What feels different between MS swallowing and GERD swallowing?Could I have both? When I was in my thirties I had GERD so bad I had to have my esophagus stretched, and I lost twenty pounds. Now I have swallowing problems and wonder if it is my MS?
Its horrible. The first time it happened was after I had my tonsils out and I gagged on my pain pills to the point that they actually flew out of my nose. LOL I figured it had to do with learning how to swallow again without the use of my tonsils pushing it down. I still have to take a piece of food, chew it up and throw my pill on top of my food to trick myself into swallowing the pill without so much thought,... if I don't I will gag or vomit. It's awful and embarrassing.
I am also going to see a GI doc tomorrow to rule out anything going on with my stomach. A neurologist later on in the week. Thanks in advance for your comments and advice.
I had a partial right hyperthyroid for an large nodule on the right side on June 20th. It turned out to be benign. The initial frozen section and the final path report. I am doing fine since surgery. Just feeling some tightness in the incision area. Dido what KelDC said.
It started yesterday with a little feeling of bump on my left side of the throat. Now when I woke up it feels like a freaking fork is stuck on the left side of my throat. I can't hardly swallow and when I do it feels like somebody is stabbing me hard on my throat. Worse is the fact that I think it has crept down even further my throat and my chest heavier then it has ever been. I can only tolerate soup and nothing else. I am trying not to talk as much either because that makes it painful also.
I experience feeling of throwing-up as I swallow (my stomach feels fine, but my “throat” act as if it is rejecting the food!). There is no associated pain during swallowing, and the only way to ease the process is to drink liquids with food. All of this is preventing me from eating large quantities of food necessary to gain weight since I am extremely underweight. Any ideas what is causing this problem? Thanks.
I have dull stomach pain just below the sternum. It hurts worse when I'm getting hungry but scared to eat to much cause I been getting this feeling that I need to throw up everyone I eat a little too much. I used to be Abe to eat rice and pasta but now can't seem to digest it. It seems to get stuck around my upper rib area and then I eventually end up throwing my dinner up. On June 1st I weighed 203. As of today, October 19th, I weigh 162.

Hello, I am a 48 year old woman, and for the past 3 or 4 years I have been encountering a problem when I eat. At times the food gets stuck in my throat, it causes a lot of pain in my sternum area and I begin to choke and gag. I can actually feel my throat force the food back up into my mouth. I have also experienced from time to time my throat going very dry and causing me to start to gag to the point of almost vomiting I take a deep breath and have to concentrate in order to not vomit.
I had a Hiatal Hernia where the stomach pushes up into the asophagas and causes pain similar to Heart attacks. I had other health issues and decided to have a Gastric Bypass 3years ago. Since then SWALLOWING became a problem and the acid reflux. I have searched and searched for an answer, after the doctors all shrugged their shoulders not knowing what to say.
before i started tx(on #7) i had an (rare)occasional bout of difficulty swallowing food. sometimes it would feel as if the food was stuck in my esophagus and i would have to down the water to get it through. it seems to have got worse while on tx. i was told 18 yrs ago that i had a hietal hernia when i was pregnant. it rarely bothered me over the last 18 yrs, except during certain exercises or movements that caused me to strain the upper abd. area.
I went to a doctor who said my breast were too large and reducing them would take care of the pain. (I was on the thiner cyle of my lift at this time.) Well it didn't. But this is not the sad part, frequent small high calorie meals, is. Weight gain only has compounded my problems. Now I feel like my pyloric value is shot and my gallbladder hurts.
He had his worst episode last night when eating dinner he even had pain along with the other problems as i stated before. He recently had a scope & they found no problems just a little iritation.
Like a lot of people, I probably had it long before I was forced to address the issue. I am currently on Pentasa and 6MP. All seem to be doing okay. However, recently I have been having a hard time swallowing. I can actually feel everything in my throat. Has anyone else experienced the same? I hate to go through any tests if anyone has suggestions. Wishing everyone long remissions!
Other things that cause bad breath are Kidney Disease (This smell is a chemical smell) and digestive problems (Where the smell is actually coming from the stomach). Her mouth smell should be better while on Pepcid if it is stomach related....Have you noticed any difference? Try this: Wrap a piece of cloth (Like a dish towel or gauze) around your finger....Put your finger in her mouth and rub all her teeth like you are brushing them...Make sure you get the back ones.....Pull it out & smell...
I have a problem swallowing too. About six years now. I've been scoped to my stomach. No visible problem. I just spit when practical. Usually only a problem after I eat. Sometimes at night too. I find that spitting clears my throat better then repeated attempts at swallowing. I work with a guy with a similar problem. He's been more aggressive, seen about seven doctors, lots of tests, no help. Sorry I can't offer more help. I do hope you find an answer.
You might want to do a search in the Search This Community box to find lots of discussions on this topic. I've had swallowing problems myself off and on for the past 6 months or so. It can be excrutiatingly painful. I've put off doing anything about it (except consulting my PCP) because I have so much else going on, but a bout a few days ago has led me to call the Swallowing Center he is referring me to. In a couple of weeks I'm set for a swallowing test.
I also have a lot of stomach pain and bloating and I'm trying to figure out if all this is due to the chiari or digestive problems. I got a script to have a barium swallow test done but haven't scheduled it yet. Between these headaches, throat and stomach issues I just feel so worn out!
We checked and there was nothing that we could see, but she was constantly licking her lips/paws/floor, swallowing hard (u could feel it in her stomach) and her throat seems to almost have a swollen lump in it....it probably lasted 10 minutes, after she had a drink of water everything was fine.
I HATE it. Sometimes it goes away and sometimesit gets so bad my stomach feels sick. It came on me suddenly, I hope it's more a physical and not a mental problem.
I used to walk the floor with such pain from my hiatal hernia, then I found if I eat alittle something it pushed my stomach out of my eshpogus and the pain stopped
I have the same thing only I have other symptoms like heartburn, upset stomach, cramps on sides of abs, gurgling in low ab and dull pain in rectum. My doc thinks it's a malfunctioning gallbladder. Went for a ultrasound today but don't have results and have to get an endo and colonoscopy too. I've also heard that the swallowing thing can be from stress as I'm worried sick about my health problems and tests.
Dr knew nothing about lap band, but I saw Cat scan showed dependent hyperdensity in gall bladder which may be sludge....i have NEVER had a problem with my lap band, and the pain swallowing is very uncomfortable. Also having lots of belching, feeling full, but am so hungry. i havent been able to eat for 4 days....not complaining about losing 7 lbs in those 4 days, but I think i will eventually need to get something down. I am keeping the antibiotic down.
Hi Welcome to the MedHelp forum! The chest pain and trouble in swallowing could be due to gastric reflux. Another possibility is hiatal hernia, where a portion of stomach herniates into the chest cavity through the diaphragm. Both can be diagnosed by an endoscopy. Crohn’s disease and IBS too often cause nonspecific pains. Also along with gastric reflux and hiatal hernia, ask your doctor to rule out diabetes and hypothyroidism. Hope this helps.
Kaul, I would be very happy if you could give me some info to feel comfortable about my problem. I have a pain on my left shoulder blade at one specific point ( sometimes radiating to the top , moreclose to neck but mostly at one specific point on the shoulder blade) after i swallow food or liquid. It does not matter whether it is solid or liquid. It has been going on for 6 months. I had my heart , throat, and neck & back checked with MRI.
I actually collapsed on the floor from pain and pressure in chest and stomach. It felt like a heart-attach althoug it was not. The shortness of breath is because the acid shoots up into the esophogus tube and inflames it immensely causing shortness of breath. Good Luck. The outcome is good if you keep up with your meds. What are you taking currently?
Since I cannot swallow I was sent home from the hospital after 2 weeks with a stomach tube. I have swallowing therapy once a week and do exercises at home. Next week I am having a stimulator treatment on my throat for an hour at a time 3 times a week. My hard collar is gone and now wearing soft collar. All pain gone except sore throat feeling that just started. Can swallow my own salvia but only about 2 oz of water a day. I am being feed 1200 calories through tube.
Hi there doctor, I diagnosed with GERD and Barrett's Esophagus for 4 years, and I did re-check with endoscopy again 4 months ago. The result's still the same which my BE's not growing bigger or got worse. 10 months ago,I invested too much money on the stock market, and then the world finance crisis occured.I lost a lot of money which everyday has made me very very worry. After a long period time(about 6 months) of worries due to my finance troubles.
That's your clue....From your description, your dog is in incredible pain and doesn't know what to do.......I assume the xray was only of the throat? This sounds more like an intestinal blockage & I'm surprised that your Vet didn't xray the stomach & intestinal tract which is where blockages most often occur...... Your looking at a long weekend coming and only have a few hours before regular Vet offices close......If this is an intestinal blockage, you don't have very long to wait.....
