Common Questions and Answers about Thumb pain numbness

finger

Avatar f tn For a few weeks I have been experiencing shooting nerve pain my left thumb. The pain/numbness occurs at the base of the thumb joint where it meets the web part of hand. Rubbing over this area, i can feel the nerve move across the joint. Pushing on the inside of thumb causes tingling/numbness but when I try to grip something I will get sharp shocking pain into thumb. I've been icing it but when I go ti stretch I feel the nerve being stretched in thumb which is painful.
Avatar n tn I have numbness and tingling in the pad of my thumb ( from the tip of my thumb down to the first crease marking the joint). What can I do to treat this problem and when should I seek medical treatment?
Avatar m tn H there I had the same surgery last april and my surgeon said it could be up to a year before feeling in your thumb returns. I had the same numbness down one side. He then discovered he had severed the nerves in my thumb during the procedure and last week I went in to have them repaired. Am now in paster for 3 weeks in loads of pain and very fed up!
Avatar n tn Symptoms begin with numbness and tingling of the first three or two fingers from the thumb side. Then the numbness or tingling can spread upwards to the arms. Nerve conduction studies are quite diagnostic. Treatment is usually by splints and steroid injections. Surgery may be required in some cases. Only a consultation with your primary care physician can help diagnose. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn The following comes and goes not more than a few seconds muscle spasms in my feet, calves tingle all the way up to my knee, twitching over my entire body when at rest including eye twitching, real ache in both arms(this has improved since being on Lyrica), both hands tingle and numb some, thumb hurts sometimes when using it and NOT at all other times and the other thumb is beginning to hurt (the thumb issue really is worrying me), slight numbness in my cheek, ear and part of my head will tingle,
Avatar m tn The pain in my upper back/lower neck came back really bad, as did the numbness in my index finger and tip of my right thumb. Turning my head does not seem to help. Doctor prescribed Vicodin and muscle relaxers, plus physical therapy. Since this is an HMO (Kaiser), Physical therapy was 6 weeks out. I went to a Chiropactor while waiting on PT. The Chiropractor took xrays and said my disc at one level (lower C or upper T?) was very narrow and told me there was nothing he could do.
Avatar f tn I was pulling up my pants a few weeks ago when my left radial side of wrist gave a huge pop! Since I have a popping & painwith every movement of my thumb or twisting of hans/wrist. As well it feels like bones(?) are being pulled apart in the wrist. I also have some numbness on the left side of tip of thumb to the first knuckle. I use a splint, have tried both topical and oral anti inflamatorios, as well as ice. Not getting better.
Avatar m tn The symptoms include pain at the level of the problem (i.e. neck or back etc) and pain that may radiate down the arm or leg (depending on where the problem is). In more advanced cases, muscle weakness or sensory symptoms such as tingling or numbness may occur. A radiculopathy is often diagnosed based on history, physical examination, and MRI of the spine. Another possibility is local trauma.
Avatar f tn Hi, bottom part of thumb, cannot bend, no pain, or swelling , I can move the whole thumb, but not the bottom part.. Any idea ??
Avatar m tn ty move my hand up or my fingers / thumb, tingly feeling numbness feeling from thumb fingers to almost elbow looks like near tyhe wrist is also swelling alittle even if i use other hand to move my hand upward i cant hold there. Thumb feels the most tingly numbness also thumb barley moves in any direction, what on earth could it be? sometimes pain in the wrist..... can't squeeze anything hard.... i probably should go to the walk-in clinic but it costs a pretty penny....
Avatar n tn Symptoms involve pain in the hands and arms when typing and using the mouse, and generally end up making many daily activities painful or impossible. Burning, numbness, or tingling in your palm, wrist, thumb, or fingers also are the common symptoms encountered by most patients. Common causes are a repetitive motion with your wrist like typing on a computer keyboard, using a computer mouse, playing racquetball or handball, sewing, painting, writing, or using a vibrating tool.
Avatar n tn For some reason I woke up about a week and a half ago and I have had sharp pains in my left hand as well as numbness in the mornings in my hand towards the lower palm of my hand. If I were to guess for myself I would say I have a pinched nerve because I can't move my hand in a particular direction. If you look at the picture where the arrow is where I experience the pain, it's more to the upper side of my wrist where the thumb meets.
Avatar m tn About a month ago I was using a spray can to put a coat of clear gloss on a wooden table... After holding down the spray can for some time with my left thumb, i noticed that when i stopped, there was a very severe case of what one may call numbness, others may call super sensitivity from the pad to the tip of my left thumb. I expected it to go away after a few minutes, but lingered for almost a day.
Avatar n tn Hmmm, I need a little bit more information regarding the distribution of your numbness and when the numbness occurs to offer you the best advice, however, I can give you 2 separate diagnoses which you may be experiencing, The first, and most likely, is a common condition known as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) which results when the median nerve (a nerve in the arm that supplies the hand) gets compressed/irritated as it passes through a connective tissue sheath at the level of the wrist.
Avatar n tn I woke up this morning and have regained feeling in my index finger, but am still experiencing numbness in the thumb region. Should I seek medical attention or will it heal by itself?
Avatar f tn I had CTS surgery 4 weeks ago which relieved the tingling and numbness in my thumb, index and middle finger. Prior to surgery I had numbness in all of my fingers on my right hand. They did an EMG and found loss to all my fingers. After surgery now both my ringfinger, little finger and that outer side of my hand are totally numb. I am also experiencing pain in the palm of my hand so bad that I have to take Ultram or Hydracodone.
Avatar m tn For about a week I've had slight tingling and numbness in my right thumb and right arm after about 2 days of mild pain in my right shoulder blade. Throughout this time I've also had mild pain in my neck. Also when my arm hangs straight down that's when the tingling and numbness is most present in my arm and thumb. I still have full control of my arm and hand but the tingling numbness is both annoying and troubling.
Avatar f tn I can see something jumping up and down. Other times my thumb twitches. I get burning pain on top of my thumb etc. This is all new. The physiotherapist said something must be going on and he figures I will need another elbow surgery. I am unable to see the surgeon earlier because she is away. My next appt with her is in a few weeks time so I suppose I can hold off.
Avatar f tn A few days ago i started noticing some numbness on the tip of my thumb. Each day it seems to get a little worse. Now the numbness is in my thumb, pointer finger, palm and up halfway up my arm. It doesnt hurt, just numb and tingly. In the beginning the feeling would come and go, now it seems to be more constant. As far as i know i didnt do anything to injure myself. Is this serious, who should i see?
Avatar m tn I have hope for my numbness because i will be getting that diagnosed soon enough, but you have probably noticed a trend throughout my story... What about the wrist pain? Not the thumb pain or the numbness or the tingling, the top of the wrist pain that won't allow me to put weight on my wrist after a YEAR.
Avatar f tn I have the burn in my neck and shoulders everyday, I still have the numbness in the thumb, spasms still happen. My pain level prior to surgery was over a 10, now I stay between a 2 -5. I did apply for social security disability, which the surgeon said he would send them the records, but he would not be involved. I don't know if this is forever situation or what to expect. I know I would have rather given birth to a baby elephant than go through this.
Avatar f tn s been close to 4 months later, and just last night it started again. It just happened and that is why I am questioning if thumb twitching is something anyone experiences. It is such a weird feeling.
Avatar m tn When scalene muscle is the cause of pain, the pain is referred to chest, inner lining of scapula (shoulder bone), shoulder, posterior and lateral sides of the arm right up to the thumb and index finger. Repeated clicking of mouse of computer can injure the tendon of index, cause compression of median nerve and also cause this numbness. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!
Avatar n tn This caused CTS. Numbness in thumb and 4 fingers. Was operated on March 2009. I still have the numbness in thumb and fingers when I type or use it. It does not hurt when not in use. When I had the nerve test done in Feb of 2009 they said I had SEVERE Damage of CTS. Will the numbness go away? Or what can I expect in the future? I hope it goes away. My right hand is okay.
Avatar n tn re not having THUMB numbness as well (test the middle of the thumb on the palm side and compare to the other by light touch). If they feel the same, it is your neck. If you notice some numbness there as well, it MAY be carpal tunnel. But the neck is the more likely culprit. Anti-inflammatories won't cure this because it is this MECHANICAL irritation of the nerve (not chemical by inflammation) that occurs with loss of disc height.
