Toprol xl split

Common Questions and Answers about Toprol xl split

Avatar n tn I was released from the hospital yesterday after a two day bout of atrial tachycardia and off and on atrial fib. My Toprol XL was increased from 100mg to 150 mg. 100 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night. I have low blood pressure (90/60) and I'm afraid that taking the extra 50 mg at night will drop my blood pressure too low and I could die in my sleep from my bp bottoming out? Is this an unreasonable fear?

503607 tn?1275675179 Hi, I was diagnosed with an atrial flutter almost two weeks ago, I have also suffered from pvc's for 5yrs and one bout of a-fib 3/2008. I was put on Toprol xl 25mgs, today I am having alot of palpitations, not sure if they are the regular pvc's or atrial flutters? I am so confused. My dr told me if I have sustained pvc's I should up my does to 50mg toprol. My heart does not race its in the 60's. Even with my initial Atrial flutter my heart did not go over 90 beats a minute.
687614 tn?1244201579 I have been having problems with sinus tachycardia, atrial tachycardia and SVT at night. They put me on 100 mg of toprol XL. Started out as one dose 100 mg in the morning I had been taking it this way for about 3 weeks. It didn't hold throughout the night and into the next morning. I was tachy at night before bed and upon waking. So they divided the dose into two 50 mg in morning and 50 mg in evening. I have been taking it this way for about 4 days now.
Avatar m tn When I made that same switch a few years ago, I went from 100mg Toprol XL once a day to 100mg metoprolol succinate once a day. Neither my doctor nor my pharmacist ever suggested that I would need to split the dose. My understanding is that metoprolol succinate is an extended release formuation that substitutes directly for Toprol XL. But ask your doc or a pharmacist to make sure. I'm off of the drug entirely now, so I don't worry with it anymore.
201324 tn?1191089878 I am taking 50mg Toprol XL...along with coumadin, for an a-fib event last week. I just switched taking the toprol from morning to the evening to ward off side effects. They are still horrible! Don't feel good, foggy, can't function! How can I live like this?? How has anyone else fared on this stuff? Please share! makes me want to quit taking it!
Avatar f tn Do not split, crush or chew the tablet. metronidazole Metoprolol should be taken with food or just after a meal. A Toprol XL tablet can be divided in half if your doctor has told you to do so. The half tablet should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing. Chewing or crushing the pill could cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Avatar n tn Re: cutting down on Toprol dosages: If you can monitor your BP, your doctor may approve reduced dosages. A self-reading cuff could be a very good investment. I recently experienced fatigue and a sense of "disconnectedness" from taking 50mg of Toprol XL daily. The pills are scored and can be split, so I tried taking a half-pill and found that my BP readings (morning and evening) were not significantly affected, but the light-headedness went away and my fatigue decreased.
Avatar f tn My tables can be broken in half to make a 50 mg dose, which I have also used. I'd guess your 50 mg toprol xl can be split in half to give you a 25 mg tablet. I'm not suggesting what dose you should use, just saying I think you have a way to take 25 mg accurately if that's what is needed. I take the med to slow down my HR, driven by AFig. When in sinus I was taking 100 mg and had a rest HR of about 60.
Avatar n tn I have taken Toprol xl 25 mg for about 5 years. My doctor switched me to metoprolol several months ago. When I filled my prescription this time, it was from a different mfg and I think I may be having problems with it as I just don't feel right. Could changing the mfg make a difference? ALSO, my doctor prescribed 50 mg to be cut in half for my prescribed 25 mg dose. Does cutting this tablet in half compromise the time release?
Avatar n tn My PCP said there's nothing to worry about. Totally harmless. My PCP put me on generic 25mg Toprol XL and my PVCs got worse by the 4th day, so they decided to increase the Toprol XL to 50mg and after a day I started getting bad headaches, chest pains and my PVCs were up to 30 or so now a day. So my PCP told me to stop taking Toprol right away. I only took it for a week. He put me on Ativan for my anxiety which is through the roof.
1054923 tn?1258523671 The new symptom also was the Tachycardia that followed, at times 130 which for me at 35/42 was very fast and scary. Hence the new beating machine. My doctor subscribed Toprol XL/25 once a day. NO WAY I said, no medication for me. I went Home from the hospital on Friday and Sunday afternoon I was right back in the ER with a speeding HB where my Cardiologist happened to be on duty.......Well little will you take your pill; he said smiling? I did.
Avatar f tn 92 bpm is not fast at all, if you feel better on the atenolol you might ask your doctor to switch you back. Toprol XL is longer acting, but if you can take the atenolol 25mg twice daily that might do the trick, again always check with doctor, explain your feelings as only you know how you feel and what you can tolerate , no one else.
Avatar f tn My new family dr. finally is allowing me to switch from Toprol XL to acebutolol to see if it helps my PVC's/PACs. I have wanted to do this for some time. I was on 50 mg of Toprol, and he put me on 200 mg of Acebutolol. I feel like someone "kicked my behind" LOL. I am so tired, shaky -- just don't feel right. It's only been two days, so I'm sure it will just take time for my body to adjust.
Avatar n tn I contacted my cardiologist because I had a couple episodes where it felt like my heart was fluttering. I have been on Toprol XL for a little over a year (25mg) due to having a afib attack last memorial day and having to be converted. I have been fine until lately when last Monday my BP shot up to 170/90. She had me do a holter study for 2 days to see what was happening. She told me that my heart rate was running too high and that I had a 30 second episode of atrial flutter.
Avatar f tn If haven't investigated if Metoprolol Succinate aka. Toprol XL is available as a generic form or not. I know my insurance provider considers Toprol XL as a higher "tier" drug, and passes the expense on to the insured.
Avatar m tn Your dosage is rather low and you hadn't taken it for very long so your doctor is probably correct in stopping it cold turkey in your case. I took Toprol XL 25mg for more than 3 years and weened myself over a period of two weeks. I did not have the side effects that you are complaining about, but shortness of breath and terrible night sweats - I am glad, I got rid of it.
Avatar f tn It probably depends on your situation and the severity of your condition. I do not have a very severe condition, and I find that a little bit of TOPROL XL goes a long way without producing much of a side effect. I take much less than the standard minimum dose however.
443862 tn?1238003039 I actually was found to benefit from Toprol XL (also called Metoprolol Succinate ER). For me, the combo. of my Toprol and my benzo (Ativan/Lorazepam) have proven highly effective in my treatment for my panic disorder and panic attacks. I have never heard of it causing/increasing anxiety....most either get some relief, a lot of relief, or no relief from it for heart problems and panic attacks. I will look into this for you if you want, as to why it is causing your anxiety and panic.
Avatar f tn I had a bad episode and ended up in the hospital...had cardiac cath and it came back good. Dr. put me on toprol xl 25 mg twice a day....had echo the next week and showed normal.
Avatar m tn I am a 34 year old male, i am overweight and on Toprol XL, Synthroid for Hypothyroid condition, Zoloft, Benzapril, and take a baby aspirin each day. For the last couple of weeks I have noticed that I have been having these episodes where my heart will take long and hard beats, it almost feels as though my heart is gurgling at the end of each beat.
687614 tn?1244201579 Hi, saw your email too. My experience with BB is limited to Toprol XL and Metoprolol SL (SL, XL, SR...all the same, slow to dissipate in the system - may support once in 24 hour dose), so I've used both the trademark and generic forms. They seem to be the same, lower HR and BP. When on 100 mg I was in a cardio rehabilitation program follow open heart surgery to repair the mitral valve. During the rehabilitation exercise I was on a 3-point EKG and a nurse checked my BP every 5-10 minutes.
1558471 tn?1331225635 The Toprol 100mg while effective caused too may side effects. Toprol at 50mg still caused the nasty side effects but didn't help the PAC/PVC/SVT. I wish I could try your idea but I can't with Toprol. Thanks though. Has any one tried splitting the Cardizem 240mg? It is not working(after 2 weeks) except for SVT (which is a blessing). Mainly I would like to know if anyone has a succesfull ablation for their PACs. While benign, I have over 10% of my heart beats between them and PVC. My dr.
183202 tn?1219857259 Hello Ryan. Thank you for all of your help! You have no idea how appreciative I am with all of the assistance you have given me. I DO have one other question, though. Do you suspect I could possibly be suffering from Lyme Disease or some other TBD (tick borne disease)??
Avatar n tn This is my 4th day on Toprol XL 12.5 mg in the am. The MD said 25 mg per day but I want to get use to it for a week or two. He said it can effect my asthma. If no problems I will increase to the 25 mg. I haven't noticed any changes in my palpitations, good or bad, but I'm hoping it will help. I started haveing them daily about 4 - 6 weeks ago. They are driving me crazy. I am also seeing a shrink, 7th visit today.
Avatar n tn I guess my years of hard training and borderline bp brought this on. I left the cardio yesterday and she gave me toprol xl (which im scared to start taking) and told me no lifting at all until i get the ct scan (thats if the insurance approves it) if it is indeed 4.0 im not allowed to lift ever again. This is devastating on me for many reasons, one is that lifting has always been a sort of therapy for me as well as an excellent stress outlet.
Avatar n tn i went to office she put me on toprol-xl and that brought my heart rate down from 96 to 62 So this is day two of no thyroid meds at all LOL tomorrow i start synthroid again.. did i mention my tsh fell from 1 to 10 in four months. I've been on synthroid my whole adult life. I'm 40 and have been on it since 18 , 10 years on 150mg To be fair I've had panic attacks off and on since oh 1995. but this seemed worse with armour. I also had radio active iodine at 18 so hypo was induced by ral.
Avatar n tn How about toprol xl 50mg..can you quit that cold turkey? I been on it for a week following 5 weeks of Inderol 80....and I am real dizzy and have more pvc's not less........
Avatar m tn We tried an ablation but they couldn't induce the arrhythmia (in my opinion sedated me WAY too much...I was O.U.T.). I have been on Toprol XL, Calcium blockers and am on my 3rd level of Flecainide. As I type, I sit with just as many symptoms as before. Very frustrating for sure. I think there is a definite link to the hysterectomy but noone seems to draw the same conclusion. Gee, I don't know though. I was perfectly fine, had the surgery and all of a sudden these symptoms.
1811056 tn?1316646764 they took me off 50 mg toprol xl 2x a day.. but don't have any problems with the Toprol but this bisprolol is making me nuts!!!!
