Again, my point was that not very many doctors will prescribe Topamax, "solely" for weight loss; it's usually prescribed for something else and weight loss is a "beneficial" side effect, which was the intent when it was prescribed for me...
I don't have headaches... I prescribed Topamax for peripheral neuropathy in my feet. My neurologist has put me on gabapentin, but one of the main side effects of that is weight gain and I gained like there was no tomorrow.
I was put on Topamax in 2006 For Migraines/Stress Headaches. I lost my Mother,Father,Husband all within a 16 month period. But migraines also run in the family. I was also type 2 Diabetic sometime my sugar was so high it wouldn't register on my meter. But taking the Topamax starting at 200mg at night then going to 400mg . Put my migraines under control . For a short time.
You will find varying opinions on Topamax. Some people think it's absolute poision. There are side effects which can include the numbness/tingling, weight loss (not such a bad one LOL), and some say they experience a "foggy" brain. For me, the side effects weren't bothersome enough to quit. The Topa did seem to help in the beginning (I was taking it for chronic migraine) but after about 2 years, I felt like it wasn't quite doing the job so I recently got off.
old female also with a LONG migraine history and I have fibromyalgia. I had to go off the Topamax (the weight loss was great, but the side effects turned me into a depressed zombie). Now I'm on Lyrica, it's not yet approved for migraines but the testing is very promising, and I have had very few headaches in the last 2 months since I switched and those have been mild. I hope and think that probably your symptoms are related to the Topamax also.
I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches. I have almost come to the point where I just have to accept them as part of my life. I really would like this med to work. Info/suggestions/ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated..
Does any one taking topamax for migraines have the problem of memory loss? Especially word loss when speaking or writing? I know this drug is nicknamed stupamax for a reason. It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...
I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
In Nov my TSH level was .44 but due to weight loss she dropped my dosage from 125mcg to 100mcg, retested in 6 weeks, my TSH level was 5.90, so she upped my dosage to 112mcg, but after two weeks on it i requested my dosage be put back to 125mcg and to keep my TSH level at 1.0 or lower. To my astonishment she agreed. I will get retested again in 4 weeks. (I had a TT 14 yrs ago). I get tested everytime I tell them my symptoms.
I have been on Geodon since January 2, 2005 and have had a HORRIFIC experience! I gained 40 pounds in six months, need to wear glasses because of my blurry vision, foggy thoughts, bad short-term memory, extreme dry mouth, body spasms, facial tics, grinding teeth, palpitations, slurred speech, and extreme nausea. I have been to many doctors over the years and they all say that these side effects had nothing to do with my medication.
Hi...this is not really all that new, and it is the generic of TOPAMAX...this can take 2 weeks to adjust to....so u may feel extremely tired and off balance with this....
I did lose weight, and not sure how it works, but I gained it all back and I am still on the med....so it is not a weight loss miracle.
I have noticed a change in taste as well as smells...so I know that did affect what I eat....
Good luck and again be advised most do need an adjustment period to this med.
I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss? I currently take Maxalt for headaches only as needed so the Topamax was only used as an anti-seizure med. Please let me know so that I can discuss this with my neurologist about adding Topamax back into my daily routine. Thank you, any help you could give would be wonderful.
I was on Topamax for a while and I did lose weight. I have not lost weight on anything else, and since they took me off I have gained like 30 lbs over just a few years. I had to go off of Topamax and put on another med because I was high as a kite on it. Almost hallucinating - looking at the ground and seeing what looked like a sinking quicksand hole, etc. And the side effects did not go away over a couple months of trying so I had to go on something else.
I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.
