1426120 tn?1283039272 Certain medications like antidepressants cause weight gain. Polycystic ovary too causes weight gain, hence has to be ruled out by an ultrasound of abdomen. If the above causes are eliminated then you can join a weight trainer and a nutrition expert and follow their advice and lose weight under their guidance. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn One of the main symptoms of hypothyroidism is weight gain, because your thyroid controls your metabolism and when your thyroid no longer works properly, neither does your metabolism ... bingo, we've probably found the cause of your weight gain/inability to lose!! Welcome to the club. I'm assuming that you're on thyroid replacement hormones... is that correct? What med(s) and dosage(s) are you on and how long have you been on them?
Avatar f tn UNtreated hypothyroidism can contribute to weight gain - once treated, the thyroid metabolism goes back to normal so the weight should not be related at that point. Remember, most of the two-thirds of americans who are overweight do not have a thyroid problem. Would talk with your doctor about supervised weight loss plans (without weight loss meds).
Avatar f tn My GP had prescribed thyronorm tablet 50 mcg four times a week. Then he reduced it to thrice a week, as I am losing weight. I am awfully underweight. How to gain weight? Once I heard one endocrinologist saying that it is not good to prescribe thyroxine tablets as it leads to osteoporosis. Cannot understand.
Avatar f tn I struggle with my weight as it is and i have heard that with a total thyroidectomy and going on synthroid weight gain is an almost certainty. Can anyone shed light on this..I am considering a partial and if its cancer having it done again. Good or bad decision?

Avatar m tn I am extremly underweight and have been trying to gain weight my whole life. I do have times of success but whenever i get close to where i want to be my body starts to reject what i eat.It is random but sometimes a eat, say cereal, i will immediatly throw it back up after i ate it. I have no health insurance and haven't seen a doctor in years.
Avatar f tn I have a low thyroid and I am extremely thin. The thyroid weight gain is usually under 10 pounds and is mainly water. Still, I would have a full thyroid panel with thyroid antibody test to rule out thyroid disease as it could be making you not feel like exercising--leading to the weight gain. Also, children do put on weight after age 5 so the tonsil surgery could be a coincidence rather than a true correlation.
12182312 tn?1427683956 So, if for any reason your BMR dropped, say because of hypothyroidism, if nothing else changes, you will gain weight until the weight gain offsets the reduced BMR. So, say that you become hypothyroid and your BMR is actually 150 calories per day below the expected amount, for your weight, height and age. I think that means that over an extended period you would gain about 35 pounds (150 divided by 4.
2076619 tn?1331842818 The weight gain could be due to an underactive thyroid. Lithium is famous for creating hypothyroidism of which a side effect is weight gain. If your hair is falling out, your nails are brittle and/or tearing, and your internal temperature is off (among other things), you might want to consult your pdoc or an endocrinologist.
Avatar n tn fatigue/lethargy, depression, big weight gain, muscular aches.
Avatar n tn Since you know you have hypothyroidism, then I would start with the assumption that the low metabolism/weight gain is due to low levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4. Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. Scientific studies have shown that Free T3 correlated best with hypo symptoms, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all.
Avatar n tn t think enough is being done to research the weight gain associated with this disorder. The effects of the 20 lbs. I've gained in 8 yrs. has caused my bloodpressure & cholesterol to rise. I'm now on meds for HBP.
Avatar n tn You should absolutely have a Free T4 and Free T3 done along with another TSH. Yes, hypothyroidism causes weight gain. You need to make sure you get medical treatment for this right away.
Avatar f tn I can't say if your weight gain is excessive but generally weight gain with hypothyroidism is more modest in the neighborhood of 5-10lbs or so I've read. Since the purpose of your treatment was to correct an overactive thyroid, I'd expect a little weight gain since your metabolism rate should have slowed. Your activity and caloric needs to maintain your old weight will not be the same as before. It *is* possible you are now hypothyroid.
Avatar f tn I agree that you should get your thyroid levels tested... Hypothyroidism is often a cause of sudden, unexplained weight gain. Be sure you get a full thyroid panel, that includes Free T3 and Free T4, along with TSH; don't settle for just that TSH that many doctors will do and tell you is sufficient. Also ask for thyroid antibodies to determine if you have Hashimoto's, which is the number 1 cause of hypothyroidism in the developed world.
2217123 tn?1339435069 I went to Mexico and had my thyroid levels checked. These were the results: TIROIDEO TSH - 0.4 ‐ 4.2 mUI/ml My result = 1.6 T3UP - 32.0 ‐ 48.4 % My result = 31.7 T4 - 6.09 ‐12.23ug/dl My result =7.56 T7 - 1.2 ‐ 4.2 My result =2.4 The doctor there gave me some medication which is all natural (pigs thyroid). I have been taking it for about 4 weeks now, but I still dont feel any different.
Avatar n tn Being hypothyroid did make it more difficult to lose weight but the amount of weight I gained was from lifestyle. So,Can it be said my weight gain is not all thyroid related?I was able to do more than I did but I just eased into the lazier lifestyle because I didn't feel well.It became habit so that when I did feel ok,I still expended minimal energy. Also, what's better to do when you're home watching televison? EAT! This hypothyroidism is a catch 22 it seems!
Avatar f tn m a female-30years old who had never been diagnosed with any type of disorder, disease or family history of thyroid problems. But I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism (6.08 blood test results) with symptoms of tiredness, overeating, weight gain, dizziness, hot/cold flashes, and often constipation.
Avatar f tn with your Indo or find another one! The thyroid gland controls weight gain and loss, temperament, pain, depression, etc. I can only speak for myself. When my dosage isn't right, I gain weight, my skin gets really dry and cracks. My hair gets really dull and thin. I stay tired and hurt as if I have the flue. With you being athletic, trust me, nip it in the bud before you wind up gaining another 30!! I have been tested, poked and prodded in the name of finding out why I'm so big!
Avatar f tn I usually find in hypothyroidism information that it causes weight gain. I have always had the opposite problem of not being able to gain weight. Except for the past couple years my weight has been where it should be and stays pretty constant. Can you have hypothyroidism if you don't have a weight gain problem?
Avatar f tn Lab results and associated reference ranges vary from one lab to another. So to try and assess your status, we need you to post the reference ranges shown on the lab report for those test results. Since each person can have different thyroid hormone levels at which they feel normal, lab tests are not the best way to assess a person for the possibility of hypothyroidism. The presence of numerous symptoms typical of hypothyroidism is the best measure.
3046028 tn?1340538562 Hi and welcome to the forum, Yes, having a hysterectomy can affect weight loss efforts; drop in hormones does all types of things to us. I'd also have to ask if you've had tests for thyroid function, done. Hypothyroidism is one of major contributors to weight gain/inability to lose weight. Hypothyroidism also causes high cholesterol levels, so while losing weight may help, it may not be enough.
