Acute pancreatitis in elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Acute pancreatitis in elderly

Avatar f tn Reglan (metoclopromadine) is a very cheap medication, unfortunately, it is also metabolized in the kidneys, so a too high dose results in toxic levels in the blood. My husband and I discovered that completely bypassing the GI tract by using reglan injections worked much better in the end. Chica didn't get the extra pyramidal side effects (extreme restlessness, shaking and trembling) from the reglan injections that she got from the oral meds.
Avatar n tn Pancreatic pseudocysts occur as a result of acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic trauma. The most common causes of acute pancreatitis are alcohol related and gallstone related. Primary cystic neoplasms (benign or malignant tumors) represent about 10-15% of lesions and the rest are rarer lesions. Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is a solid mass lesion and occurs more commonly in elderly patients.
Avatar n tn I'm not a doctor but 2 weeks ago I ended up in the hospital following a bout with pain like many of you seem to have. It was diagnosed as pancreatitis. I don't know if it was acute or chronic...but it was maybe my 2nd attack. I saw my regular doctor Monday and she discussed my case with her GI friend at the PolyClinic here in Seattle. After reviewing recent blood work and her relaying my symptoms to him, he thinks it is a Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, considering my gallbladder is gone.
Avatar n tn The possibilities are - 1, Chronic pancreatitis with intermittent flare up ( acute pancraetitis on the background of chronic pancreatitis). 2. Pancreatic malignancy should be ruled out if there is no family history of diabetes and you are an elderly individual.
1916673 tn?1420236870 Not positive if I've joined (also having trouble bookmarking blog); but hope I'm in. First time I've been back in a few weeks since I had to put Teagan to rest. To be honest I hope to NEVER need to refresh myself on the terrible disease. But, you all gave me such comfort when Teagan left me. I hope to keep reading posts to keep up with you all.
Avatar f tn Anorexia ,nausea ,and vomiting may also occur, along with emotional disturbances. pancreatic carcinoma should always be suspected in elderly patients with abdominal pain or new-onset diabetes, depression associated with weight loss, acute pancreatitis without other know risk factors, or obstructive jaundice.
Avatar n tn did not proceed with the ERCP in case we created another problem ie; pancreatitis. she does not have constipation or hard stools but we know her bowel transit is slow, ie; may take 2, 3 or more days between bowel motions. vascular problems or narrowing of the arteries ? we'll look into this further.
1469903 tn?1286650297 A hyperosmolar coma usually occurs in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. Like diabetic ketoacidosis, a hyperosmolar coma is a medical emergency. Immediate treatment with intravenous fluid and insulin is important in reversing the hyperosmolar state. Unlike patients with type 1 diabetes, patients with type 2 diabetes do not generally develop ketoacidosis solely on the basis of their diabetes.
Avatar n tn it wasn't increasing in size. In early June of this year 2007, I started having intense pain on my right side near my gall bladder along with bloating, nausea & stomach upset. I was sent for an ultrasound & no stones were found in my gall bladder. They sent me home with Protonix and said call us in 2 weeks. I called them in 8 days and said I was feeling no better, still had pain in my side and constant nausea.
Avatar m tn but IMHO this is a pretty straightforward case (the whole article is open access BTW) - the acute stage of infection *is* in fact well-studied; it just doesn't come up much around here.. we've all gone through of it, this guy, probably thanks to a vigorous CTL response was one of the lucky 20% who cleared on his own. - HCV-RNA and other test results are given at the close of the paper (see their Table 1).
Avatar f tn well she was spry as can be until she had to have surgery in November for a tooth abcess... She was under anesthesia way too long and developed acute pancreatitis (she also came back almost blind because the stupid vet didn't moisurize her eyes and she developed corneal ulcers)...She recovered from that (still can barely see) but then her kidneys started failing and haven't improved since. She is skinny as a rail now....will only eat a bite or two occasionally (I supplement with Nutrical)..
544292 tn?1268886268 I got an email this morning from my Mother who says she's coming here in September? I can't even think that far in advance. I'm thinking stuff like, "I have to brush my hair and take a shower." It seems like an insurmountable prospect! I have such respect for anyone who has come off Tramadol and .... I don't know ... maintained a life? Mud mud mud everywhere. Walking thru mud. I just took vitamins and a big cup of Lecithin granules which are supposed to decrease anxiety.
Avatar f tn Two weeks after surgery I had my gall bladder removed and spent a week in the hospital with dehydration and pancreatitis. I have had that same stomach pain a couple other times since pancreatitis. Last week as I live by myself I had to call an ambulance as the pain in stomach was so severe. They did blood work and said my pancreais enzymes were elevated a little. Gave me pain pills and sent me home. I had a cat scan and endoscopy which did not show anything. Pain radiates to the back.
Avatar n tn It felt like it was just under my ribs, usually in the front but sometimes in my side and when most severe, in my back. It lasted for about 3 weeks and I just let it go, confident that it would just go away. In the first week of August the exact same pain came back. It was so severe that I called my MD after only 3 days. I had chest x-rays, abd sonogram and blood work. The only abnormality was my amylase which was 397. My lipase was somewhat elevated also.
Avatar f tn She has pancreatitis, I began a thread recently concerning that, and she spent this past week in the vet hospital getting nutrients only by I.V. and nothing by mouth, in an effort to rest the pancreas, and she's coming home this afternoon. She may get well and have no more problems, or there's this chance she may go downhill again and the end will be near.

Avatar n tn Call 911 or go to an emergency room right away. Avatar f tn They found that they think she had liver adenoma/ cholangiocarcinoma as well as acute myeloid leukemia. In spite of the fact that she had an end stage liver cancer, it seems, nothing to that effect showed up in her blood work until 4 days after the Convenia shot. At that point her AST was elevated but not tremendously and they thought she had an infection. 4 days after that she had become severely anemic, there was no sign of anemia in any of her blood work before this.
Avatar n tn Is it that uncomfortable feeling like there's not enough room in your left side for your organs? I also thought Shingles primarily affected the elderly: I'm 39 years old (and had chicken pox when I was 4). Can anyone explain further? This is the closest I have been to getting somewhere with this medical mystery! Thanks for allo fo your information and input. Carol D.
Avatar m tn It really does sound like she is in pain, and she is not the type of dog to ever whine or cry, she is very tough. Prior to this, the only time she has ever cried from pain was when I accidentally closed the door on her tail. It's not a constant moan, but somewhat frequent throughout the night or in the evening when we are watching tv.
Avatar f tn The autopsy showed she had acute pancreatitis cause by debris in her pancreas which led to multiple organ failure. No reason for it, she wasn't. A big drinker and was a healthy 66 year old. My mum really was my best friend, we did everything together. If I didn't see her for a day I would be in the phone several times a day. Nearly a year on I still cry myself to sleep every night. It makes me so sad she now won't get to see her grandchildren grow up and she lived for them.
Avatar m tn It is possible that they can last this long. Most people say they go away in a day or two, but in very sensitive dogs, it takes much longer. My dog was knocked flat by the loading dose and barely moved for the first couple of days. He bumped into objects, seemed blind, responded to sounds incorrectly (looked in the wrong direction), tripped, stumbled, and fell flat on his stomach a few times when trying to walk.
Avatar n tn Until the person reaches this point there are only educated guesses This is only reliable in the face of supportive care only. In other words no heroics. And an accurate assessment of level of consciousness may be skewed in the presence of drugs used to make the person comfortable. However, there is validity to the premise that pain will actually keep you alive longer, and it's always an ongoing challenge to find the balance of pain and/or anxiety control.
Avatar n tn hi there, I am in the same boat. I have gained 20lbs, in the last 2 months. My doctor thinks that it is my thyroid, its Underactive. I went for blood tests on Mon, and I go see the doctor today, so I will let you know what happens.
Avatar n tn Thats whats wrong with most dr's atleast in my experience in that they don't think outside the box enough possibly because this is what they learned. I think I/we can guess or prognose just as well or better than they can at times particularly if we know something about health and or ourselves and our own health. Never be afraid to speak up because I feel strongly that digestive tract problems are real and translate into other real nasty symptoms like this.
940391 tn?1255758976 They believe that it is nothing just normal nodules that many people get from a common type of bacteria in soil in some places, bird poo in others, etc. However I still have to continue with checks for all. Just had another skin biopsy three weeks ago and came back pre-cancerous (lentiginous junctional nevi with architechural disorder, moderate cytologic atypia (dysplastic nevus) according to shave biopsy.
Avatar n tn Pain under the left shoulder blade can be a signal that there is a problem with the stomach or other abdominal structures (ulcers, pancreatitis, ectopic pregnancy) or in the chest (myocardial infarction [heart attack], pericarditis, pleuritis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, aortic dissection)." Has anyone been given a diagnosis related to internal organs are opposed to muscular pain?
Avatar n tn Check out Acute Pancreatitis. A lot of the symptoms are similar. I am awaiting results of blood tests. Will update once I have more info.
