About Valtrex I can only give you my personal experience of it,I was on Acycilovar which worked well for me then for no reason at all my Doctor changed me over to Valtrex after a couple of months I had to go back and ask to be put back on the Acycilovar as the Valtrex didn't seem to be working for me I don't know anything about either drug or if they are essentially the same I just know Valtrex didn't work well for me.
Back pain can accompany genital herpes outbreaks, but even this is rare. HSV is not a known cause of chronic, ongoing back pain.
What do you mean by "never told her my diagnosis"? Do you have genital herpes? Or a positive HSV blood test?
Even if you do, I doubt Valtrex will make any difference in your back pain. Probably the ID doc prescribed it hopefully but not really expecting it to help.
Herpes absolutely causes low back pain, buttock pain and leg pain below the buttocks. I have had herpes since 1989 and I ALWAYS know when an outbreak is imminent because of these symptoms. Know your body and pay attention to the ailments that immediately precede an outbreak. Unfortunately it seems I know more about the virus than any of the doctors that have treated me do. And they don't seem interested in learning, only prescribing expensive Valtrex. SMH.
Is the pain people talk about with a herpes outbreak the actual open sores that are painful or is it a generalized pain ? The pain I am experiencing is like someone has the tip of my penis in a vice... I am going out of my mind becuase it literally has been 2 years of on and off pain and this irritation/ stinging/ tingling sensation... ejaculation makes the redness/ stinging worse- any advice would greaty be appreciated...I can not get the thought of herpes out of my head.
When I discontinued Valtrex, knee pain subsided but back pain is still nagging. I have tried pain patches, tylenol, acupuncture (six weeks) and chinese herbs, along with heat therapy but nothing has really knocked down the pain.
Questions: Would one of the other virus suppressants give me relief? How can I find a doctor in our area who specializes in treating the virus and would it be a neurologist, infectious disease specialist, or ???.
My situation is that my girlfriend and I have gotten away from using condoms and after having sex the other night I woke up with horrible lower back, glute and back of leg pain. I know that this can be an early indicator of an outbrake coming on. My worry and wonder is if this pain was the next morning and I have still not noticed any other sign of an outbrake, could I have been contagious at the time of intercourse.
Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it. Anyone else have similar experience or advice? Thanks!
I have had chronic dizziness, brain fog, feelings if unreality, and severe ear pain- feels like burning aching sensation. All I have for a diagnosis is that one test out of 4 was positive for ebv- the IGG, suggesting a recent infection. I have felt theses symptoms for 3 months. Anyone have success with valtrex alleviating symptoms ?My Dr. prescribed it for 1 week. I also take desipramine (TCA) and have not had any relief from that yet either. It has been 2 weeks.

38 yr fem w/3 sex partners ever. Neg for HSV1/HSV2 in 2009 IGG, no sex since. 3/29 oral sex (performed on me) and a lot of genital/genital rubbing with a man who I later found out has HSV1 & HSV2. No intercourse,no sores, lesions but was dark.
Cold that night/few days later convinced I had herpes. Slight burning in perineum/headaches/fatigue/ muscle aches/shooting pain in left buttock. Been on internet for last 3 days! Burning perineum more w/sitting.Epsom salt baths helped.
I was diagnosed with NSU, I had a slightly red meatus, and was given antibiotics. The pain did not go away, I went back to the doc and I was diagnosed (confirmed) with a UTI.
I requested an HSV 1 & 2 IGG and IGM Herpeselect test at the 2 month mark. Both negative. (No numerical value on IGM, >0.9 on IGG)
The pain in the urethra continued despite many antibiotics.
I requested another HSV 1 & 2 IGG and IGM Elisa at the 6 month mark sharp.
HSV 1 IGG: Negative - Less than 2.

Since i've been in pain for 2 months, and on a pretty high dosage of valtrex, my doctor said that this may not be herpes. She actually said that i might have Vulvodynia, which is chronic pain of the vulva. She claims that it can be caused by herpes.
what do you think? have you heard of this link?

Sorry I have another followup question. My health is just really crazy and unpredictable. Since we spoke (I guess about 5 days ago) I have completely weened myself off of the Valtrex so I can retest in 3 months. Since then, the pain has intensified and has spread to my thigh and lower leg, and feet. It feels really achy and like shooting pains. The pain is still in my groin and buttocks as well.
Doesn't this mean I have herpes!?
Does Valtrex have to build up in your system for a few days to be effective against transmission or does it start working immediately? Do I have to take meds everyday to be completely effective? My partner lives out of state and I rarely see him.
my partner who i met has been on Valtrex for a couple of years and the pass year we had unprotected sex. I went and got tested and my blood work came back negative. She is ok with the results and angry that she allowed me to convince her and not using condoms. I just can't explained why we did it without condoms only that I love her and we are getting marry.
Now i stopped taking valtrex and i get a mild pain in armpits after i shave a week ago and had a lump on my right arm almost sure it is lymph node from what im reading in the internet. The lump is 1cm not big at all but it hurts. This was last week thursday, i applied warm water and stopped shaving and took a valtrex and a keflex, the next day the bump went down and the right armpit is so much better.
Perhaps I'm jumping the gun and should wait for the Western Blot results, but here's the basic story:

The story repeated for another two days , Valtrex helped for 9-10 hrs and then symptoms came back. When I take Valtrex 1 g twice daily I feel fine , when I don`t symptoms are back. What is it?! I don`t want to take Valtrex 1 g twice a day for rest of my life! That is so many side effects of this drug.I need help. I take valtrex 1 g twice daily for 5 days total now , I plan to do it for another 5 days and stop. I don`t know what will happen.Please respond to my question. Is it herpes ?
What is the possibility of being immune to Valtrex? Is there a possibility that after taking Valtrex daily that in a couple years it may no longer be effective?
Diagnosed with shingles Wednesday night - went to doctor same day symptoms started as they were significant. Started Valtrex. Have bumps on lower back near sciatic nerve on left side and on left thigh following nerve line. Entire thigh dull to touch but high pain (throbbing, etc). Pain on site at back. Also high pain, burning on left hip, stomach, behind knee. Friday morning noticed third patch of bumps on thigh (more inward) and an increase of bumps on first set of thigh bumps.
Stomach pain, mood changes, and for four months still having problems down below without breakouts, just pain, front and back, vagina and anus pain, I have had several people tell me Lysine is just as helpful as Valtrex and wondered if anyone has had these problems and has ever used Lysine for genital herpes.
