Hi, I am currently on an increasing dosage of topamax for suspected seizures - although the seizures are very mild and random. I am not the type of person who likes to take medication and I have had a read on a couple of different forums about topamax and there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding the drug with some pretty scary side effects.
Can anyone enlighten me with some success stories??

Your experience is almost identical to mine. My 2 y/o currently takes Topamax for partial seizures and is experiencing extreme irritability, 45 min long tantrums, speech delays, violent behavior, etc. I would just like to know how your child is doing now? Was he diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

My doctor put me on topamax for migraines. She didn't have samples in the office, so she just gave me a perscription for 100 mg pills and said it wouldn't be a problem to start at that dosage. I've been taking this dosage for 7 days, and think it's too much. Is it too late to go back and start taking 25 mg the 1st week, 50 the 2nd, 75, and then 100 the 4th week (I looked up how it SHOULD be taken on the medical site).
I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
I have found that with myself, Topamax works well with controlling the seizures, and has much less effect on liver functions, making it a much safer drug for me. I would be intersted to know what 3 meds he is on for seizures, any severity of liver damage so far by hep c, and how old he is. As always, consulting with his neurologist and his GI in conjunction is the safest bet. As far as websites for the two, I have not found any.
I will let you know. I am on Lyrica and have been for about a year. I am 47 and also been on Topamax for my seizures as well. Too many other AEDs over the past 5 yrs to name . Did the Lyrica cause my "spot" on my MRI that wasn't there on my last mammogram in JUne of last year? Who knows? We will see what my biopsy reveals next Wed.
My daughter is 11 and has scarring in her left temporal lobe and was started on Topamax a year and a half ago. She had had a grand mal seizure, but her main seizures consisted of a funny feeling in her stomach and dizziness. The doctor she was seeing said once she was seizure free for 2 years (she has been seizure free a year and half) she would recommend a second opinion but would like to try taking her off her Topamax. Her doctor has since left the practice and on the last appt.
I am no specialist on Topamax but I do know the use it for many things including migraines. The more serious danger maybe not taking it if you have Epilepsy. In August I was on Topamax for migrianes and went off of it because I didn't think it helped that much. Then I had what we believe was a seizure and now I have been diagnosed also with Epilepsy. My EEG was normal also but that is not uncommon, it is hard to catch a seizure on the EEG especially if you do not sleep during the EEG.
Thank you. Neuro said it was acting as a toxic in my system and changed meds. I have tried ambien, lunesta and adavan all to no success. My neuro said hospital if I dont sleep soon. What do you think hospital will do?? thank you.
Recently, she has lost vision in her right eye during the headache and is now having seizure-like symptoms. She has experienced 1 - 2 seizures daily for 1 week. She has had a headache for approx 2 weeks. She feels the "seizure" coming on because it is preceded by a unusual taste in her mouth, unusual mental & stomach feelings. Her MD is not sure she is having seizures & ordered an MRI & EEG, which we are waiting on results from.
He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Migraines continue, some tingling in hands and feet, which is likely the topamax. However, today he had a migraine (been on topamax just over three weeks). Once it wore off I took him to school. Got a call form the nurse about an hour later saying that he blanked on his math test, couldn't remember anything they worked on in the last week or so.
The EEG report suggested to consider complex partial seizures. I was placed on Topamax to which I had a bad reaction and was taken off after two weeks. I am now on Trileptal for now to see how my body tolerates that. WHatI need to know is if there are any other tests that can be run to confirm if in fact those spikes or discharges are complex partial seizures. The only physical manifestion I presented with was a tremor in my right arm.
