1008841 tn?1293602560 It measures the level of ammonia in your blood. When it is high it is not much fun. The explaination in Hector SF's post is so accurate. The first indication for me that it is high is that my hands shake and I can't write and it's hard to hold fork or spoon. I also get confused easily and can't sort things out. Sometimes I think I'm okay - until I get it in control again and look back. Lactulose has been part of my regime for quite awhile and I know when I need to up the dose.

Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted.

The test results came back ok, with the red blood cells in my urine at +15. The doctor was not concerned as there was no sign of any infection. This morning, for the first time I smelt a strong ammonia smell when I pee'd. I have not smelt it since when I went during the day. Theres no itching, the groin pain is there now after being at the gym.

Avatar n tn Hello, Ammonia smell in urine could be due to bacterial infection in the urinary tract without regular symptoms of UTI, dehydration, consumption of red meat or high protein foods. I think you should consult your doctor and get the urine examined for infection, ketones etc. You may also need to get a urine culture done. Frequent urination can also be due to urine infection or kindey conditions and diabetes. Your blood sugar levels also need to be checked. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn It is important to rule out UTI which can cause increased frequency of urination. Urine if held in the bladder for long time ferments and starts smelling of ammonia. Make sure you drink lot of water and pass urine regularly. If the symptoms do not resolve, please consult an urologist. Take care!

Avatar m tn Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
