Today I did a blood test for hsv 1 and hsv2 before a doctor diagnosed the blısters as herpes but doctor examined me has given me zostex until the results come out.
zostex is used for herpes zoster and as far as I know not related with genital herpes, he said it was also an untiviral for hsv ? is that true? should I use it till the results come out?
I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.

I was diagnosed and treated with Valtrex for genital HSV 2 about 3 weeks ago and all of my lesions have since dried up and disappeared for the most part. Ever since I have been diagnosed with HSV 2 I have only been sleeping about 2-3 hours per night for 3 weeks which has been awful. Both of my eyes have turned slightly red, slightly irritated at times, and were watery about 3-4 times during the last two weeks mostly at night before bed, but there are no tears pouring down my face.
I was exposed to HSV I. I developed an itchy vaginal rash that yielded noting for my doctor to swab. I had at least 15 years, prior, of low grade chronic vaginal itching. The igG specific tests were negative but the igM was positive. I took 5 days of Valtrex and then I took it one more time for five days when I had itching which could have been a yeast infection or HSV. Then I took no more Valtrex until the 8th month after the first test.
I am now dating a man who just received negative IGG results for HSV II, but positive results for HSV I. Unfortunately, we didn't know his status until after we engaged in unprotected oral sex (three or four times). I asked him about symptoms after he got his results, and he said he has a history of occasional cold sores. Fortunately, he did not have any noticeable outbreaks when we engaged in oral sex. However, he is not taking Valtrex.
There are 3 antivirals (oral medication) generally prescribed for treating HSV. These are Valtrex/valacyclovir, Famvir/famciclovir, and acyclovir. They require a doctor's prescription.
There are also several topicals that you can get over the counter. Some of these are Abreva, Releev, and Dermoplast.
In addition some people use natural remedies such as honey, which has been found to have antiviral properties.
I was negative for both types of hsv but again thought the valtrex was the issue so I stopped the valtrex and two months later redid the igg test which again was negative. Now at 11 months post infection I had the university of Washington western blot done and this too was negative. Now I’m a doctor and damn those lesions looked like herpes and I had the appropriate tingling and symptoms. I am assuming I don’t have herpes but then what did I have?
I also ordered a prescription of Valtrex through the original company that I went through to order the STDs testing. I have an appointment on August 11th with my gyn. Should I hold off on taking this medicine? I'm not showing any signs nor have I in the past, well at least I don't think so. I didn't know if this medication would skew the results should my gyn decide to have me retested.
Two years ago, I got tested for HSV 1 and HSV 2. The IGG results were: HSV 1 = >5, and HSV 2 = 1.34. My doctor immediately put me on Valtrex, and for the passed 2 years, have been taking it.
Three weeks ago, I was again tested for HSV 1 and HSV 2. The IGG results were: HSV 1 = 3.82 and HSV 2 = < .91.
My questions:
1) Is it DEFINITE that I don't have HSV2?
2) Did the HSV 2 number get lower because I've been taking Valtrex?
3) My new doctor said to stop taking Valtrex.
I had HSV-1. He gave me a prescription for Valtrex twice daily. I did not miss a day. The pain continued, and included nerve pain radiating down the backs of my legs. For the last three years I have felt as though I am getting a chemical peel in my vagina. Every single day for three years my vagina has burned all day long. I spend 16 hours a day feeling on fire.
My first doctor seemed to think I was exaggerating and needed a psychiatrist.

I need a valtrex prescription and the family doctor gave me some without prescription, the doctor asked to do a blood test for hsv type 1 (had around 6 cold sores at the time, valtrex worked wonders). At the time, I coudnt test for hsv because of taking valtrex but now i need a daily dose but i'm taking 1000mg lysine everyday. Will lysine affect the blood test result of hsv type 1? Do i need to stop taking it to test positive?
I recommend you say off Valtrex for several weeks, and the next time you get apparent gum inflammation, see your primary care provider (or your dentis) for HSV testing from the inflamed gums. If postive for HSV-1, you will have proved me wrong -- but I would be very surprised.
In general, suppressive therapy is not commonly used for HSV-1. The main reason is to prevent symtomatic outbreaks, when those outbreaks are particularly severe or frequent.
