t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.

Hi many of us do experience some visual disturbances.....but it is also possible for the med Zonisamide to cause some issues. I am not sure if this is a Chiari issue or a med issue but do let your Dr know what you are experiencing ...he/she may decide to change your meds to try to determine if it is the meds or Chiari.

Hello and thanks in advance for any thoughts. Our 5 y.o. Basset/Beagle mix was officially pegged with epilepsy about 2 months ago after she started having multiple seizures in a day. She was initially put on Zonisamide but after 2 weeks, she had a couple more seizures. At that point the docs added Phenobarbital. We've had her blood tested and the PB is at the proper levels in her system. The good news is she's not had any seizures since then...

Hi There. I know what you are going through. My dog (12 year old Beagle) started having seizures in Jun 2014. My dog went through about the same thing your dog is going through. Apparently, my dog is very sensitive to PB. Have tried several dosages on her & she does ok with a very, very low dose but the seizures come back in 2-3 wks. Right now she is taking 1/2 tab in a.m., 1/2 tab in p.m and every other evening she takes 1 full tab (this is 16.2 mg).

She is on 200 mg zonisamide every 12 hours and 1 gr. of pheno. Is this maybe too much. She has been on them 9 days and side effects are worse every day. Today she was wedging herself in any corner she could and now I am having a hard time waking her. She is urinating while sleeping and it takes about a half hour, or longer to get her to wake up. I did call the vet today, but am waiting for a call back.

Had never heard of it until last Thursday! I started on 25mg last week. I will increase by 25mg every week until I'm at 100mg (or I feel great... Whichever comes first!). Melo had 4 seizures in the span of 2 hours, he's taking 300mg of Zonisamide every 12 hours but before take refill arrived he had ran out and that's when the seizures happened.

I am finding that even a simple trip to the grocery store is to much excitement for my daughter, she is happy and enjoys life. She just gets so excited in a happy way withn anything we do that she is almost daily having these episodes. I am wondering if we are using the right meds, or if there might be something better out there to help her relax more without compermising her. Also any ideas on diagnosis?

I have been having bouts of double vision for the past year. I have been screened for MS and a brain tumor. Doctor's stuck. Has anyone had a problem with this, too. I used to have migranes years ago, but my aura was a different kind of visual disturbance. I don't get very bad headaches with these episodes but my head starts to hurt some of the time. Thanks.

I saw the doctor for the first appt and she put me on Zonisamide as a migraine preventative and Maxalt-MLT 10 mg as a rescue medication as well as ordering some labs, an MRI and an MRA. All tests came back normal. The Maxalt worked well when I got the migraines but insurance wasn't too happy with it so we had to switch. She then put me on Relpax which didn't work at all.

It seemed the Lyrica and Effexor combined worked for the pain, I went to a neurologist and he took me off the Lyrica, which made me gain 60lbs! lol... and put me on Zonisamide. It has been great for my pain. But now that aI have been on it awhile I am feeling sick to my stomach every morning and my head feels fuzzy. I asked if I could get off the Effexor as it was raising my blood sugar levels, I am a diabetic & Cymbalta and Effexor raises my blood sugars).

I have seen a Chiropractor and PT for many months, it may help for a day but the pain soon returns. Is there something being overlooked? What can I ask my Doctors to check?
