Common Questions and Answers about Is there ammonia in dog urine

ammonia

Avatar f tn The ammonia smell in urine as described by you, sometimes occurs in kidney diseases, when it is described as fishy smell. If the liver is decompromised it cannot metabolize the waste products hence there is an elevation of blood ammonia levels resulting in increased excretion in the urine. Also, increased levels of ammonia may also be seen with gastrointestinal bleeding, where the blood cells are haemolysed in the intestines, releasing protein.
1969477 tn?1327548419 It's quite probable. I know that bleach and ammonia create a deadly combination, but I don't know if the amount of ammonia in dog urine is concentrated enough to be hazardous. However, if it's indoors, not well ventilated even just the solution itself could be harmful.
190885 tn?1333025891 The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine. Ammonia levels in the blood rise when the liver is not able to convert ammonia to urea. This may be caused by cirrhosis or severe hepatitis. Take enough lactulose to have 3-4 bowel movements per day and your ammonia level will drop and you will feel better. Normal is 15-60 mcg/dL. It usually that a day or a couple of days for the ammonia levels to drop. I am not sure of your health status.
Avatar f tn Hi Thanks for writing to the forum! The smell of ammonia in the urine comes from "urea". Bacteria that contaminate the urine will convert chemicals in the urine into smelling chemicals that are responsible for the distinctive smell, such as ammonia. You can give his urine sample for testing. With a kidney stone chances of infection are high. Some foods like proteins cause the excretion of nitrogen compounds (ammonia and urea). Hence these foods can be reduced in diet.
Avatar f tn Once we rebuilt the house, I purchased a 1 year old from a kennel. We have a dog door that she can go in and out but she comes inside to pee. She is really good about doing her pooh outside but she seriously has come in from outside to pee. What do I do? She was said to be trained to a piddle pad - but she isn't. I know the problem is that she has gone in her living space for a year but there has to be help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn Is the ammonia in cat urine worse for your health than second-hand smoke?
Avatar f tn I think I started this post just to ask if he would excrete ammonia in his urine if his levels were high; it's beginning to appear to me that this is the case. Any idea if this is an early or later sign of the progression of this disease? Without him agreeing to see the doctor, I have to depend on the knowledge of others.
680807 tn?1304496587 It seems that the smell of urine is a strong indicator for diabetics, the ammonia smell in a diabetic is usually due to dehydration, so yes not drinking enough can be the reason for your urine smelling like ammonia. There are other causes too, and i would hope that it wasn't just assumed to be because you have diabetes and that you have had tests to rule them out eg urinary track infection. This lists common causes http://www.buzzle.com/articles/ammonia-smelling-urine-in-women.
Avatar f tn some medications can... but the most common cause of foul smelling urine is an infection in your urinary tract. See a doctor and get your urine tested.
Avatar n tn Urine is high in nitrates, compounds high in nitrogen and oxygen. Ammonia is made up of nitrogen and hydrogen. (NH3) What you are smelling is the high concentration of bonded nitrogen. Normally, diluted urine doesn't have much odor. If you're dehydrated and your urine becomes highly concentrated, it can have a strong ammonia smell.
Avatar n tn I've noticed that from time to time, but becoming more frequent, my urine has a strong ammonia smell. The color is fairly normal - clear to golden - but the smell is there! I don't have pain or burning while urinating nor do I go to the toilet more often than usual. So what can be the cause? Thanks for any ideas.
Avatar n tn This can be diagnosed by urine culture. Strong fruity odor is due to uncontrolled diabetes. Interestingly urine odor changes in menopause too. Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn Oh and when can i get her fixed cause her urine is starting to get the ammonia smell and im not liking it too much.
Avatar n tn How is your hydration? My understanding is being dehydrated will cause there to be excess waste in your urine which creates the ammonia smell and that can happen when we are dehydrated. Bladder stones and UTI's are other reasons. No other symptoms leads me to believe it is likely an issue with proper hydration and I'd try to increase it even if you feel you are currently drinking enough. Is the color clear?

Avatar f tn Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. A routine urine examination along with a urine culture will be able to detect the problem. Drink plenty of fluids and water and see if that helps. Also if you are on crash diets etc then protein breakdown can cause an ammonia smell. Also diet rich in protein can be the cause.
Avatar f tn It probably has nothing to do with the gender of your baby, but if the bleach foams and fizzles it could mean there is a larger than normal amount of ammonia in your urine. This could indicate a health problem, or it could simply mean that you are dehydrated. It is also possible that, if the concentration of ammonia is high enough, chlorine gas will form.
Avatar n tn Urine has ammonia in it. Ammonia mixed with bleach makes a VERY toxic gas.

722836 tn?1296077124 I moved into an apartment where the elderly woman had a hard time making it to the bathroom. My place smells like really strong urine. Is there a health risk to me ? I vacuumed and they had tried to mask the odor with baking soda because my vaccum was full of powder and fiber. I steam cleaned the carpet , but on a hot day it still smells like urine. Is there anything I can do? They won't put new carpet in.
Avatar f tn You can have cats you just can't clean the cat box.

It smells bad but not like the ammonia smell you get with a UTI. Hard to explain but plz anyone feel free to give input on this! Thnx!

Avatar m tn Ammonia odor can be associated with H. pylori. Ammonia can also be associated with urine and fecal material and not due to H. pylori.
Avatar f tn I have heard of this and it isn't safe at all nor remotely accurate. Urine has ammonia in it and when ammonia and bleach mix it releases a very toxic gas, and almost always when urine hits bleach it will fiz or foam that's what creates the gas. I had a friend who tried this once in high school, (just for fun, she wasn't pregnant nor did she want to be) and she ended up in the hospital from the gas it created. Sorry didn't mean to scare you just stating the facts.
Avatar f tn Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. I would strongly recommend you to see an urologist. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
