Avatar n tn It would not be normal to gain weight when starting thyroid treatment though. Usually people gain weight when they have low thyroid and then lose weight when treatment is started. Have you been evaluated for other conditions?
Avatar f tn They are complete opposites and somewhat have exact opposite symptoms. Although there is a lot of duplication with Thyroid. Suppressed generally means limited out put. This SLOWS down metabolism. So in Thyroid terms that would be low thyroid or more commonly known as hypothyroidism or Hypo for short.
Avatar f tn 3) my doctor has started me on 10mg carbimazole daily and I am really anxious about the weight gain since I haven’t actually lost weight even with the overactive thyroid. Has anyone got any advice? I am just being paranoid? Thank you in advance!
Avatar n tn Symptoms of hypothyroidism usually go along with a slowdown in metabolism, and can include fatigue, weight gain, and depression, among others. This above is just a clip off the eloxtrin link . As I understand it this med is a Canadian based med that here in the states brand is levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn I have been debating the possibility of underactive thyroid for a little while now. My mom has Grave's disease and a VERY overactive thyroid, so I guess it could run in the genes... Within the past year or so I feel like I can suddenly eat a ton of food and not gain weight. It's really weird. I'm by no means underweight (5'3" and 112 lbs.) BUT I have seriously felt like a bottomless pit this past month! I can't get rid of this crazy hunger!
1225178 tn?1318980604 One of side effects of many antidepressants is weight gain. Also, the more sedentary we become the less calories we burn. If your calorie intake exceeds the burn rate you're going to gain weight. Foods containing high fat content will pack the pounds on too.
Avatar f tn If there is weight gain going on the thyroid hormone most likely is too low due to the PTU's... How long have you been on it? Get the lab sheet. Your ranges of 4-12 don't make much sense. Getting those will help alot.
Avatar f tn my friend told me this could be an overactive thyroid but i should lose weight not gain weight. my doctor said he could not treat me for this and that he would make me an appointment with another doctor , but thats been a month ago and he still has not gotten me that appointment. should i be worried about this , and see another doctor? thanks for any information.
Avatar f tn Looks like my thyroid is operative and I should be losing weight, why would I be so sluggish and gain weight so rapidly ! I was on synthroid previously and could lose weight easily on that but felt horrible on it, now that I find a drug I feel good on and not anxious, etc I gain all this weight??
Avatar n tn ve noticed alot of changes with my body and I have a high suspiscion it has something to do with my thyroid maybe other things as well. On my paternal mothers side, my aunts thyroid taken out....or something of that sort. Im a 23 yr old female and not healthy I must say. I'm overweight (5'3 or 5'4 & now 253 lbs, was 275- 3 months ago)but lately I seem to be losing more weight than I should & now I can tell because my skin is starting to droop a bit .
Avatar f tn I gained a bit of weight but remained at this stable weight for a few more years even after the birth of another 2 children!! Around 18 months ago i started to GAIN weight excessively! (around 3 pounds per week). By the time i had gained approx 19 pounds i returned to my GP who thought i needed more thyroxine. After more blood test and yet agian to everyones surprise i was well OVERACTIVE in fact i had more than 3 times the amount of thyroxine in my body than usual.
Avatar f tn I can't say if your weight gain is excessive but generally weight gain with hypothyroidism is more modest in the neighborhood of 5-10lbs or so I've read. Since the purpose of your treatment was to correct an overactive thyroid, I'd expect a little weight gain since your metabolism rate should have slowed. Your activity and caloric needs to maintain your old weight will not be the same as before. It *is* possible you are now hypothyroid.
Avatar f tn I have been optimal now for about 2 years with proper treatment. Weight gain for me was about 55 pounds but I did lose that until recently as I gained 10 back. What concerns me is you claim treatment involved iodine while you were hyper? Who put you on this? Hyperthyroid is an overproduction of thyroid hormone involving iodine atoms and adding in more iodine will result on more production of hormone - not less.
Avatar m tn what are the main symptoms of having and overactive thyroid?...i dont lose weight because ive alway been skinny...
Avatar n tn 2 tsh not detected heart rate is 98, dont understand this as i am so tired and putting on weight even thou i am dieting thot when it was overactive you lost weight and had 2 much energy, any help would be great
Avatar f tn If your having an issue gaining weight, have an MD do thyroid tests ie: Free T4 Free T3 and TSH, If you have an overactive thyroid it keeps your metabolism high, which burns off more calories then you are taking in, you would have an elevated heart rate and feel ansy, and jittery, some experience tachycardia (fast Heart Rate) you ca check this yourself by feeling around your wrist for your pulse, note wher the second hand is, then count the beats for one minute, Noral range is anywhere from 60 t
Avatar n tn Have you been diagnosed with thyroid disease previously? Are you currently on thyroid med? Your lab results would indicate hypER thyroid and though I'm not sure how it works, I have heard that some people do gain weight while being hypER. I'm sure someone who has more knowledge than I will chime in and be able to give a better answer.
Avatar m tn In the space of about 1 month I lost half a stone for no apparent reason, so I turned to the internet to look for reasons why this might be. Overactive thyroid is one of the things I came across so I looked into it more and some of the symptoms ring a bell; Mood swings, Sweating, Tiredness, weight loss regardless of increased appetite, sleeping poorly, shaky hands (sometimes) and that my heart occasionally feels like it skips a beat.
Avatar f tn Hi, thanks for the info. What have you found the side effects of the medication to be, if you don't mind saying. At the risk of sounding vain, I do not want to gain weight! I am 43 and in menopause!
Avatar f tn Bear13 is right, weight loss is common with severe depression (I've lost more than 70lbs in 18months, but that's because I lost my appetite and couldn't eat. It can't be normal to be eating more and losing weight...what about thyroid?
Avatar n tn and I have weakness in legs and arms, hair loss and been like a yoyo gaining weight and loosing weight. But I cant rest due to the coughing which is worse at night..
Avatar f tn ve been told my thyroid is overactive. One of my concerns is to wheather or not I will gain weight with this medication? I live a pretty clean life style with little junk food or sweets. I eat alot of fruits and vegs. Also keeping red meat down to once or twice a week and small portions. I prefer fish and chicken but have a real problem not gaining. I can not get out and exercise like I want do to two really bad legs and alot of chronic pain.
Avatar n tn t work so I am now back on Carbimazole I have gone from *8st to almost 10st in three months so people with an overactive thyroid can put on weight not just people that are under, I eat like a bird so it's not what is being ingested and I don't have an overactive imagination. It's there and feels horrible. I am also waiting for a kidney transplant so it's all a mess really and I don't find the Endocrinologist at all helpful.
Avatar f tn with overactive thyroid can this make you feel what I call whoozy headed like your moving and your not or some times light headed? I feel this way off and on during the day and I have been to my Dr and thats when he told me I have overactive thyroid i believe and also put me on a blood pressure pill. I also have mitro valve prolapes sence i was 6 yrs old I dont know what causing this my husband says i am fine give the meds time to work but i am scared that I have a heart problem or a turmor.
Avatar f tn s not proper weight loss with hyper thyroid because of the muscle loss and that needs to go back in. I too wish there were more positive stories - I have grown very sceptical of endless people saying they've gained 4 or 4 stone. I am back to my pre-op positive attitude that now I'm not too ill to exercise, I'm going to make 'the most of it and not sit around doing nothing and making excuses.
