Although current enrollment is far short of the required sample size, preliminary findings have not detected a signal indicating human teratogenicity for ribavirin. However, findings must be interpreted with caution concerning direct or indirect prenatal ribavirin exposures.
Most of the concerns raised about ribavirin's teratogenicty is a result of experimental animal tests. Ribavirin has been found to be teratogenic and/or embryolethal in several species of animals: in hamsters, ribavirin was associated with defects of the limbs, eyes, and brain; in rats, defects of the brain and eyes predominated -- but these were experiments exposing bone marrow cells.
Ribavirin Pregnancy Warnings
Ribavirin has been assigned to pregnancy category X by the FDA. Nearly all animal studies have revealed evidence of embryolethality and teratogenicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancies. One published case reports the uneventful use of ribavirin at 33 weeks gestation. Ribavirin therapy is contraindicated in women who are pregnant and in the male partners of women who are pregnant.

Animal studies have revealed evidence of teratogenicity when epinephrine was given in doses approximately 25 times the usual recommended human dose (on a per kg basis). There are no reports of teratogenicity in humans. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Epinephrine is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Quite so.There are quite a few side-effects like teratogenicity which occuopies the scientific mind more than these leeser known!
As my husband and I wish to have children and I ws concern about a side effects and risks been on medication the doctor said that although Cabergoline has not been demonstrated to cause any problems with teratogenicity, Bromocriptine is often substituted as more data is available so I switched to Bromocriptine 1.25 mg for 2 weeks then increased to 2.5 mg and the doctor said that my eventual required dose may be up to 30 mg daily.

s assistant called yesterday and said I am anemic and to take a shot of procrit. Also to reduce to 400mg/day ribavirin instead of my 800mg. I am in week 15 and have been UND at week three on triple therapy with incivek. Genotype 1a. Weigh 140 lbs. I was on 1000mg for 6 weeks and for the remainder of the time have been on 800mg. Yesterday I started on 400 mg and am worried about relapse. What is the role of ribavirin and just how important is it to SVR? I am on course for 24 wk.
