I have seen commercials that say Prozac and a list of other antidepressants could cause birth defects. But just like any other medicine, I would talk to your doctor about it.

i am not on anti depressants but about a year ago i was considering it and talked to my OBGYN about it and this is what he told me - Prozac is a safe anti depressant for pregnant women. Research has been done and shows that prozac doesn't cause birth defects. you should ask your OB about this and see what he/she says. Maybe she has the same or different take on things.

I'm with acline I Also had to get off Zoloft. And I'm pretty sure I've seen warning commercials of Prozac leading to birth defects. But I'm not sure.

I have a top NYC Obgyn and RE and neither one suggested I stop taking prozac while I was pregnant or trying to concieve. I think they may wean you off if you become pregnant and move into the late second trimester, but not before then. It will not harm the baby - only your anxiety and depression can hurt the baby or the ability to concieve. I take prozac, so check with your Dr to see if one may be better than another.

I took Prozac for anxiety and depression and it worked well for me for a couple of years. I eventually switched to Zoloft which was better for my anxiety. Though I stopped taking it as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Even though SSRI 's are considered one of the safest anti depressants that you can take while pregnant they have been linked to birth defects especially if taken during the first trimester.

I am 13 Weeks And my psychiatrist put me on 20 Mg of Prozac. Im worried If its really ok?

I thought you all should know how bad Prozac can really be. I have been depressed almost my whole life and was originally on Lexapro but it just wasn't doing it. My dr. switched me to Prozac and i was on prozac for about 2 months. That's when things got really bad I was having crazy suicidal thoughts and violent out bursts. I didn't know why! I am a very nice person and usually stay at home. One night i attempted suicide and had to be rushed to the ER.

Birth defects are actually pretty rare. I caught myself worrying about that alot too. Until I realized how rare and unlikely it was. But trust me when I tell you to please just enjoy this pregnancy and have faith that everything will be ok. Worrying so much takes away from all the joy you should have. I worried way too much and I look back and wish I hadn't. Theres nothing we can do other than take good care of our body, eat healthy, see our ob, and have faith.

I know they like to limit the amount of cafine and sugar. Can you drink cafine free? That's what I did with my daughter. This time its only water cuz everything else sounds yucky! Talk to ur Dr about it and see if they have any solutions. I know my friend couldn't get enough pop when she was pregnant!

Her surgerian told me whenever i was to get pregnant again i had to drink a higher dosis of folic acid to prevent birth defects, my ob prescribed me folic acid in pills which i have to take 4 of them every day im not taking no vitamins since he didnt prescribed none to me. I have to say im really concern about this pregnancy im so worried. Idk if any of you ladies had gone through something similar to this.

Ladies im really concerned and cant get excited because im scared ive caused birth defects to my baby. Before I knew I was taking chinese herbs and also had a typhoid inj as I was goin to bali. I stopped the herbs at 4 weeks but wudda been after implantation. I had the vax the day before ovulation but heard the vax stays in ur system for 14 days. Anyone else worried about medications they been taking or have any advice? I just cry and cant b happy.

Did you do the blood and amniotic testing? I think some defects can be picked up on an ultrasound and you would have been told by now. Is there a reason you are worried? Does something not feel right with your pregnancy?

I would like to comment on the use of the fertility drug, Clomid, for those women who were curious about the risk of birth defects, and give them the benefit of my 30+ years of research in the subject. Clomid has a long half-life and is biologically active up to 54 days after it is ingested. It is thus present during the development of the embryo, even when the drug was taken prior to conception.

Hi Elaine, it So I am now 23 weeks along with my pregnancy. All is going well except I have had a lot of anxiety from my 3 miscarriages last year. My dr recently put me on 10mg prozac which I only took for a week because I am going to try to get through the rest of my pregnancy without it and perhaps start up near the end for the postpartum benefits. But now I am worried because I have read that antidepressants can cause pphd in newborns if antidepressants were taken in late pregnancy.

t remember what the drug was that caused many birth defects and such was from the 80 and is no longer on the market. I lived off diclectin for two pregnancies (morning sickness up till day they were born) and they both are health.

I'm on thyroid med (levothyroxine) and it does not cause birth defects. I also have heart problems but nothing that could be changed with medicine so my doctor and I agreed not to try any more medicine now that I'm pregnant. I've tried several before becoming pregnant and nothing helped. My heart problem has gotten worse since being pregnant though. Good luck!

My daughter 15 yr old has been on prozac for two years. she also take birth control for mood swings. For the last month, she has been nauseated at school every Monday morning. I think it's anxiety, but wondering if the medications are causing it.

A couple of other larger studies have found no increase in the risk of heart defects, but perhaps a slight increase in the risk of other birth defects of brain, bone, and GI tract. Once again, these are very rare conditions so even if the increased risk is true, the overall absolute risk is pretty small. Of course, we do not know what long term effects on a baby using such medications would have.

I've been taking this medication since the beginning of my pregnancy for nausea. I can't function without it or I'll be throwing up constantly all day. Some days are better than others. I've been seeing articles and my husband said he saw the zofran bad drug commercial. It says it's been causes cleft lips and pallets, and some heart problems. I don't mean to scare anyone. I don't think my doctor would prescribe me anything that would hurt my baby.
