Levaquin for respiratory infection

Common Questions and Answers about Levaquin for respiratory infection

levaquin

I just started taking levaquin for upper respiratory infection. I have taken 2 (175mg) tablets so far after meal. All of a sudden, I started having this excruciating pain in my stomach. It hurts so bad that I cannot go to sleep. I used a stethoscope and heard bowel sounds (hyperactive in all 4 quadrants), but no bowel movement. I have had no luck with having any flatulence either. Will somebody please tell me what can I do to better manage this terrible side effect?
If this is a sphenoid sinus infection, will the antibiotics actually kill it if taken for a say six week course, and how should i approach the bronchitis that accompanies this problem, Augmentin is great stuff but, would the infection become resistant to it eventually, thank you in advance for your help, My life is actually beginning to really suck because of this and any help or relief or sugguestions would be so greatly appreciated.
I took 750 mg of Levaquin for 5 days for a respiratory infection and have been sick ever since. I have pain 24/7. I advise everyone to tell everyone they know to refuse this drug. I have MS and I was making progress prior to taking this medication. I feel as though I have taken 20 steps back since I took this medication. I have read that it can cause brain damage. My MS is concentrated in my brain, long term what should I expect.
Because this illness seems to be a first for you it sounds more like some kind of a sinus infection or other respiratory infection. Possibly viral since the antibotics don't seem to want to help. I'm 29 and I've had many similar infections, allergies seem to contribute to my illnesses starting. I've found that one of the best natural antibiotics is vitamin C. You can safely take large quantities, until you feel better.
She said I had a lot of congestion, and suspected I also had a sinus infection. I went on 10 days of a very strong antibiotic (Levaquin) in hopes of knocking out both suspected infections. Testicle and groin pain subsided while I was on Levaquin, but came back a day or two after I finished. The sinus infection has not come back, at least that I know of. I went back to the doctor 6 weeks after my potential exposure date, and had a full STD panel done.
That may have made me feel the best of all the antibiotics, although I credit Levaquin for clearing up the infection in the flesh in my nose.  Doxycycline just made me feel healthy, and gave me endurance. A couple of weeks ago, a UTI, and with bravery, I faced another dreaded doctor's visit.  The nurse asked me how I had gone shopping when I had a UTI.  I said compared to how I've felt in the last two years, this is nothing.  Seven days of Cipro.  Again, I felt better still.
I was on 875 mg of amoxicillin for respritory infection then the day i finished that I was given levaquin for a sinus infection I got while I was on the amoxicillin and now I have an ear infection with discharge and bleeding and the sinus infection is not gone? Is it possible to get all these infections one right after the other while on these anibiotics?
(I know now this is false reassurance) The symptoms persisted, I went to the DR and was diagnosed with prostatitis and given levaquin to take for a month. The symptoms did get somewhat better after a month but never went away, and seemed to change to some scrotal tingling, moderate itching (Not bad) and swelling of my scrotum and perineum. 2 times i had a milky discharge from my penis during urination. Sometimes it made it hard to sit in a chair without discomfort.
They finally tested for mycoplasma antibodies which were 10x higher than normal. He was put on Levaquin for 2 weeks. Then underwent another spinal to ensure that the fluid pressure was not still elevated. All tests were negative (2 MRIs included) except for the mycoplasma. It is now March 2012 and he has regained much of his strength and can tolerate physical activity. He visits a physical therapist to also improve his strength (after being on his back for 2+ months).
I have been treated with 4 different antibiotics for an infection in my sinuses. I began having yellow mucous out of just my right nostril and went to see a doctor on 12/7/09 where I was given a prescription for Omnicef. It caused me not to be able to sleep, so the doctor gave me Zpak. I took that and no changes in the mucous or sinus/ear pain.
My first thought was- what the heck is going on- I have this bad sinus infection , on meds for that for 20 days- it never goes away- was told to take celexa- (which I took at the same time as the anti-biotic)- and then started having attacks, tingling in my fingers and toes, and then I am being sent to a pyschologists? for anxiety or panic disorder.??? I really hope you get better and I did go to chiropractor ( I have not been in a few months though)...maybe I should go back for a visit.
It began with a respiratory infection that was treated with Levaquin. The respiratory infection eventually cleared, however, in the process I began to develop more concerning symptoms. Primarily, my symptoms have been severe loss of appetite, occasional night sweats, ache in upper right abdomen and a lightheaded foggy feeling. I've had extensive testing done by my primary physician, and most recently at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
My uncle was given some sort of shot for the gout, and was prescribed Levaquin for the respiratiory infection. The prescription for Levaquin was to be taken in addition to the prescription for Cipro. Is it safe to take the two antibiotics at the same time?
She went into respiratory failure and stayed on a respiator for approx 3 days. She is now off of that but the dr's are saying that she has a staph infection and is extemely contagious. They are saying that she is going to be unable to return here with me (where she has lived for the past year, just by choice, not medical) This recent illness happened 4 hours away from our house, on our way to a funereal. I had to come back home and one of my aunts is staying there with her.
A doctor examined me, noted severe infection/abscess, I had slightly elevated white blood cell count at this point, and she put me on cefdinir for 30 days. This helped diminish lump, but infection still spread, jaw became increasingly sore, and fever/malaise worsened into flu-like feeling but I had no respiratory symptoms.
I've now been infection clear for the last week. I will continue treatment for at least another week, although now just three times a day. All feels good so hope this helps someone out there. By the way, the Dettol cream is a bit stronger than the Savlon and stings the sensitive parts of the nostril for about 5 or 10 minutes after each application. Worth putting up with though.
If your doctor is worried that you might have pneumonia, a chest x-ray can look to see if there's an infection, especially for those who have coughed for more than 3 weeks. With a viral bronchitis, you should avoid antibiotics especially zpacks (Zithromax / azithromycin) which are overprescribed for these symptoms , and can lead to side effects and adverse drug reaction such as rash, antibiotic drug resistance and yeast infections.
Now I have had Pseudonomas since April and again am on oral Levaquin. The infection is isolated in the Ethmoid sinuses. When taken off antibiotics, infection resumes in 5 to 10 days. Another symptom, which appeared FIRST and NEVER GOES AWAY, EVEN WHEN ON ANTIBIOTICS, is inflammation of my eyelids which, at first, responded to Oral steroids....Now they do NOT respond to any type of oral or INJECTED steroids (right into the sinus).
He very well may have wanted to make sure you did not have some type of upper respiratory infection which many get durning or right after WD .Now levaquin is used for upper respiratory infections so that would make alot more since . Like I said I have been on levaquin many many times and never had any adverse effects at all it was one of the more effective antibiotics out there .
My upper respiratory went into bronchitis when I came across a smoker in Sept.. I then got a sinus infection and was given 5 more pills of levaquin after the other medication was finished. I went to the ER when I was not able to breathe well. I was diagnosed with bronchitis. I was given a medrol pak. I finished the levaquin I had and 1 medrol pak. After finishing the medrol pak I had alot of pain around my ribs, manubrium, and upper back. It was hard for me to breathe.
Further, some positive results come from past chlamydia-like infections of the respiratory tract, like bronchitis. If you have been at risk recently for a new chlamydial infection (unprotected sex with a new partner and so on), then having a urine chlamydia test makes sense. But not because of your current symptoms or past prostatitis. Chlamydia does not cause prostatitis and does not usually cause the sort symptoms you have described. I hope this helps.
The only thread of a possible solution I found in another comment, which I am definitely going to try. This person was given Levaquin, 500 mg, for 30 days & has had good success with it.

My prior medical history is gastroparesis (of unknown etiology) and was just recently treated for a sinus infection with Levaquin 750 mg for 5 days. I was also very nauseous and dizzy today for several hours. Had a vague pain behind my eyes. Any thoughts?
I came down with a respiratory infection in late October. Low fever, chills, fatigue, copious sweating. I was prescribed Levaquin for 7 days. In late November doctors discovered that the left side of my diaphragm is paralyzed. Can levaquin cause neuropathy of the phrenic nerve? I know it can cause neuropathy of the peripheral nerves. Thanks, in advance, for your help.
It did not cause me any problems. I also took Levaquin about 9 months ago for an ear infection, it caused me a GREAT deal of anxiety and panic with just the first pill. Levaquin/Avelox/Cipro are all in the same class of drugs, all quinlones. Because of this I was PARANOID to take the Avelox for this ear infection. I talked with one of the pharmacists at the Mayo Clinic when I was there and he told me that even though I had a reaction to Levaquin it doesn't mean I'd have one to Avelox.
In addition, I am also on the 4th day of Levaquin 750mg antibiotics for a respiratory infection. Would this increase/decrease exposure risks in any way? THank you for your time.

Physicians should advise patients, at the first sign of tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation, to stop taking the fluoroquinolone, to avoid exercise and use of the affected area, and to promptly contact their doctor about changing to a non-fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drug. Selection of a fluoroquinolone for the treatment or prevention of an infection should be limited to those conditions that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
