Topamax dosage and weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax dosage and weight loss

topamax

Avatar n tn Again, my point was that not very many doctors will prescribe Topamax, "solely" for weight loss; it's usually prescribed for something else and weight loss is a "beneficial" side effect, which was the intent when it was prescribed for me... I don't have headaches... I prescribed Topamax for peripheral neuropathy in my feet. My neurologist has put me on gabapentin, but one of the main side effects of that is weight gain and I gained like there was no tomorrow.
Avatar f tn You will find varying opinions on Topamax. Some people think it's absolute poision. There are side effects which can include the numbness/tingling, weight loss (not such a bad one LOL), and some say they experience a "foggy" brain. For me, the side effects weren't bothersome enough to quit. The Topa did seem to help in the beginning (I was taking it for chronic migraine) but after about 2 years, I felt like it wasn't quite doing the job so I recently got off.
1448748 tn?1312956208 My question is about Topomax, I recently gained quite a bit of weight even through proper diet and excersize. I know that a possible side effect of this drug is weight loss, so that would be a plus and that is why I am thinking about this drug in particular over some of the other headache medicines. Is Topamax a good option for people with Chiari type headaches, and do my headaches seem the typical chiari headache? Anyone have success with this?
614508 tn?1265281722 My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks. Other meds: Lithium, Zoloft, Ativan. Any advise would be welcome.
Avatar f tn Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...sometimes I know the word to use but can not even think of the letters to look it up so I end up using a different word in it's place...very frustrating. Speaking is another story. Sometimes it just isn't worth it to talk at all. Can any one relate to these symptoms? or shall I see my neurologist??
Avatar f tn ve taken Depakote before, but stopped because of weight gain and hair loss. I am 22 years old. Just about 2 days ago I started noticing some Topamax side effects... Like "i can't find the right words to say" or "finish my sentences" Have you ever experienced this? and do these side effects go away?
Avatar f tn I definitely lost weight and I am little to begin with. Recently I went off of Topamax and have gained weight back for sure :( So the weight loss is one of the better side effects LOL. The biggest side effect for me was the hands and feet (and sometimes lips) tingling. Not all the time but especially in the beginning. Numbness too. They weren't bothersome enough for me to stop taking it, though. I hope it works for you.
Avatar m tn Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back. I am not sure those things work, this is just my theory on my limited research and there may be much larger issues at play. However, water and milk thistle can't hurt...right?
1781720 tn?1314842836 Usual side effects of topamax may include fatigue, impaired concentration, dizziness, and paresthesias (tingling, numbness, pins and needles sensation). Kidney stones, as mentioned by Eddie and sometimes weight loss are often observed with continued treatment. Dosage reduction is often done by your doctor to help with these side effects. Take care and regards.
633143 tn?1262133535 I also had this kind of crazy weight loss on Topamax. For me, it turned out to be the combination of the dosage of Topamax and other medications that made the weight loss so severe. I noticed that once I stopped taking Wellbutrin and as my headaches improved I lowered my dose of Topamax, the weight loss eased off and it took about 6 months to get back to my usual weight. Now I am back watching what I eat, instead of eating everything in site and losing weight!
Avatar f tn I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.
Avatar f tn old female also with a LONG migraine history and I have fibromyalgia. I had to go off the Topamax (the weight loss was great, but the side effects turned me into a depressed zombie). Now I'm on Lyrica, it's not yet approved for migraines but the testing is very promising, and I have had very few headaches in the last 2 months since I switched and those have been mild. I hope and think that probably your symptoms are related to the Topamax also.
1041303 tn?1421387341 I also experienced the odd taste in soda, almost as if it burned my mouth to drink it. I had weight loss and also It is known to messes with birth control. If this medicine doesn't work for you the next one my doctor refered to me was Nortriptyline (Spelling?) I HIGHLY recommend not trying it! I experienced night terrors and serious depression. Also depakote (Spelling?) was another kind I tried and it made me depressed as well and made me feel as thought I was living in a fog.
1549189 tn?1293935668 s side effects are commonly confused with weight loss. Side effects are loss of appetite, however this may affect people in different ways. And being that this is just a side effect of the drug, and not the purpose of the drug itself, it does not mean that it will neccessarily happen. Sometimes the brain is so powerful that it can override the drugs side affects of appetite suppression. Truthfully, some people happen to lose weight while on the drug, some people don't.
Avatar n tn This is not healthy either physically nor mentally. Topamax is not a miracle weight loss drug, and you should not be considering it merely because you have heard of this side effect. Your main concern should be getting the headaches/ADD or other disorder under control and then work on the secondary issues - i.e. weight control.
Avatar f tn I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches. I have almost come to the point where I just have to accept them as part of my life. I really would like this med to work. Info/suggestions/ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated..
Avatar n tn I started taking Topamax 6 months ago and started noticing hair loss the past couple of months.I looked up side effects for all my meds and found Topamax lists hair loss as a side effect so I have stopped taking it. Hair loss can also be due to stress, I didn't notice any hair loss until I had been on the Topamax for a while so I'm almost certain it was the Topamax. Good luck to you.
739988 tn?1386672969 However one lady who had this problem asked her pdoc and he advised selenium and zinc for med induced hair loss when she started losing hair (she thought Lamictal was the culprit but could not be sure) her hair loss stopped falling immediately. She took 200mcg of selenium (not mg) and 50 mg of zinc a day.
Avatar n tn I started out on 2-25mg topamax a day and was losing weight my dr put me on just 1-50mg now and am gaining weight like crazy,is there a reason for this change that I should be aware or have checked
Avatar f tn I have read about all this wonderful weight loss. If anything I have gained. Could these 2 medicines together be holding me back from losing> I would like to go off of the sertraline.
284078 tn?1282616698 Fortunately, God was on her side because she was smart enough to stop the Topamax and go to the emergency room before she developed an attack of acute narrow angle glaucoma (symptoms severe eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, almost complete vision loss.) Her ocular pressure was actually only slightly elevated and with cessation of the Topamax, her pressure returned to normal in a day, while it took over a week for her vison to return to normal.
Avatar f tn In Nov my TSH level was .44 but due to weight loss she dropped my dosage from 125mcg to 100mcg, retested in 6 weeks, my TSH level was 5.90, so she upped my dosage to 112mcg, but after two weeks on it i requested my dosage be put back to 125mcg and to keep my TSH level at 1.0 or lower. To my astonishment she agreed. I will get retested again in 4 weeks. (I had a TT 14 yrs ago). I get tested everytime I tell them my symptoms.
Avatar f tn Now that I have stopped taking Geodon, I would like to know if anyone out there has been through the same experience with weight gain AND if weight loss is a side effect of coming off of Geodon? If not, is it easier to lose weight once you are off of the medication? I have my mind back and now I want my body back! Hope to hear some good news!
Avatar f tn and was able to loose some weight (though I was not overweight at that time). I began eating more to try to gain weight. The topamax did level off and the weight began to pile on (other anti-seizure meds were added that could cause weight gain). I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss?
