I have heard sooooo many stories of people gaining weight on Zoloft. I am quite small and gaining a few pounds makes a huge difference on me. In the first month I lost a couple pounds which is OK. I am wondering how people gain weight..... is it that your metabolism changes, or is your appetite stronger? I will not tolerate gaining a bunch of weight and I just want to know what to watch for.
I am 26/Female, 5'4", and weight about 145 pounds. I just started on Zoloft to help with some anxiety issues I have been having. My goal is to lose about 10 pounds just for my health. I am worried about gaining weight on Zoloft and can't seem to find an answer as to whether it is the medicine that makes you gain weight, or mentally feeling better that makes you eat more and you gain weight.

My advice, only because I've been through this my whole life..is to express your concerns about weight gain on these types of medication. I've found a good combination of meds for my bipolar. My doctor informed me that these meds I'm on are weight neutral. Lamictal, and bupropion xl. I've been on Lamictal for almost 5 years now and no weight gain at all. I know people ask what's more important, happiness associated with meds that make you gain weight or skinny and unhappy.
I would have to agree that medications can and will affect us differently. There are definitely pros and cons to taking meds, but other than the weight gain, did Zoloft work well for you? As Paxiled said, it can be really hard to find the right med. Also, are you currently in counseling for your anxiety?
in the mix of the next few days I forgot to take my Zoloft and I was feeling a lot better. Mind you, I had just began taking Zoloft to begin with so it wasn't in my daily routine to continue taking it. A few days later, I took my Zoloft again and the pain came back. My family and I realized the cause.
Long story short, my time taking Zoloft was short. Maybe two weeks? Barely three? But, I noticed shortly after my weight went from 150/151 range in the mornings to 152...153...154...
I was on 20 mgs for less than 2 weeks and had to cut it down to 10 mgs because of feeling tired and gaining weight. Was still gaining weight so I cut it down to 5 mgs and no problems.
I'm kind of surprised your still having symptoms after being off of it this long.
You should get in to see your Dr to find out what's going on. It may not be from the meds after all. Or, you may be one of those people that it takes much longer for the side effects to go away.
I've been on Zoloft for about a year now. I've gone to various sites and looked at user reviews ect. My psychiatrist has been getting testy with me about changing my medication so I don't really feel like talking to him about it. I get very self conscious and. This summer I weighed 93 lbs. I have a very small body frame and I'm very petite and not even 5' 2", I was very happy with where I was at.
I have tried many antidepression medication with severe side effects; gastritis and weight gain. I am presently on 20mg Prozac which is ok on my stomach but is ineffective with the depression and of course weight gain. I'm thinking of trying Zoloft. Does it bother your stomach. I've pretty much accepted the weight gain, but can't handle the stomach pain & depression. Ialso take 0.5mgof Ativan daily. Any advise?
I was wondering, at what dosage did you notice a gain or loss of weight? I've read about people either gaining or losing weight, but no one says what dosage they're on. I'm taking 25mg right now and the doc and I were talking of moving me to 50mg. Standing at a whopping 5ft, I of course worry about the weight gain.
The main complaint I see around is that the Mirtazapine causes you to gain weight. I've lost weight recently, so gaining weight is a welcome side-effect to me.
I am 20 years old and have been rapidly gaining weight for the past 9-10 months. I have gained about 60 lbs and have been doing everything right. Excecising and eating right on a regular basis as well as taking vitamins. I haven't had fast food or any junk/snack foods in forever. The only thing that has changed is I have been taking antidepressants. First I took Lexapro then Cymbalta and now Zoloft.
ve done research, and so far I know the only anti-depressent to not have a weight gaining effect, it actually has loss of appetite effect, is Effexor, but is in a different class and can affect people different ways. But this needs to be discussed with your husbands psychiatrist. I trully feel you being open and honest with how you feel with your husband is important, and giving him some options of what you would like to see happen. I wish you both good luck.
I have been on both citalopram and prozac but citalopram was longterm weight gain, dry mouth and headaches and prozac major short term weight gain. Came of prozac for that reason after only a few months and wonder if it would've settled with time, or go back to the one i was on for 12 years but had some side effects including weight gain.
Doc says my last option is mirtazapine but it is also an appetite stimulator.
Some people love Zoloft. I did not. I was on it for many years & it made me tired all the time. I never wanted to go anywhere or see people while I was on it. It made me withdrawn. I didn't want to do anything. I had no energy. I didn't care about my home, bills, my marriage. I was in a fog. I still had some anxiety. My husband couldn't understand why I couldn't do simple things like laundry & such. He thought I was being lazy. Nope, it was from Zoloft!
I would get a full 7 hours. The main problem with Remeron is the extreme weight gain, and the combo of Remeron and Ambien made me sleepwalk.
Since I'm now pregnant, I'm not allowed to take these drugs, but found another alternative therapy. Lately, I've been taking two Benadryl at 11pm and then when I wake up at 3am, I take another Benadryl. I'm still not sleeping that well, but this has been the best therapy for me so far for pregnancy.
Before Celexa, I was on Zoloft, and the first week on Zoloft I lost weight, but then stabilized and slowly began to gain weight. the weight gain was not a big amount but it did happen.
Then a few yrs later, I began having problems on Zoloft so my Doc switched me to Celexa, and "whamo!", BIG WEIGHT GAIN! It was amazing!
On top of the weight gain, Celexa has made me lethargic and very tired. My Doc knows of all these symptoms,btw.
