Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with stage 1 ER/PR+ breast cancer 6 mos ago. I had a lumpectomy and radiation. I had my ovaries removed 3 mos ago due to cysts and endometriosis resulting in surgical menopause. I am having severe hot flashes, night sweats, etc. My oncologist suggested Effexor which has not worked. She wants me to start Arimidix soon. I had a bone density scan and it came back -2.1 (osteopenia). Based on the bone density scan and the hot flashes, I do not want to take Arimidix.
Avatar n tn It is not unheard of for athletes that do not get their period to have osteoporosis or osteopenia and stress fractures because their bones are not getting the estrogen they need for good bone strength and development. I highly recommend that you see your gynecologist to make sure the only reason that you are not getting your period is that you are underweight and if there is no other reason then that to get on some sort of estrogen replacement or birth control pills.
Avatar f tn I have unfortunately not improved since taking 1200 calcium plus D for 5 years now but then again I have zero estrogen in my body which I think also plays an important role along with everything else including the thyroid. I realize plaque in the arteries is nothing new, not sure how much calcium it would take to cause it but just relaying that my Endocrinologist didn't seem so keen on large supplements of it.
Avatar f tn Hi- My doctor told me that the latest school of thought is women need estrogen replacement only. He said this actually reduces breast cancer risks and tends to make heart healthier. the estrogen-progesterone combo is now thought to increase breast cancer risks and be unhealthy for the female heart. I had my tubes and ovaries out last Thursday, and personally I plan on not taking any hormones unless I develop symptoms i can not deal with.
Avatar n tn I had a lumpectomy ( 5, 5 cm of benign tissue with microcalcifications and near it 12mm of tubular carcinoma, estrogen positive). I would like to know if there are any studies available of the recurrence rate of grade 1 tubular carcinomas, since I have to take tamoxifen and i was kind of trying to avoid it. I´m having six weeks of radiation therapy. If the recurrence rate is low, why taka a drug that has such side effects?
Avatar f tn I needed additional views, so I returned three days later for a second mammogram of the left breast only, and it showed a nodule. I had an ultrasound the same day which showed an 8 mm benign cyst and several other subcentimeter benign cysts, some with low internal echoes (what are internal echoes?) I've been on Prempro over 10 years and understand this could be the cause of the benign cysts. For the last couple years or so I've been on a very low dose (0.3-1.5).
Avatar f tn I haven't been feeling well for a long time up to a year, my Thyroid tests were a little out of range last year on the low side, this year they are in range. My cholesterol is 196 range is below 200, I have severe osteopenia, I am cold all the time, weight gain, unable to lose weight, fogginess, unable to focus, memory loss, slight depression, no drive or ambition, severe dry skin. My estrogen was very low - I finally went to an endocrinologist today and I feel like still no answers?
Avatar m tn I've been taking prevacid 30 mg TWICE a day for 10 years. Once a day before that. Doc says should be no problem. I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis in my spine (aver. -3.2) and osteopenia in my hip. I am very active, martial arts instructor. 5'11" and 185 lbs. I was told to cut back the Prevacid to once a day. My blood work shows no obvious problems. Has prevacid been linked to Osteoporosis?
Avatar n tn There are a number of different methods... Upper Cervical techniques, as well as instrument-based techniques are advised. Avatar n tn You should follow up with bone density scans and visits with your dr. Yes, it get worse. My mom went from osteopenia to full blown osteoporosis in one year as confirmed on a scan. Be sure to take the right amount of calcium, vit.d and get some sunshine too. Also, walking and light weight lifting are said to help. Sodas are known to deplete calcium levels so it may be wise to not drink soda. You should really see your dr.

Avatar n tn Recent xray report says osteopenia, despite a life of too much food and an extreme amount of weight-bearing. (My extreme Diet Coke intake probably explains the deficiency.) So I bought Viactive caramel chews which supply calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. Faithfully taking them-cheap and taste so damn good it is hard to limit myself to the daily dosage lol.
Avatar f tn He has chronic fatigue but that could be due to other issues, BMI is a bit high and has osteopenia. Our doc is stumped! Can he wait 3+ months to see endo? Thanks!
1415174 tn?1453243103 My 80 year old nieghbor only has osteopenia. She has taken estrogen replacement for years though but is over weight. But my friend who is thin and older than me (60's) has osteopenia not osteoporosis. So I didn't know what to do. I don't want to get fat to gain bone. But I can walk more and stop sitting so much. But I don't know if that will replace the bone I lost?
Avatar f tn I am 48 yrs. old and was diagnosed with b/c in July of 2008. I have undergone a lumpectomy, chemotherepy -AC/T and radiation. I finished this course last spring. I was also on tamoxifen until about four weeks ago. I had an ooferectomy almost 2 weeks ago as a precaution, as my mother died of ovarian cancer at the age of 59. I felt great until I started Arimidex on Tuesday, and now I feel horrible.
Avatar f tn I am no longer taking Evista, but while doing some research to see if I wanted to go back on it for my osteopenia, I found some references to a correlation between Evista and ovarian cancer and wondered if that could have had a bearing on my case. This discussion is related to Evista and Ovarian Cancer.
Avatar m tn No problem ... VENT AWAY ... it's good for you even though it doesn't really solve any of your problems. I doubt that after this length of time the side effects will go away but I question the liver polyps as one of them. I hope you have discussed this issue in detail with your Oncologist; if not you need to do that very soon. It's possible that you could be switched to another medication but keep in mind that most drugs of this type can have the same side effects.
Avatar f tn I'm not surprised to hear that you have osteopenia. I also have osteopenia as well and I'm in my 30's. If you have osteopenia, you are at greater risk for getting osteoporosis. The normal treatment is vitamin D supplementation, but there is now some controversy surrounding that. There are people now, including myself, who believe that a low vitamin D level does not cause the disease, but it is rather a symptom of the disease... and that vitamin D supplements will make it worse.
Avatar f tn Have you heard of Vagifem? It's a non-systemic hormone that is just used vaginally, not a pill, or a systemic estrogen. For years after having a complete hysterectomy, I was on a gel, Estragel or something like that, where you rubbed the gel on your arm. I was told it was safer than an oral estrogen or shots or patches because it didn't have to pass as much drugs through the liver.
Avatar f tn I would check first to make sure your insurance company will pay for the test. The test rules out osteopenia and osteoporosis. I know I have osteopenia and many other women and even men with CFS and fibro have osteopenia or osteoporosis as well.
Avatar f tn Because I have recently had polyps and overgrowth of endometrium, I had to stop using them. I was without estrogen for some time in this year, and then I used local estrogen (Vagifem) and Vaginal balans. My vagina and vaginal atrium and urethra are in poor condition. I have also had osteopenia previously. And I have hypercalcemia, I should not use calcium pills. Could it be possible that I have cystitis or vaginitis? I hardly have any discharge from vagina.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia. I took the stuff for about 6 years, and each of my bone density test results were a little worse than the previous one. Recently I learned that many women who took this medication for as long as I did got femur fractures as a result. When a doctor on ABC national news suggested that women stop taking it after 5 years, I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss stopping this med. My doctor agreed, but now suggests that I take Evista.
