535389 She put me on valtrex it seems like the valtrex shortened the outbreaks but i have tingling every day and i dont know why. and I still have outbreaks, so why is this?
Avatar m tn I need a valtrex prescription and the family doctor gave me some without prescription, the doctor asked to do a blood test for hsv type 1 (had around 6 cold sores at the time, valtrex worked wonders). At the time, I coudnt test for hsv because of taking valtrex but now i need a daily dose but i'm taking 1000mg lysine everyday. Will lysine affect the blood test result of hsv type 1? Do i need to stop taking it to test positive?
Avatar m tn HSV-1 is less susceptible to Valtrex and related drugs, so the necessary dose is unknown and might be higher than for HSV-2. Also, asymptomatic shedding is less common with oral HSV-1 than genital HSV-2. Finally, the main strategy for protecting your partner probably should be for him or her to be tested for HSV-1. There is a 50-50 chance of a positive result, in which case s/he is not susceptible and you need take no precautions at all. To the specific questions: 1,3) Answered above.
Avatar f tn s really comforting to know that the valtrex dosing would be much less should I need it. And I really appreciate the advice to not worry too much about the possibility of frequent recurrences. Sometimes it's hard to know how to temper my reaction to this whole situation - it ranges from no big deal to deal breaker in ten thoughts or less. The perspective is a huge help. I'll call in to set up the Western blot this week.
Avatar n tn Grace, I was diagnosed w/ GH-HSV-2 by type specific IgG test in May of this year. I have not had any outbreaks at all, I occasionally have burning and itching, but beyond that nothing else. I have been on supressive therapy w/ Valtrex since the end of may. I have had pain on lower right abdomen, under my ribcage it feels, and pain on my right lower back. Is this a symptom of Herpes, or can this be a reaction to the Valtrex?
Avatar n tn Should I continue to take 1 mg of Valtrex? My understanding is that based on my Genitial HSV-1 diagnosis, I should never have another outbreak (or at least very few) and that I am at an extremely low risk of spreading the virus through shedding. Valtrex is outrageously expensive costing me and my HMO about $375 per month. Also, I am worried about the side effects of the drug. Lately I have started to feel rather depressed, something very new to me.
Avatar m tn Finally, in your experience does any of the antivirals work better than the others and are the dosages the same for genital HSV as for oral (I ask because the dosage my PCP prescribed was based the dosage for genital HSV?) Thank yoy again.
