Avatar n tn I am overwright but consider myself athletic. I can smell the ammonia in my nose and on my breath. I've had blood work done and my liver function is normal, ammonia levels normal, blood glucose and a1c is normal. I have been diagnosed with non -alcoholic fatty liver and I have insulin resistance. Anything would be helpful!
Avatar f tn Hello and hope you are doing well. The ammonia smell in urine as described by you, sometimes occurs in kidney diseases, when it is described as fishy smell. If the liver is decompromised it cannot metabolize the waste products hence there is an elevation of blood ammonia levels resulting in increased excretion in the urine. Also, increased levels of ammonia may also be seen with gastrointestinal bleeding, where the blood cells are haemolysed in the intestines, releasing protein.
Avatar f tn I think I started this post just to ask if he would excrete ammonia in his urine if his levels were high; it's beginning to appear to me that this is the case. Any idea if this is an early or later sign of the progression of this disease? Without him agreeing to see the doctor, I have to depend on the knowledge of others.
Avatar f tn I don't smell it in my urine but more as a discharge. I do have two cats - which is what got my attention cause the smell was familiar. Now, I feel like there may be a little irritation but I'm not 100% sure that's not all in my head now that I'm worries because.... I do that.
Avatar f tn Hi Thanks for writing to the forum! The smell of ammonia in the urine comes from "urea". Bacteria that contaminate the urine will convert chemicals in the urine into smelling chemicals that are responsible for the distinctive smell, such as ammonia. You can give his urine sample for testing. With a kidney stone chances of infection are high. Some foods like proteins cause the excretion of nitrogen compounds (ammonia and urea). Hence these foods can be reduced in diet.
Avatar f tn The smell of your urine doesnt have to do with the pregnancy . If your urine smells like that you should get it checked out it might be an infection.

Avatar n tn Hi, How are you? Ammonia smell in urine could be due to bacterial infection in the urinary tract without regular symptoms of UTI, dehydration, consumption of red meat or high protein foods. I would suggest that you get a urine analysis with culture and visit a urologist for further confirmation. Best.
121828 tn?1333468091 Does anyone know what makes the guinea pig's urine smell so much like ammonia? I can't stand the smell, I'm so sensitive to it. I feed her pellets, apples, lettuce, celery,.....maybe something is more contributing?
Avatar f tn Anyone else have this? I'm 35 weeks and my urine smells like ammonia. No burning when I go no fever...
Avatar m tn I am a 42 yr old white male and have noticed a strong urine smell in the last 2 months. After I urinate a small amount leaks out onto my underpants and stinks. I don't believe it is sexually related cause it has been well over a year since I have had contact and I am on atenonyl once a day for an arythma. My concern besides a health problem is that someone else is going to smell this on my clothes eventually. Any ideas besides the dehydration theory?
Avatar n tn increased ammonia in urine - occurring as a result of dehydration or a bladder infection, infection with trichomonas vaginalis, hypermethioninemia, and Trimethylaminuria. As the last two are uncommon conditions, it would be better to rule out the initial two causes. If your urine is very pale yellow, it is unlikely that you are dehydrated. However, it would not hurt to ensure that fluid intake is maintained over 2000 ml.
Avatar f tn Another source of ammonia is urea in urine, which in acidic pH breaks down to ammonia. Some bacteria in urine too break urea into ammonia. You could be having urine infection with the bacteria breaking the urea into ammonia. I think you should consult your doctor and get the urine examined for infection, ketones etc. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted.
Avatar n tn Your sweat and sebum in the vulva can ferment urine so that the natural ammonia mixes with the secretions and bacteria to produce this ammonia-like scent. I have found success wearing only cotton knickers and went from pantyhose to thighhighs. Also, a very dilute white vinegar warm water wipe down of the vaginal lips, especially around the urethra (pee-hole) and under the clitoris helps, but I would caution you to do this gently. Scrubbing will irritate and make it worse.
Avatar n tn You need to drink more. Highly concentrated urine can smell like ammonia.
Avatar n tn I do not have any STD's and have had a few different urine checks in the past few years with negative results. I do not feel pain or bloating . My urine turns my light colored undies dark and my dark undies get bleached out in the crotch. This is getting old. I am 31 years old. I stay hydrated but find i am very thirsty all through the night. What should i be concerned about? I know this is not normal. Please Help..
Avatar n tn Hello, Ammonia smell in urine could be due to bacterial infection in the urinary tract without regular symptoms of UTI, dehydration, consumption of red meat or high protein foods. I think you should consult your doctor and get the urine examined for infection, ketones etc. You may also need to get a urine culture done. Frequent urination can also be due to urine infection or kindey conditions and diabetes. Your blood sugar levels also need to be checked. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn It is important to rule out UTI which can cause increased frequency of urination. Urine if held in the bladder for long time ferments and starts smelling of ammonia. Make sure you drink lot of water and pass urine regularly. If the symptoms do not resolve, please consult an urologist. Take care!

Avatar m tn like a kind of ammonia smell. Or urine smell. I've noticed this the past few days and it's even more uncomfortable than the others when around people. Anyway. I know all the other stuff are symptoms, but I havn't been able to find anything about this ammonia body odor. Is this something that occurs or what are the causes of this? I've read it can be a sign of liver or kidney damage. Has anyone experienced this with the onset of HIV? I'm waiting a little while longer to get tested for HIV.
Avatar n tn I never put it together because I didn't have sinus headaches or drainage until days or weeks after noticing the ammonia-like odors in places they shouldn't be present. It was actually my allergy doc who figured it out. As long as I keep the allergies under control with claritin or zyrtec, so they don't develop into a sinus infection, I don't smell odd things any longer. Hope it turns out to be that simple for you.
Avatar n tn I have that ammonia smell too and some wetness on my pantyliners. This is something new that just started happening to me. I did a search, which I shouldn't have done because it said a fistula! This sometimes can happen after a hysterectomy. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow if I still have it today. Madge reassured me that it could also be the stitches dissolving, which makes sense. hcora - have you had your hysterectomy yet?
Avatar n tn I did a lot of water mostly carbonated flavoured water as I don't like plain water much. I've noticed that my urine smells a lot ammonia, I tend to go to the toilet a lot especially at night time and sometimes when I go it's only a little bit that passes. I've also started experiencing lower back pain so I'm worried this maybe a bit more than a uti I also suffer from incontinence problems due to a previous autoimmune disease.
Avatar m tn My doctor thinks I'm crazy... Says if I had enough ammonia in my blood to smell it in my nose, I'd have serious mental issues. I always thought ammonia was a later stage cirrhosis issue and not an early warning. I didn't have this problem when I was drinking more. It has only developed during (slow) withdrawal. I know lots of fats come out of your liver during alcohol detox and I'm hoping this is just a artifact.
Avatar m tn What can cause a ammonia smell in sweat and Colin? the girl had the same smell.
Avatar n tn My urine has a very very strong ammonia smell and my vaginally gets a dead animal smell i don't have std never have I'm not on birth control i did suffer from chronic urinary.
Avatar m tn For at least 2 to 3 months I've been experiencing ammonia type body odor to a weird meaty body type odor. It's like I can actually smell ammonia in my nose. Sometimes it feels as if it's in my throat. Other times I can taste a "meaty" type of odor smell? I know this sounds weird but please bear with me on this. It's not my imagination working over time either! My car and apartment takes on my body odor.
