680807 tn?1304496587 Hey Rita, Your question has come through to the MS community, and not the diabetic community, so ammonia smelling urine may not be something many have experienced. I'd heard of it but couldn't remember much, so I did a simple google search "diabetic urine smells of ammonia", there is a lot that comes up that you might find helpful in understanding it.
Avatar f tn Bacteria that contaminate the urine will convert chemicals in the urine into smelling chemicals that are responsible for the distinctive smell, such as ammonia. You can give his urine sample for testing. With a kidney stone chances of infection are high. Some foods like proteins cause the excretion of nitrogen compounds (ammonia and urea). Hence these foods can be reduced in diet. Hope these tips help. If symptoms persist consult an urologist.

12773 tn?1328913186 but sent it off anyway, and will get back to me, one thing I didnt mention to her was the smell of Ammonia I had started smelling the day before. Its not on my skin, or anything, I do bathe everyday and use soap. But just in my nose. I have been a bit snuffy and hoarse the past few days, as a sick co worker refuses to cover her mouth. , but doc says there is alot of that going around.
Avatar n tn Interestingly urine odor changes in menopause too. Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Avatar f tn Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. A routine urine examination along with a urine culture will be able to detect the problem. Drink plenty of fluids and water and see if that helps. Also if you are on crash diets etc then protein breakdown can cause an ammonia smell. Also diet rich in protein can be the cause.
9171934 tn?1405180032 Kitties just have ammonia in the urine and while it smells super nasty it won't harm the baby because its not concentrated enough. Breathing is safe, touching not so much.

Avatar n tn increased ammonia in urine - occurring as a result of dehydration or a bladder infection, infection with trichomonas vaginalis, hypermethioninemia, and Trimethylaminuria. As the last two are uncommon conditions, it would be better to rule out the initial two causes. If your urine is very pale yellow, it is unlikely that you are dehydrated. However, it would not hurt to ensure that fluid intake is maintained over 2000 ml.

Avatar f tn Lol... The smell of cat urine or feces will not cause miscarriage or birth defects. The worry is toxoplasmosis which is a micro organism which can be contained in some cats with no signs. I have 6 cats and am a veterinary technician. Have someone else clean the box or wear gloves. You will be fine.

Avatar n tn Recently, I have been smelling something similar to urine that is nonexistent, walking through the grocery store (different grocery stores), in the pool, in the yard, one minute it is there stronger than life and the next it is gone. Today when it happened I was in the pool with my sister, she didn't smell anything. I have actually had to leave stores because the smell was so overpowering, yet no one else seemed to notice. Is this just my imagination? Should I have it checked out?
Avatar n tn It would be a good idea for you to drive him as he is a hazard to other people not only himself, I dont know about smelling ammonia but I wondered if he eats before he goes out as it could be low blood suger or even diabetes he should have a sugar test done, does he take any meds as sometimes there are side effects, any anti histimines that are not non-drowsy? If he passes out he definatly should go back to the Doctor and tell him and DO NOT let him drive ...
152660 tn?1291755571 I saw an issue with this on "My Cat From Hell" and you have to use a cleaner w/an enzyme in it to get rid of the ammonia, etc, so your cat can't smell the urine any more and continue to want to use the same areas. What also was occurring in this episode was this cat felt she had no area of her own-make sure your cat has her own "territory" w/ her own climbing toys, window look-outs, etc, and adequate litter pans-esp in the offending area.
Avatar f tn Am waiting for an ultrasound to determine whether I have a kidney stone or fibroidsa(due to occasional spotting after intercourse), however the last couple of days the abdominal pain has worsened and I now have an ammonia-like smell in my urine. Could the original thought of kidney stones be the right one?? I can't see where fibroids would affect the smell of my urine. There is no pain with the urination or discolor to the urine. Still have the back pain as well.
Avatar n tn The shedding you'll have to live with and just brush her daily. Is she receiving a good quality cat food (i.e. not one of the grocery store brands that contains as the main ingredient ground corn?). As far as the inappropriate urination, make sure you clean up the area so the smell of the urine doesn't remain (don't use ammonia). The cat will continue to be attracted to these places.
