Common Questions and Answers about Topamax side effects vision

topamax

Avatar f tn I'm back with another question :-). DS is 11.5 yo, recently diagnosed. He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Migraines continue, some tingling in hands and feet, which is likely the topamax. However, today he had a migraine (been on topamax just over three weeks). Once it wore off I took him to school.
1276940 tn?1564515084 t try Topamax before but what I know is numbness and tingling are some of Topamax side effects. It become less with time. Are numbness and tingling really bad? or u can handle it? Do you have any other side effects? How long to use it? Is Topamax useful as mood stabilizer and good for weight loss according to your experience?
Avatar f tn I am on my 2nd week of Topamax. Get ready for some very strange side effects. Your hands and feet and face will tingle and fall asleep. I have no appetite at all. I can go from breakfast to dinner of the next day and not be hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat. I'm forgetting things. I went to Wal Mart and forgot what i went there for. I am on it for migranes so im hoping i can stick it out because my headaches are unbearable. Good luck!
Avatar n tn Hello, Topamax can cause itching and erythematous rash in some individuals.Although the main side effects of topamax are slower reflexes, trouble thinking or concentrating, tiredness, poor coordination, and dizziness, yet it has shown itchy skin in some individuals. I feel that if you are showing any allergic reaction to topamax, pls stop taking it and consult your doctor for a change in prescription. You can take over the counter antihistaminic like benadryl or Claritin for itching.
Avatar f tn I have back problems and the extra weight was brutal. Soon as as switched to Topamax (which has weight loss side effects) I lost the extra weight plus. Seizure meds are tough. They all have very extreme side effects. I've been on 4 different ones and I found that over time my body would get used of the side effects. Depakote was definately one of the better ones for me. Best of luck to you and your son.
Avatar f tn I have been on 100mg of Topamax for almost a month (the 22nd of this month) for cluster headaches and have had a variety of side effects. I take 50mg in the morning and 50mg at night. I thought I was going to lose my mind honestly. But I was told that the side effects would taper off more than likely. Which the vast majority have. I no longer feel dumber than a rock (I wasn't even able to compose an email without reading it very slowly 4-5 times before sending it). And I feel pretty normal.
Avatar f tn You need to contact your doctor and let them know of these side effects. Being diabetic and overweight too, you need to be careful. Please call your doctor and tell them.
Avatar n tn Most of the side effects are dose related. Here is more information about the medication: http://www.drugs.com/topamax.html . Sometimes, dividing the dose into several doses throughout the day may help. Also taking the smallest dose you can take is best to avoid the side effects. Initially, many people have side effects, but after your body gets used to the med. it goes away (usually after a week or 2).

1415174 tn?1453243103 So, be mindful of the side effects if you decide to take the topamax and the higher the dose the more severe the side effects. What happened to me may not happen to you. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I also get headaches if not everyday than every other. So he started me on Topamax for the headaches, it has been miserable with the side effects and I'm not taking anything to help the blurred vision. I feel like I'm not sure what else to do, I dont know if there is anything you can take for blurred vision?? also he said my MS was minor so this time I didnt need shots(at least for now).
Avatar m tn After much research it seems my only options are do nothing or surgery. My Neurologist has had me try topamax in the past but the side effects were horrifying. She now wants me to try Diamox. Any relief with this drug?? I am so afraid of taking any other drugs after the topamax. Side effects or any info would be much appreciated. I will meet with a NS next week to discuss the surgery. I fear the surgery will be too much for my family as I have 2 young children.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Hi, I understand your concern regarding this and like any other medications, side effects may or may not occur depending on the patient as well as if there are drug interactions with patient's present medicine. Topiramate extended-release capsules may cause drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, trouble concentrating, or vision changes. But may be worse if it is taken with alcohol or certain medicines. It is best that you check with your doctor for proper management. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn and i have bad peripheral vision .. my doctor prescribed topamax.. i am wondering how long it would take too notice the affects???
1597714 tn?1299828089 The onset of action of topiramate to reach steady state is about 4 days in persons with normal renal function. CNS side effects may be minimized by initial slow titration or small reductions in other medications with sedative effects. These effects usually diminish over time. The mean plasma elimination half-life is 21 hours and it is excreted in 4-5 days. It may cause eye problems like sudden decrease in vision with or without eye pain and redness, secondary angle closure glaucoma etc.
Avatar f tn I was on Topamax for about 3 years for sever migraines and saw nothing different with my thyroid problems. I researched Topamax and here are all of the possible side effects (doesn't look like your hair loss or thyroid problems can be attributed to Topamax): Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Infrequent: vasodilation. Body as a Whole: Frequent: syncope. Infrequent: abdomen enlarged. Rare: alcohol intolerance.
Avatar f tn I have a lot of co-workers at a call center who have also tried topamax but say its not usefull and hated the side effects so they stopped.
