the high dose is 200mg top end. for toprol xl - dont know how anyone can take it at that dose ! Doctors give a beta blocker for palpatations in most cases. however some
give ccb's like verapamil as they too can control palps.
I myself am doing a study on palpaitions - causes and how to control them.
and or stop them totaly! with or without medications.

I take 200 mg of toprol xl (metoprolo er), 100 morning, 100 night. My tables can be broken in half to make a 50 mg dose, which I have also used. I'd guess your 50 mg toprol xl can be split in half to give you a 25 mg tablet. I'm not suggesting what dose you should use, just saying I think you have a way to take 25 mg accurately if that's what is needed.
I take the med to slow down my HR, driven by AFig. When in sinus I was taking 100 mg and had a rest HR of about 60.

a long while ago (years) bbc news reported the u.k medical asso , had found beta blockers caused cholesterol to build up in most people who took it. so they limited the use of beta blockers - they also reported that due to adverse side effects , beta blockers would be in limited useage in the u.k.
I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.

I can't answer your question about Sotalol, but I can say I have extensive experience with Toprol XL. Only input, 25 mg is a very light dose in my experience. I'd expect you to have very few side effects (low blood pressure, dizzy) for such a low dose. What are you trying to treat, fast pulse?
Although it doesn't make much sense scientifically, some patients don't tolerate certain formulation as well as others. Sometimes, it is not so much the actual drug but the makeup of the pill (other components such as binders, etc) that some patients may not tolerate well. As far as splitting the pill, it is not a problem with metopolol. But there are some pills that shouldn't be split. Consider going back to the original torpol XL.
I am wondering if you are uneasy about taking digoxin. If so, I would ask you cardio if you can get by with just the TOPROL XL. Digoxin, xanax, toprol xl, and lisinoprol seems like a lot of stuff to be taking.

I'm a 60 year old, who, over 7 years has lost 60 lbs, and with the help of meds reduced my cholesterol, and high blood pressure. All my labs are excellent, including testosterone, potassium and magnesium. Nothing out of range. Over time, as my weight has decreased, the meds have come down. New doctor has taken me off 100mg Amiodarone and replaced with 25mg toprol XL. I am experiencing dizziness, extreme sensitivity to heat and sunlight, confussion...I have waited a week thinking the side effects would subside. Internet research has led me to believe that the amiodarone can stay in my system for up to ninety days...or is it the beta blocker I am having a bad reactiont to??? Did the amiodarone damage my eyes? My vision has declined substantially over the past two years.
My pharmacacy switched my "Toprol XL 50 mg" to a Generic one called "Metoprolol Succinate ER 50 mg" (manufactured by Sandoz) in December 2007. I have been on some form of Beta Blockers for years and I thought nothing of it. Within a week I was at my eye doctor because my left eye went from 20/20 to 20/60 and was so blurry that I felt like I had suntan lotion or something in it. Since then I have been to so many doctors because things just kept getting worse.
The Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate) tablet should not be cut in half. Doing so defeats it's time release properties. If you want to mess with dosages (and I don't think you should), the generic Metoprolol Tartrate (referred to as just Metoprolol) can be cut in half without a problem. I take an odd, 75mg. Per day; 50mg at dinner, and 25mg (half a pill) upon rising. Think of your dose level as a "starting dose level".
I keep on getting a sinus infection and I am so depressed and feel despondent and hopeless. Can all of this be tied to the Toprol XL. I have read on other sites comments posted by others that desperate to get off this medication. Please give me a glimmer of hope and light because I don't know where to turn to start feeling good again.
Toprol XL is a slow release medication designed to deliver dose over 24 hour time period and it takes a week or so for the blood level to stabilize to achieve effect. It shouldn't make any difference when you take it as long as it is the same time each day. Have you discussed this problem with your doctor..perhaps a lower dosage or try another beta blocker. I take 100 mg/day and don't notice any side effects, but drug response is variable.
I think people could be really suffering out there like I was and they really need to be put back on the TOPROL XL brand. My medical bills just since Dec 07 are 6 inches thick and I'm sure my insurance company won't be happy to hear that it was all because they tried to save money and make me take the generic.
