Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia in the urine

ammonia

Avatar f tn Hi Thanks for writing to the forum! The smell of ammonia in the urine comes from "urea". Bacteria that contaminate the urine will convert chemicals in the urine into smelling chemicals that are responsible for the distinctive smell, such as ammonia. You can give his urine sample for testing. With a kidney stone chances of infection are high. Some foods like proteins cause the excretion of nitrogen compounds (ammonia and urea). Hence these foods can be reduced in diet.
Avatar f tn Chemicals (one being ammonia) normally detoxified by the liver accumulate in the bloodstream because the liver is too damaged to properly clean them from the blood so these toxins go to the brain and can disrupt normal brain function causing confusion, sleep disturbances, slurred speech, drowsiness, stupor and finally coma, which can be fatal without emergency care.
Avatar f tn As they were talking, the meter went over 25, then over 40, then over 60, then I think it stopped in the 70s or 80s. And the people were all standing and talking in the room, so it is not like they would automatically keel over or anything. But the vet explained that the body is less able to get enough oxygen into the bloodstream when it is breathing this much ammonia.
Avatar f tn I copied and pasted this info from WebMD. IUn used "urine and ammonia" in the search field. Within the article was a subsection dealing with smell. Here it is. I hope it helps: Odor Changes Urine normally doesn't have a very strong smell. If you get a whiff of something particularly pungent, you could have an infection or urinary stones, which can create an ammonia-like odor. Diabetics might notice that their urine smells sweet, because of excess sugar.
680807 tn?1304496587 It seems that the smell of urine is a strong indicator for diabetics, the ammonia smell in a diabetic is usually due to dehydration, so yes not drinking enough can be the reason for your urine smelling like ammonia. There are other causes too, and i would hope that it wasn't just assumed to be because you have diabetes and that you have had tests to rule them out eg urinary track infection. This lists common causes http://www.buzzle.com/articles/ammonia-smelling-urine-in-women.
Avatar n tn I have ammonia smell in urine and have had a bad headache for a week. One of the meds I amon is coumadine a blood thinner. Could I have thinned my blood to thin and now have ammonia in my blood? What could cause the headaches? Is it serious?
Avatar n tn I have the same problem with the ammonia smell in urine? All tests and color are fine. I don"t drink water. Tea and diet soda's. I have no insurance to go to urologist. Is there anything over the counter for cure? It is terrible.
Avatar n tn eating a new diet like increased quantity of meat or asparagus, taking Vitamin supplements (specially Vit B), urinary tract infections, diabetes mellitus including diabetic ketoacidosis. As diabetes and UTI also cause urinary odor, it is good for you to immediately go to a doctor and get yourself checked for the above conditions. Both of them cause increased frequency of passing urine and so one ends up dinking more water.

Avatar f tn Old urine for me means ammonia, an ammonia smell which the body can release for several reasons. Maybe see a GP first and have some blood test done? And if you’re taking any fancy supplements try not to for a bit?
Avatar f tn I have heard of this and it isn't safe at all nor remotely accurate. Urine has ammonia in it and when ammonia and bleach mix it releases a very toxic gas, and almost always when urine hits bleach it will fiz or foam that's what creates the gas. I had a friend who tried this once in high school, (just for fun, she wasn't pregnant nor did she want to be) and she ended up in the hospital from the gas it created. Sorry didn't mean to scare you just stating the facts.

Avatar n tn Lately when I urinate, it smells very strongly, but not of ammonia or of any of the other common complaints; more like animal urine (a very strong urine smell). I drink a lot of water, urinate regularly, and have no other symptoms. What could this be, should I be worried?
Avatar f tn Get a little bit of bleach and put it in a cup and take your urine and poor it inside the bleach if it foams and fizzles it suppose to mean girl if it does nothing at all it suppose to mean boy.
Avatar n tn Urine has ammonia in it. Ammonia mixed with bleach makes a VERY toxic gas.

Avatar f tn Every morning for the past two months my urine in the mornning smells very strong. The smell is almost similar to the smell of stale urine. You know that smell when urine sits for awhile.. kinda like that. And it's only really strong in the morning. It doesn't hurt to pee or anything... so should I be worried?
722836 tn?1296077124 t know if this will help but I would try using a biological washing powder on the carpet - I know it works with animals where the ammonia smell is really strong so perhaps it might help on human urine. With regard to a health risk I would assume not (although don't quote me).
