Valtrex for hsv 2

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex for hsv 2

valtrex

Avatar m tn I have read that if a couple where the male has HSV-2 and the female is both HSV-1 and HSV-2 negative does nothing more than avoid sexual contact during outbreaks, the female has an 8% chance of contracting HSV-2 genitally in any given year. However, if the male takes 500 mg of Valtrex daily, that percentage is reduced to about 4%.
Avatar m tn I went to labcorp to get fully tested for STDs. Everything came back negative except herpes 2. My results were HSV 1 <0.09 and HSV 2 1.23. The Lapcorp used the Simplex 2 Igg Herpes Select Test. I have read that this could be a false negative but more likely if the HSV 1 came up positive. I have made an appointment with my GYN. Am I silly to have hope that this may be a false negative?
Avatar n tn I was tested for everything else and came back negative. (The IgG results negative for both hsv-1 and hsv-2 at 3 weeks post exposure). On 12/16, my primary care physician diagnosed me with hsv-2 based on visual inspection. She prescribed Valtrex. The ulcers cleared in about a week. I had night sweats on 12/16. Test results from 12/16 visit - HSV- 2 IgG positive at 1.4 and HSV-1 negative 0.3. I went to a specialist who tested me again at and the results came back as HSV-2 IgG 1.
127596 tn?1210922622 No HSV-1 does not change to HSV-2 just because you did oral sex or get it on your genitals. They are 2 separate viruses. Each virus type can be transmitted to either site. Though HSV-2 orally is less common (rare) and HSV-1 is a little more common to find between both sites. If you are worried this much about it I would consider a new friend. But honestly you are getting worried over nothing. Just because she has cold sores doesn't mean she is a walking biohazard or a bad person.
Avatar n tn I cannot imagine what having oral HSV-1 on top of my genital HSV-2 would be like given that my HSV-2 symptoms are so severe, constant and uncontrollable (see below). If the answer is yes, PLEASE direct me to studies so that I may further educate myself. 2) What is the next step if any for drug-resistant HSV-2? My neuralgia is terrible and occurs 24/7 and is NOT responsive to Valtrex (which I can't take anyway, as it causes explosive digestive problems). Thanks for any help.
Avatar m tn org/posts/STDs/IGG-Test-Result-Confusion/show/593272 As for the exposure you describe, it was not merely low risk for HSV-2; it was zero risk for practial purposes. HSV-2 is not spread by kissing or by hand-genital contact, and rarely by oral sex. You should not have been tested for HSV-2 on account of that exposure, and I'm afraid you're now suffering the common consequence that the blood tests often give false or misleading results.
Avatar n tn My bf is positive for both HSV 1 and 2. He had a 4-something for HSV 1 and 1.8 for HSV 2. Did I give this to him? My number is higher. Or is it impossible to tell?
Avatar m tn With the most commonly used commercial tests for HSV-2 antibody, the HerpeSelect test (Focus Technologies) and the Captia HSV-2 test (Trinity Biotech), most newly infected people have positive tests by 6 weeks, but in 20-30% of cases it takes 3 months or longer. I hope this helps.
Avatar n tn I was given Valtrex for HSV-1 and the doctor said that by my taking it, I am prevented from catching type 2. Does this sound true?
Avatar m tn The test is more sensitive for HSV-2 then HSV-1 so that is a plus. It will not prevent HSV-2 from being trasnmitted though either.
Avatar f tn I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
Avatar f tn Thank you for any advice. I have been taking 2 1G Valtrex for 2 days and symptoms do not seem to be improving. I am going to start back on the usual dose of 1G.
1713150 tn?1314467342 I am taking Valtrex everyday for supressive therapy. But when I do get another outbreak, do I need to be put on antibiotics? Because I have MS the last out break had me in relapse mode in a major way. Infections really mess with my disease. Do I need to b put on antibiotics? I will ask my Dr. next time I go. But do you know?
Avatar m tn The results came back neg for hsv 1 and pos for hsv 2 (igG) with a result of 1.42h. Could this be a false positive? I'm looking to retest soon ( which will be 5 months from last test.) should I use the same test or ask for a wester blot? Should I have any hope that I had a false positive? Just FYI I have never have any blisters or out breaks at all so I am very concerned.
Avatar n tn 96. Got the WB done at 5 months post last exposure and came back negative for both HSV 1 and HSV 2. Not to make the issue more confusing for you, but just wanted to present a scenario whereby a high false positive was actually negative. http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn Hello. I am a 43 year old female. HSV 2 positive for 3 years. Since the initial outbreak, which was horrible, I have had only 1 other mild outbreak about a year ago. I took Valtrex at the first feeling something was about to happen, and the pain/sensation ended within a couple days. I do not take Valtrex daily, as I read some others do. I do take lots of vitamins/antioxidants, red algae and Lysine, keep myself healthy and avoid stressful situations as much as possible.
Avatar n tn Anyway I went to ER and they gave me some valtrex. For the next 4 weeks I was a pretty high dose of valtrex (3000 mg for 1 week) then around 2000mg a day for 3 weeks. During this time I had achey feeling in my lower back and nervy pain in the head and around the top of my penis shaft. No visible lesions. After 4 weeks I got tested again and was negative. Which test should I believe? Could my symptoms have been psychosomatic?
Avatar m tn I had non vaginal sex with a woman who later told me that she has HSV 2. She has had it for over 20 years and her last breakout was two years ago..she also told me that she takes Valtrex every day. We only touched each other with our hands......about 16 days later i was feeling an irritation burning chaffing in my left testicle and under my scrotum...no blisters or skin skin issues to speak of ..maybe slightly red but hard to really tell...
Avatar f tn If she uses Valtrex for her HSV 1 infection, your risk of acquiring HSV 2 from her is about 2% per year. You could acquire HSV 2 orally by giving her oral sex, but that is uncommon.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with gHSV 1 two months ago when I had my first episode. Last week I had unprotected sex with a friend. The following night (less than 24 hours later) I developed what appeared to be a small mosquito bite on the shaft of my pennis. I also experienced severe discomfort in my genitals (i.e. itching and tingling). I took Valtrex and the lession and discomfort went away in 5 days.
Avatar m tn I tested positive for oral HSV-2 about 4 months ago. I haven't had any sores or anything to show I've been infected except for swollen tonsils. I've been given the impression that oral to genital transmission is quite likely since HSV-2 prefers to infect the genitals as opposed to the mouth. However, I've also read that viral shedding is quite small for oral HSV-2 since its not in the area it wants to be.
