Avatar f tn I have a low thyroid and I am extremely thin. The thyroid weight gain is usually under 10 pounds and is mainly water. Still, I would have a full thyroid panel with thyroid antibody test to rule out thyroid disease as it could be making you not feel like exercising--leading to the weight gain. Also, children do put on weight after age 5 so the tonsil surgery could be a coincidence rather than a true correlation.
Avatar f tn Hi has anyone out there got any tips for weight loss with an underactive thyroid. I am currantly on 150mg daily which my gp says is a little too high but I am still gaining weight. 638830 tn?1222980691 If a person has an underactive thyroid is it certain they will gain weight? Obviously they need to be careful what they eat and exercise but does it make it more difficult to maintain? Especially when pregnant??? I apologize if this seems like a vain question, I'm just curious. If it does make it more difficult, what can you do, diet wise to prevent excessive weight gain and stay healthy?
Avatar n tn When I began the synthroid, the weight gain stopped; however, getting off the excess is fairly perplexing to me also. I'd also appreciate info . . .

Avatar f tn If it is something caused by an underactive thyroid I thought I would have to be more than my ideal weight? Well, that's what I've read up about when googling "underactive thyroid". Any help is greatly welcomed. Thanks!!
Avatar n tn If you find that you are keeping within the calorie intake of food recommended for men and are still putting weight on despite everything you are doing, then make an appointment with your doctor to check your thyroid level. An underactive thyroid glad will make it very difficult for your to lose weight. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn Sometimes the medications taken for depression cause weight gain. I would look into that and also the thyroid levels.
Avatar f tn I have been debating the possibility of underactive thyroid for a little while now. My mom has Grave's disease and a VERY overactive thyroid, so I guess it could run in the genes... Within the past year or so I feel like I can suddenly eat a ton of food and not gain weight. It's really weird. I'm by no means underweight (5'3" and 112 lbs.) BUT I have seriously felt like a bottomless pit this past month! I can't get rid of this crazy hunger!
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed in 1996 with an over active thyroid, I weighed 111 lbs. I'm 5'5" tall. After treatment for a few years the thyroid went to underactive. I've been on 88mg of Levothyroxine for many many many years. Recently I noticed a weight gain without trying. My PCP appt in October 2017 I was 142, my most recent visit along with thyroid testing I was 146. I have not changed my eating habits at all.
10598003 tn?1411366057 Yes, that's okay. Every woman gains differently. I'm sure your doctor is tracking your weight gain, and they'll discuss with you if they are concerned. I didn't gain any weight until about that point in my pregnancy, but after that the gain was steady. I gained about 30 lbs total.
Avatar n tn Hi: I have been on Eltroxin for 1.5 months now and although i have kept my weight gain under control for many years (although I have been overweight), my weight has suddenly jumped 4.5 Kg (all fat and still gaining) as from the time i started the meds. What can be the cause of it. I have never in my life been this heavy or have gained so quickly. I follow a low GI diet and exercise regularly.
Avatar f tn I gained a bit of weight but remained at this stable weight for a few more years even after the birth of another 2 children!! Around 18 months ago i started to GAIN weight excessively! (around 3 pounds per week). By the time i had gained approx 19 pounds i returned to my GP who thought i needed more thyroxine. After more blood test and yet agian to everyones surprise i was well OVERACTIVE in fact i had more than 3 times the amount of thyroxine in my body than usual.
Avatar n tn How constantly is constantly? Like, you eat all day long and large amounts? My gran used to eat all day, but she just was actually nibbling, and accidentally buying off her appetite by never sitting down to a full meal. Have you talked to a doctor about this? The usual reason for being underweight is that you are burning off more calories than you are taking in, and he or she might prescribe some of the nutrition shakes to supplement your normal meals if that seems to be what's doing it.
1327431 tn?1327072104 Tired , sleepy , Neck and Shoulder pain , Confused lol need to get a blood test me thinks weight gain only a couple of pounds though , struggled on holiday there with the heat slept too much .... My last test was 0.
Avatar n tn Hi, an increased TSH means you are hypothyroid. This means your thyroid is underactive and one of the many symptoms of this condition is that it can cause you to gain weight as it slows down your metabolism. When you start medication it hopefully might help prevent you from gaining more weight as opposed to actually making you put on weight.
Avatar m tn Are you taking supplements to bulk up? Are you taking anything that might be affecting your adrenal glands? The reason I ask is this. An underactive thyroid is a very vague diagnosis. There is a reason it is underactive. It may be an autoimmune disorder. It may be transient thyroidism. It may be because your adrenal glands are under a LOT of stress, and they have slowed down your thyroid gland as a protective measure.
488881 tn?1209227543 Hi there, thanks for your response this has helped me understand abit more, I am really worried about my weight i was once over weight and i got so down i hated it, i managed to shed 3 stones 4 years ago and am now comfortable with myself, but when the doctor told me common signs of an underactive thyroid was weight gain i felt sick, i am quite active and i am always on the go at work, and i do try to eat healthy but latley i have been sooo tired i just cant be botherd with anything im also gett
Avatar n tn I am going through thyroid problems right now myself.. i have an underactive thyroid. I am seeing my doctor every 4 weeks and am on pure vitamins. My thyroid is getting better slowly but surely. most doctors put people on medications right away but i would consider trying the vitamins if you are able to. doing it the natural way may be easier than doing it the medication way. keep your head up! thats what i am trying to do..

Avatar f tn Thank you for your comment! Don't have numbers because I received a phone call and got the perscription from the doctors office!! My iron count is also low so I am currently on iron now too. Symptoms are extreamly tired and weight gain(even though I'm expecting I've been trying too control weight gain best I could by excercise and healthy diet) . Luckily that is all I'msuffering from so far!
12773 tn?1328913186 Yah I know the underactive itself maybe the reason I am gaining weight now. I don't want to gain any more. I don't see my doc again till July 7, so maybe they will call me in for the B12 shot and prescribe something for my thyroid. Hopefully that will take this weight back off. I am not liking this at all.. I like being a 10.. LOL Will keep ya updated on the PCR and what doc says about these other 2 things.. although they may refer me to someone who specializes in that.
Avatar n tn if your thyroid is underactive it causes your metabolism to slow down..could cause you to gain weight, or make it difficult to lose. it also can , in general, make your bodily functions just much slower.,.make u feel kinda "draggy" and tired all of the time. i think it can be caused by some sort of autoimmune reaction where your body produces antibodies and for some reason they attack and gradually destry the thyroid gland..thats why you feel so tired..it slows everything down.
