My situation is that my girlfriend and I have gotten away from using condoms and after having sex the other night I woke up with horrible lower back, glute and back of leg pain. I know that this can be an early indicator of an outbrake coming on. My worry and wonder is if this pain was the next morning and I have still not noticed any other sign of an outbrake, could I have been contagious at the time of intercourse.
Herpes absolutely causes low back pain, buttock pain and leg pain below the buttocks. I have had herpes since 1989 and I ALWAYS know when an outbreak is imminent because of these symptoms. Know your body and pay attention to the ailments that immediately precede an outbreak. Unfortunately it seems I know more about the virus than any of the doctors that have treated me do. And they don't seem interested in learning, only prescribing expensive Valtrex. SMH.
About Valtrex I can only give you my personal experience of it,I was on Acycilovar which worked well for me then for no reason at all my Doctor changed me over to Valtrex after a couple of months I had to go back and ask to be put back on the Acycilovar as the Valtrex didn't seem to be working for me I don't know anything about either drug or if they are essentially the same I just know Valtrex didn't work well for me.
Lately I have not had these sores but have pain in the buttocks and lower back is sore and painful with spasms and pain down the back of both legs. If I lie down and go to sleep,the pain is so excruciating it takes a long time to slowly get out of bed. Once I can get up the spasms slowly subside as I walk and move around.
I have been suffering with herpes very rarely for many years but recently I had severe back pain, severe pins and needles sensation and numbness in both feet. About two days after I started having my back symptoms I had two herpes lesions simultaneously on my buttocks.
In the past I have had some very minimal symptoms when the lesion began but it's never been debilitating to the point of having to be off of work for six weeks.

From time to time I try stopping the Valtrex for a few days and the virus seems to come back in the form of swollen, painful gums (it's not terrible pain but annoying, especially when brushing or flossing). Each time I stop Valtrex, it seems to take longer for the virus to reappear but it almost always reappears in the form of swollen and painful gums.
When I discontinued Valtrex, knee pain subsided but back pain is still nagging. I have tried pain patches, tylenol, acupuncture (six weeks) and chinese herbs, along with heat therapy but nothing has really knocked down the pain.
Questions: Would one of the other virus suppressants give me relief? How can I find a doctor in our area who specializes in treating the virus and would it be a neurologist, infectious disease specialist, or ???.
Anyways I get bad coldsore breakouts so i take Valtrex daily to prevent them. Well I had a rapid oraquick test today at 5 weeks and it was negative. But I was told that antivirals could delay seroconversion and that valtrex could delay HIV bit I don't know of that's true sinc it's only for herpes. So is my 5 week negative prety acurate even with valtrex? Thanks I am just really worrying bout this a lot.
Perhaps I'm jumping the gun and should wait for the Western Blot results, but here's the basic story:

Diagnosed with shingles Wednesday night - went to doctor same day symptoms started as they were significant. Started Valtrex. Have bumps on lower back near sciatic nerve on left side and on left thigh following nerve line. Entire thigh dull to touch but high pain (throbbing, etc). Pain on site at back. Also high pain, burning on left hip, stomach, behind knee. Friday morning noticed third patch of bumps on thigh (more inward) and an increase of bumps on first set of thigh bumps.
Also genital hsv1 rarely reoccurs and being on valtrex would certainly lower outbreaks even more.It would appear that your doctor is correct that its not herpes but without knowing for sure it would be best not to expose the baby during the birthing process. Im sure youll have the test results back before your time.
leg pain back pain, etc...I just found out that because of where my herpes is, on my lower back, I can indeed suffer long term nerve damage. Now, on suppressive therapy, I can't tell if my mild symptoms are pre-cursers to what would have been an outbreak, or just the nerve pain. I had cancer twenty years ago and do not have a spleen, but seem to fall into an immuno-compromised category that doesn't fit.
It burned and itched and I went back to the doctor and he prescribed me Valtrex and Cefdinir. Went away for a week and came back. Began with lips swelling again and then sat night into sunday it started oozing. Sunday at 7am i went to the hospital and was prescribed valtrex, prednisone, and oh gosh i'm blanking on the other antibiotic. It went away and a week later I got a cold. Then (first time this happened) I noticed a white blister on the inside of my lip.
Symptoms started after receiving unprotected oral sex which include stinging at the opening of my penis, tingeling sensation- redness and inflamation, and pain at the tip- no burning during urination ever- and never any open sores- at times it does look like there is a TINY dark red circular spot that appears but then goes away however the redness/ irritaion is constant.
Right now i have lesions and the pain shoots across both sides of the buttocks. It is creating sciatica down my legs. I also have a cutting sensation in the vagina at times and a feeling of something moving in the last 7 inches of my lower spine. The Valtrex will knock it out but it will return in a few wks. Very uncomfortable. Has anybody else experienced these symptoms of sciatica from herpes and pain inside vagine?
If I stop it for a week do I wait to see if symptoms persist? If not begin again, or ask my doctor for an alternative? If so what should I be asking for and are they as effective as Valtrex?

Since we spoke (I guess about 5 days ago) I have completely weened myself off of the Valtrex so I can retest in 3 months. Since then, the pain has intensified and has spread to my thigh and lower leg, and feet. It feels really achy and like shooting pains. The pain is still in my groin and buttocks as well.
Doesn't this mean I have herpes!? It seem that when i take the valtrex the pain subsides and when i don't the pain increases and spreads, so that means I must have herpes.

I have another set of questions. As you can see above, i've recently tested negative on my second set of IgG tests. I decided to go off of the valtrex for the next 3 months and then retake the test to make sure it's accurate, since I've heard the valtrex can impact the accuracy of the results...
So basically now it's been about 5 days since I've been off of the Valtrex completely. While I was on the Valtrex, the pain was there but basically numbed or gone at times.
About four months ago, I had a small outbreak on my lower lip, just right of center, along the bottom edge. It went away in a few hours because of the Valtrex, but since then I have had chronic pain in that spot. It hurts when I rub it with my fingernail. The painful area is small, but definitely noticeable.
My doctor just looked at the area and said "I don't see anything", and then dismissed the issue altogether.
After 6 months on suppressive therapy, I was having constant vaginal itching and redness. My OB changed my valtrex to 1 gm and had vaginal itching decrease but did not go away. I was prescribed a cream-triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% and it would help to relieve the itch, but it would come back a few days later. I have used the cream for 2 years off and on, until recently due to becoming pregnant. Is itching a side effect of the valtrex?
I've read some posts on the internet that someone with a healthy immune system is less likely to have outbreaks is there any truth to that? Should I take immune system boosters? I have HSV2 and have never officially had an outbreak but have neuralgia on the back of my leg. I started taking Valtrex a couple months after the leg pain continued and it went away. I'm just trying to make sure I am taking all the precautions on my part to avoid spreading and having any recurring symptoms.
I can hear it as well as feel it. I feel severe pressure and deep pain underneath the crunching in my lower back. This is a recent issue as I have not had time to Andreas my physician just yet. This problem is very concerning and alarming for me. Has anyone had similar problems, or perhaps know what this may be caused from? Please advise, thank you and God Bless.
Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it. Anyone else have similar experience or advice? Thanks!
I recently had a Bartholin cyst which I had remedied with a series of sitz baths but I have been having a sharp pain in my lower back, rectum and vaginal area. accompanyied with shooting pains under my buttocks and down that backs of my legs. I went in for an appointment with a Doctor that was not my regular physician he did a pelvic exam and a pap test.
Try stopping the valtrex for a month and see what happens. I myself don't tolerate valtrex - it gives me severe genital pain. Since it's hsv1 genitally it shouldn't be much of an issue.
Also go back to the gyn again and get retested for yeast and bacterial infections. It might not have cleared up with the first round of medicine.
ohsolucky - topical acyclovir is pretty much worthless for herpes. It's not recommended for genital herpes recurrences.
