Topamax for migraines dosage

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for migraines dosage

topamax

Avatar f tn My doctor put me on topamax for migraines. She didn't have samples in the office, so she just gave me a perscription for 100 mg pills and said it wouldn't be a problem to start at that dosage. I've been taking this dosage for 7 days, and think it's too much. Is it too late to go back and start taking 25 mg the 1st week, 50 the 2nd, 75, and then 100 the 4th week (I looked up how it SHOULD be taken on the medical site).
Avatar f tn I have been on 25mg of topamax for a few weeks for migraines. I decided to stop taking it. Migraines are worse and I can't sleep.how long after I stop taking to topamax until I can take Tylenol PM? My last dose was last night. Thanks!!
Avatar f tn Is anyone on here started taking or tried the drug Topamax for their migraines???
614508 tn?1265281722 Has anyone had any interactions/reactions with the drug Topamax when prescribed for BPII & OCD. My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks.
Avatar f tn I am 47 and have suffered from migraines and headaches for about 6 years. The only thing that helped was Topamax. I used it about 6 years ago for about 2-3 months. Unfortunately, it made me extremely nauseous and my hair started to fall out. I am so desperate for relief that I asked my doctor to try it again, but at a lower dosage. The first day I took 25 mg and felt Like I had "morning sickness" all day. I am supposed to gradually increase to 200 mg by the end of the month.
Avatar f tn on the Topamax- I’ve always had migraines and I’ve taken it in the past for that reason ... she also felt that might help with the anxiety... Seems like a lot all at once though, make sense?
Avatar f tn Does any one taking topamax for migraines have the problem of memory loss? Especially word loss when speaking or writing? I know this drug is nicknamed stupamax for a reason. It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...
Avatar f tn I also take a number of medications, including Topamax for migraine, blood pressure meds, Celebrex, asthma medication and diabetes medication. However I have had recurring visual disturbances that only happen at night. I get up in the middle of the night - to go to the bathroom - and the bathroom is covered in geometric patterns, like a checkered pattern or little lacework pattern. It's everywhere, the walls, tub, sink, floor. I feel like I'm tripping on something!
424862 tn?1203803456 Thats why i tried it my self. but it didnt work for me. Dealing with migraines has left me exposed to try anything. But be aware of the side effects and look out for them some of the meds i have tried actually (2) had strong side effects that I called my doctor the next morning to give my something else. good luck i hope it works!!
Avatar f tn I had daily headaches/migraines for months and the last thing we tried was topomax. It caused me to have incredible reactions that resembled a stroke at one point so I quit taking it after I talked with my doctor. I was also taking Prilosec for some nausea. For some reason I had forgotten to take the prilosec for a couple days and hadn't had a headache. Got in the car to start a 6 hr trip and thought I should take it since I would be eating out a lot over the next few days.
Avatar f tn Hope things are working out for you. Topamax either works for you or does not. I have had migraines (5 a week) for 13 years and I have been on Topamax for over six months now. I can honestly say it has some great points and some bad points. In the beginning, I had the side effects such as the "pins and needles", numbness, memory loss, etc. That of course was when I was gradually going through the stages of increasing my dosage keep in mind.
Avatar m tn I just started on topamax for 2 days on 25mg for headaches i had headaches for a long time. Im worried about this drug and mixing it with other drugs that i take. Im HIV positive and i take stribld everyday before bed my nero doc wants me to take topamax before bed as well. So im taking both of these pills at the same time and i care about my hiv drugs working without interuptions because the virus will get a chance to mutate. So will topamax interfere with stribld?
768044 tn?1294223436 The other day I had an appointment with my neurologist and I asked him about botox injections for my migraines. I get 15+ migraines a month (usually around 17). My migraines interfere with every aspect of my life... so I am really looking for a treatment that works. I have heard good things about botox from friends... and so I would like to give it a try. I am currently taking topamax. Before topamax I tried valproic acid and before that I tried amitriptyline.
Avatar f tn Hi there Dr perscribed me Topamax for my migraines and I am a little nervous to try them. I heard you can also lose weight with this. I quit smoking 4 weeks ago and have put on quite a bit of weight, so was wondering if you can share your experiences and side effects to see if it is worth it.
Avatar m tn Hello, i'm a 16 year old boy and i was prescribed topamax 25mg for migraines over a year ago. A few months ago i was also prescribed wellbutrin 300mg and prozac 10mg for depression and anxiety. When I first started taking the topamax i hardly sweated. I did start sweating a fair amount before taking the wellbutrin and prozac but the sweating has just increased since then and i've been getting large stains on my armpits just from sitting in class.
Avatar f tn Can anyone offer input on their experience with Topamax for migraines. Initially, the side effects were worsening migraines, worsening dizziness, fatigue and tingling in upper lip and nose so I stopped the med. Tried again and got vertigo. Dr. thinks we should stick it out and titer upwards to gain effectiveness. Wondering if smallest dosage is nearly intolerable how titering upwards could possibly be effective or if it actually does get better once your system gets used to it.
1343409 tn?1296026007 I take Topamax 100 mg once a day for migraines. I have found that it has worked wonders for me. I don't get migraines very often anymore. I was out about once a week before taking topamax and now its much less than that and when I do get them they are at least manageable. sherrilynn- I find it interesting the effect topamax had on your eating habits as I have found it to have the opposite on mine. For the most part my appetite has decreased, except for during my period of course.
Avatar n tn I have been having migraines for the last 5 to 6 years and i want to know what i can do about them i get them more and more. I have a migraine atleast 7 times a month. I have no idea what to do about them and i hope that someone can answer my question?
18440204 tn?1464888067 I had MVD surgery in which the surgeon went behind the ear to the center of the brain, then straight down into my brainstem. There were several vessels which had grown too long and looped, causing them to hit against facial nerves. Besides some paralysis, numbing and constant twitching, I looked like a freak for 32 years!! To my surprise, the surgery was a huge success! The hospital issued a public press release!!
Avatar f tn It seems to me that every neuro in the us really goes to topamax first for migraines, this concerns me. I went through 2 neuros who just kept upping and upping my topamax dosage w/o ever even talking about another preventative drug when the topamax didn't work. Finally, I got in with a headache specialist at a large neurology center and they put me on a 12 day run of frova, gave me a prescription for muscle relaxers and fiorcet, and an imitrex shot on the spot.
Avatar f tn I have had migraines for at least the past 10 years, as often as every other day. I was put on 100 mg of Topamax daily in September 2008, which helped immensely. I would still get migraines approximately twice a month, however. My migraines are triggered by bright sunlight (I live in Arizona!), orange juice, citrus, chocolate, processed foods, alcohol, some smells, pms, etc.
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
Avatar n tn I take Topamax daily for migraines and have been for a while. It helps with my migraines - for a while I didn't think it did until I was without my Rx for s couple of days and realized it helps a lot!! Some people I know have the side effect of weight loss - some have had the side effect of losing their hair. I didn't do either but my toe nails turned extremely hard and look like I have a nail fungus but I don't. I gained weight - I have leg cramps - my skin is dryer.
214901 tn?1227567555 Okay, so has anyone that has been Rx'd Topamax for headaches, actually gotten crushing headaches about 1-2 hours after taking it? I am trying hard to wait it out and work through my dosage increases but this is just insane! Thanks!
Avatar f tn s and after childbirth are often the worst times for migraines. It was true for my mother and now for me. At least we have better meds than they did back then. I remember her suffering so. Anyhow, I can't seem to find any one trigger for mine except I know for sure I can't drink alcohol at all. Especially wine. I call it "headache in a bottle". And I can forget walking into a store that sells perfume or lots of scented candles. Makes me sick just thinking about it.
Avatar m tn Ecspecially with children, anyway, how does phenobarbitol work to stop the pain of a migraine??? At the moment I am only on Topamax and take tramadol for fibromyagia, so I use that for the migraines as well. Triptains give me sever heart palapitations and cause my stomach and colon to bleed so they are not an option??? Any feedback???
