Common Questions and Answers about Toprol xl tablets

toprol

Avatar m tn I have taken 50 mgs of toprol XL for 12-13 years. It is a very safe and a good medication in my opinion. The XL means that it has an Extended Life .. in other words one pill is supposed work for at least 24 hours i think... but anyway... I dont know why the doc would say just use it when your rate is fast.. if you took one a day ....your heart rate should stay pretty regular Id think.. but Im not a doctor... I dont really know about taking it occassionally... doesnt make alot of sense to me..

503607 tn?1275675179 Hi, I was diagnosed with an atrial flutter almost two weeks ago, I have also suffered from pvc's for 5yrs and one bout of a-fib 3/2008. I was put on Toprol xl 25mgs, today I am having alot of palpitations, not sure if they are the regular pvc's or atrial flutters? I am so confused. My dr told me if I have sustained pvc's I should up my does to 50mg toprol. My heart does not race its in the 60's. Even with my initial Atrial flutter my heart did not go over 90 beats a minute.
Avatar n tn My internist suggested that I cut my 40 mg Toprol xl tablets in half and take one half in the morning and half in the evening to alleviate the evening dizziness and morning tiredness. I have been taking half-doses twice a day for a couple of weeks and that seems to help. I am now scheduled for another test with a CHF specialist to evaluate my condition with potential to be placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant (due to my low ef and apparent declining heart strength).
Avatar n tn Are those of you with fatigue talking about Toprol or Toprol XL? Toprol is the same as lopressor and metoprolol. The XL type is a long-release version.
Avatar n tn When I was first started on Inderal in the early 80's, there were no generics available. Once the 20mg tablets became available in generic form, my doctor preferred on stay on the "regular" brand. I'm not sure it makes a difference, but it might be worth testing it out. Can you go back to the regular version for a month or so, to see if it works better. At one point I was taking the 80SR, but found it necesary to supplement with a 20mg tablet for breakthroughs.
Avatar n tn I HAVE BEEN TAKING TOPROL XL SINCE SEPTEMBER 1999. THE TABLETS ARE 50 MG. EACH. I STARTED OUT ON 25 MG. TWICE A DAY. BY AFTERNOON MY SYMPTONS WOULD RETURN . NOW I TAKE 150 MG. A DAY. THREE TABLETS TOTAL, A PILL AND A HALF, THEN ABOUT TEN TO TWELVE HOURS LATER ANOTHER PILL AND A HALF.
Avatar n tn I have taken Toprol xl 25 mg for about 5 years. My doctor switched me to metoprolol several months ago. When I filled my prescription this time, it was from a different mfg and I think I may be having problems with it as I just don't feel right. Could changing the mfg make a difference? ALSO, my doctor prescribed 50 mg to be cut in half for my prescribed 25 mg dose. Does cutting this tablet in half compromise the time release?
Avatar f tn I take 200 mg of toprol xl (metoprolo er), 100 morning, 100 night. My tables can be broken in half to make a 50 mg dose, which I have also used. I'd guess your 50 mg toprol xl can be split in half to give you a 25 mg tablet. I'm not suggesting what dose you should use, just saying I think you have a way to take 25 mg accurately if that's what is needed. I take the med to slow down my HR, driven by AFig. When in sinus I was taking 100 mg and had a rest HR of about 60.
Avatar n tn I was sent home within the next few hours, and prescribed daily tablets of toprol XL. Well, I took these beta blockers over the next week or so, but due to some chest pains and extreme fatigue I was taken off of them. Over the next few weeks I felt alright until once again another episode struck, and I was hospitalized again. Toprol XL solved the problem, but due to past issues I once again didn't take it on a daily basis.
Avatar n tn Don't be alarmed, they only let me play about 1/4 to 1/2 of the game, and I found an over-48 league that I fit into quite well. When I was taking half-tablets of Toprol XL I felt as you did. BPM seemed to top off at about 160, resting BPM went to about 35-45 (pretty low, but asymptomatic, as my normal resting BPM is about 45-50). I would also get winded easily after sprinting...
492869 tn?1285022533 I just took Tylenol, Trileptal, Zofran, Toprol XL, Ritalin, Guaifensin, and a Multivitamin. Hopefully I will keep these down, because a good majority of them cannot be repeated again tonight no matter where they end up. I haven't used my oxygen in a couple of hours now... If I can go a couple more hours without vomiting I will turn it on again, but for now I will keep everything as it is. I'm sucking on Pedialyte pops at the moment. Three more, and I will try to get some sleep.
Avatar f tn (I took nothing for it until 2 years ago) I just started taking toprol XL 2 years ago. I'm now 46. I have an appt w/a cardiologist on the 23rd. I do have a small tumor on my adrenal gland. my doc thought that was the problem but the endocrinologist I went to said the tumor is "nonfunctioning" and he said it was just a "nodule" .
Avatar f tn I just realized last night that the prescription I received as of April 1st was NOT generic Toprol XL (long acting beta blocker) but generic Lopressor (short acting beta blocker). It was switched by my general practitioner bc of a pill shortage, WITHOUT my knowledge. Neither the doctor nor pharmacist told me of any switch. So possibly this has to do with the breakthrough episodes. Instead of lasting 24 hrs, the generic Lopressor only last 10-12. Completely unbelievable!
Avatar n tn I contacted my cardiologist because I had a couple episodes where it felt like my heart was fluttering. I have been on Toprol XL for a little over a year (25mg) due to having a afib attack last memorial day and having to be converted. I have been fine until lately when last Monday my BP shot up to 170/90. She had me do a holter study for 2 days to see what was happening. She told me that my heart rate was running too high and that I had a 30 second episode of atrial flutter.
899454 tn?1295587538 Hi it is so nice to meet you, I have had a long road of being put on Beta Blocker or Toprol XL for a high heart rate one day it went up to 120 but looking back I realize it was in my opinion my thyroid it was out of whack and I was suffering from Adrenal Fatigue, I was on Toprol XL for nearly 4 years and the drug went south on me the side effects became insane and was dropping my blood pressure constantly... So I never had High Blood Pressure before the meds. So I cut it down for 6 weeks or so.
Avatar n tn My husband and I walk every morning-- brisk walking for 2 miles and I also go to a gym 3 times a week to lose 30 lbs to see if this will help. I take 1 tablet of 25mg Toprol-XL per day for high blood pressure which started about the same time as the palpitations. I take 10mg of Lipitor for high cholesterol. I take 2 tablets of magnesium per day that is supposed to control the palpitations-- but has not so I'm going to stop taking them when I finish the bottle.
Avatar n tn My doctor just prescribed me Toprol for PVCs. I have low blood pressure, so I'm worried that taking a beta blocker will make it even lower. Typically, my BP is about 94/56. Have you been on a beta blocker for long? Do you notice a decrease in your BP? Do you experience side effects with beta blockers? Thanks.
Avatar m tn Toprol XL (Beta blocker) Perindopril (ACE inhibitor) Clopidogrel + Aspirin Isosorbide Mononitrate Lipitor I do not have angina with normal activity like walking slowly for about 45 minutes. As part of a routine exam, I had an angiogram recently which shows the following findings: LMCA - Normal LAD - Type III vessel. 70 % Stenosis tapering to 90 %. Mid segment irregularities D1 - Has 80 % ostial stenosis LCX - Non-dominant.
Avatar n tn My 24 hr monitor showed that I was getting 341 of them. I am on Toprol XL 50mg and it has helped some, but not enough. I wonder if I should get my dose increased. I hate to increase it, but if it helps I guess it would be worth it.
Avatar n tn Trade name (generic name) Acebutolol (Sectral) Atenolol (Tenormin) Metoprolol (Lopressor, Lopressor LA, Toprol XL) Nadolol (Corgard) Timolol (Blocadren) Beta blockers are also used to treat hypertension therefore reducing your BP. So, with use you will notice a drop in BP. I suffer from SVT (Afib) you can read my history under "trying to decide" I am an RN as well, sometimes I wish I weren't...because I know too much :) Sometimes a good thing and sometimes not so good.
Avatar m tn I am a 34 year old male, i am overweight and on Toprol XL, Synthroid for Hypothyroid condition, Zoloft, Benzapril, and take a baby aspirin each day. For the last couple of weeks I have noticed that I have been having these episodes where my heart will take long and hard beats, it almost feels as though my heart is gurgling at the end of each beat.

687614 tn?1244201579 Hi, saw your email too. My experience with BB is limited to Toprol XL and Metoprolol SL (SL, XL, SR...all the same, slow to dissipate in the system - may support once in 24 hour dose), so I've used both the trademark and generic forms. They seem to be the same, lower HR and BP. When on 100 mg I was in a cardio rehabilitation program follow open heart surgery to repair the mitral valve. During the rehabilitation exercise I was on a 3-point EKG and a nurse checked my BP every 5-10 minutes.
Avatar f tn Leslie613, I am also on a Beta Blocker and an SSRI for a similar diagnosis. I take Toprol XL, and Prozac (also 5mg). It really helped to prevent the sudden drops in blood pressure, but my blood pressure was still very low. I now use Ritalin to kind of balance that effect. I was on Atenolol in the past as well, but not in combination with Prozac. I am curious to know how this cocktail works out for you. I wish you luck!
9043033 tn?1401350253 com/major-recall-of-metoprolol-er-tablets/article/347174/ Wockhardt announced a recall of 109,744 bottles of Metoprolol Succinate Extended-Release 50mg Tablets, the generic version of AstraZeneca's Toprol XL. This recall was initiated due to a dissolution test failure observed at the nine month time point. Dissolution tests verify the time taken for the active ingredient to release into the body, and help predict how the drug performs inside the body.
1558471 tn?1331225635 Verapamil only worked for 2 weeks and then they all came back. I am currently taking cardizem xl 240mg. I've only been on it 2 weeks. I have not had any "fast heartbeating" episodes, but it hasn't significantly reduced the number of PAC and PVC. (I feel most of them). My cardiologist believes he can ablate the PVCs but not the PAC nor the place that triggered the fast heat beat.
183202 tn?1219857259 Hello Ryan. Thank you for all of your help! You have no idea how appreciative I am with all of the assistance you have given me. I DO have one other question, though. Do you suspect I could possibly be suffering from Lyme Disease or some other TBD (tick borne disease)??
612551 tn?1450025775 My cardiologist told me that patent for Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate) is about to expire, or has already do so, and the price will drop dramatically. He also mentioned that the patent on Lipitor is about the expire, and pharmicutical companies are licking their chops for that one. I'm on Simvastatin, and he plans to switch me as soon as the price drops on Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium). as he claims it's a much better drug. So, no, you're not alone.
Avatar n tn The stress test showed nothing either except fast heart rate (180 bpm at 5 minutes). Doctor put me on 25 mg of Toprol XL to slow heart rate. I have a history of fast heart rate. Sometimes when I roll over it clicks on and beats over 220 bpm. I can always bring it back to normal by taking deep breaths and holding it. Twice my heart went into a quivering or fluttering action which really scared me. Nothing I did would make it go back in. It went in by itself.
