pancreatitis

Avatar f tn Pancreatic atrophy or fatty replacement is nonspecific, often due to senescent changes in elderly patients, less likely related to chronic pancreatitis or obesity. Your doctor may be decide to run additional lab tests if appropriate.
Avatar f tn Treatment for acute pancreatitis People with acute pancreatitis are treated with IV fluids and pain medications in the hospital. In up to 25% of patients, the pancreatitis can be severe and patients may need to be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). In the ICU, the patient is closely watched because pancreatitis can damage the heart, lungs, or kidneys. Some cases of severe pancreatitis can result in death of pancreatic tissue.
Avatar n tn I was a cna years ago... I remember reading about how elderly patients should not be lay on their left side for too long because it hinders blood flow. I want to find the written material on this before I share it aloud to a class. I feel it will be in a cna book for elderly care- thank you.
1807187 tn?1316861276 s possible the diagnosis could be pancreatitis, but you should ask your doctor for an exact diagnosis and also ask what diet you should be following for the condition you have. In general, most docs tell patients who have acute pancreatitis to follow a liquid diet for a period of time then slowly transition to a soft diet that is very low in fat. That can be followed up by changing back to a 'regular' low fat diet.
Avatar f tn IFN rarely causes Pancreatitis during tx (7 out of 1706 patients in this study) All patients' pancreatitis resolved after stopping tx. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15309891 There are over a dozen much more common things that might cause it. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pancreatitis/ds00371/dsection=causes "Pancreatitis occurs when digestive enzymes produced in your pancreas become activated while inside the pancreas, causing damage to the organ.
Avatar n tn Although results are comparable among older and younger patients, old age is generally considered a significant risk factor for early mortality and morbidity, partly because of the high incidence of coexisting disorders in elderly patients. However, in many elderly patients, survival and quality of life can be improved with valve replacement or repair. The overall perioperative mortality rate for aortic valve replacement in elderly patients is 10.
Avatar n tn I have looked up information on this med and it states that 1 out of 20 patients could develop liver damage. I was diagnosed with Pancreatitis on 10/14/08. I had never had it in my life. I am afraid this medicine has caused it. I have never ever picked up any type of drink other than diet pepsi and jucie. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am so scared and hurting.

Avatar m tn Hi Kelley. I'm so sorry to hear about your little boxer. Pancreatitis is a terrible disease for dogs (and people) to endure. If your vet hasn't yet performed an ultrasound, that will be the next step. They'll need to check to see how swollen the pancreas is, if there is something like a tumor or pseudo-cyst, or even a birth defect causing the trouble. It's even possible there is something blocking the pancreatitic or common bile duct at the root of the problem.
Avatar f tn From what I know, there is no link direct between pancreatitis and thyroid disorders in general. If low thyroid is present and results in high cholesterol, this could trigger a pancreatitis episode. Possibly autoimmune disease of the thyroid may be associated wit autoimmune pancreatic disease(and cause problems such as Type 1 diabetes) but not pancreatic disease in the sense of pancreatitis.
Avatar f tn In a small minority of patients, however, the pain continues. It is in these patients that further investigations are done, specifically to evaluate for SOD. The diagnosis of SOD is suggested by the typical pain or pancreatitis, such as you have experienced, along with lab evidence of pancreatic inflammation and/or abnormal liver enzymes. The diagnostic test of choice is a pressure study (manometry) of the sphincter.
Avatar n tn Hi, Scars and calcification in the pancreas are features of chronic pancreatitis. In this condition, the secretion of enzymes and hormones from the pancreas gets affected and this effect depends on how much of the pancreas is affected. There will poor absorption of the nutrients resulting in weightloss and nutritional problems. It may cause diabetes mellitus. It is also a risk factor for pancreatic cancer though the risk is not 100%.
Avatar f tn In fact, most Doctors have to re-adjust the dosage for their elderly patients on medications because the elderly respond differently to meds. So I guess what I'm saying is that your "elderly friend" should contact her/his Doctor immediately and let her/his Doctor know of these "agitate/angry" responses to her/his meds. Tarrie, since you came her on behalf of your elderly friend, maybe you can guide your friend in the process.
Avatar n tn I am being met with resistance and am concerned that the attending physician is completely in the dark about several studies regarding the negative effects of these particular drugs in elderly patients with dementia, or any helpful alternatives. Are there any alternatives to using antipsychotic medications in this case? I have a hard time believing he is being kept in this state for other than that it makes him less work for the staff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn i took care of an elderly male patient on admission his main complain was his legs and his left eye had minimal whitish discharge and by the 3rd day his eyeball was reddish and he seemed like he was crying beacause he usually had tears on his eye corners he was seen by an opthalmologist and was treated tobramycin eye drops and cyclogel however after a week when i saw him again his eyes was slowly melting, he had corneal abrasion and vitreous hemorrhage, and after 3 days his eyes was totally
897400 tn?1303329148 The dosage should be decreased in elderly patients and those with severe renal failure, but adjustment is not necessary in patients with alcoholism or hepatic impairment, or those undergoing haemodialysis.
Avatar n tn It could indicate whether you have pancreatitis. Parathyroid patients may have pancreatitis but it is possible that you have only gastroesophageal reflux.
Avatar f tn During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.
Avatar f tn I meant nothing negative in my use of the term "elderly" and do not refer to "elderly" as either useless OR impaired mentally. I know a lot of elderly people who are living very productive, happy lives. One of my favorite people is my 91 yr old aunt. When I use the term elderly, I simply refer to those of advanced age, in which category I, myself, might fit if being described by the right person(s)........
Avatar m tn While this and other clinical experience have not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients, greater sensitivity of some older individuals cannot be ruled out. Metformin hydrochloride - The initial and maintenance dosing of Metformin should be conservative in patients with advanced age, due to the potential for decreased renal function in this population.
530522 tn?1212918996 I have a daughter with chronic pancreatitis. She breaks out in hives, head to toe, when given the barium; and must be given more meds to counteract that... What an excellent alternative! From the story: "The study found that the images taken of patients who were given whole milk were just as useful as the images that were taken of patients given the diluted barium..." CT Scans "...
