Common Questions and Answers about Thumb pain computer mouse

finger

Avatar n tn Of late, I have noticed mild pain in my right hand and wrist especially when on the computer. The pain is more neuralgic type and not necessarily bone or muscle pain. I feel it is also finger specific, especially all my fingers other than my thumb and pinkie all of which I use to move the cursor. I am afraid I may have carpal tunnel. Please do suggest what to do now.
Avatar m tn This could be carpal tunnel syndrome due to entrapment of median nerve. it is caused by prolonged use of computer or thumb and index finger as in improper position of arm and wrist can result in mouse elbow. Application of ice pack, anti-inflammatory drugs, wearing wrist braces, stretching and strengthening exercises when the pain subsides and modification of the way you click mouse goes a long way in avoiding further injury and treating the present symptoms.
584818 tn?1218287801 The funny thing is, I actually switched to using my left hand for my computer mouse about 2 months ago. I cut back my computer use compared to months ago and years past. A couple of days ago when I woke up, my right hand had pain to make a fist and numbness in the index and ring finger. It would eventually go away and be fine all day. But when I awake the next morning - same thing. This just started a couple of days ago.
Avatar n tn I believed I had Carpal tunnel syndrome because when I was writing i would get a shooting pain up and down ONLY my wrist area, and when on the computer when my right hand was using the mouse and resting on the desk at the same time, my wrist hurt too much to have any pressure on it.
Avatar n tn It has been about 2 weeks now since my wrist started hurting. The pain is on the thumb side of the wrist. It don't think it is a fracture because there is no swelling or discoloration. But it sure hurts a lot. When I wake up it hurts a lot - even for the slightest moment and then the range of motion improves as the day progresses. I am not sure if it is a a ligament tear.
Avatar m tn When scalene muscle is the cause of pain, the pain is referred to chest, inner lining of scapula (shoulder bone), shoulder, posterior and lateral sides of the arm right up to the thumb and index finger. Repeated clicking of mouse of computer can injure the tendon of index, cause compression of median nerve and also cause this numbness. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!
Avatar n tn m a graphic designer, recently graduated from college and just started my first job. Toward the end of college I occasionally got pain in my right wrist from computer-mouse use; ergonomics seemed to help, however my wrist got weaker over the summer. When I started my first full-time job in Sept, the pain became unbearable. My wrist is weak, I cannot do my hair, stir food on the stove, or put any pressure on that hand (no yoga, no push-ups).
Avatar m tn burning/stinging sensation on the back of both hands when writing, holding a book or using computer mouse, searing tricep pain and shooting stinging pain from hands into forearms and shoulders (not exactly a straight traveling pain but more diffuse through arm when using fingers for typing, texting or holding things. All symptoms bilateral. Nov: saw internist who suspected cervical disk/nerve issue. MRI of neck showed only minor hypertrophy.
Avatar n tn I also heard that when your wrist near your hand is red from useing the computer mouse for hours changes your Blood Pressure is that true. Is that something to worry about?
Avatar m tn Can a laser mouse for a computer cause permanent vision damage? I know that certain lasers can. I ask this because I recently bought a new laser mouse and looked at the bottom of the mouse because i felt something stuck when i moved my mouse. I looked at the lense where the laser is supposed to be. I have maybe looked at the lense where the laser is about 2-3 times each at different times. I did not pick up the mouse and put it directly infront of my face or eyes.
Avatar n tn But mainly, I want my thumb to quit popping out of joint. I am a graphic artist and after several hours on the computer using the mouse, it starts this problem. Can anyone help?
Avatar f tn Is it in your computer mouse hand? If you're on the computer a lot, you might want to think about mouse placement and the design of the mouse. If you don't spend a lot of time on the computer, then consider your most time-consuming activity and how you are doing it. What position do you sleep in? I remember a friend who had recurrent hand pain with bruising, and it turned out she had a habit of throwing her arm over her head in her sleep. She was hitting her hand on the headboard.
Avatar f tn Application of ice pack, anti-inflammatory drugs, wearing wrist braces, stretching and strengthening exercises when the pain subsides and modification of the way you click mouse goes a long way in avoiding further injury and treating the present symptoms. Try these tips. Maybe you should consult an occupational therapist and lean proper use of mouse, key pad and proper positioning of body while using computers. Physiotherapy will go a long way in improving your condition.
Avatar n tn My problem is that my index finger falls asleep when I write or even scroll with a computer mouse. Even when I exercise the index finger starts tingling. Its really weird this has never happened to me before. Can you help? I'm not sure if its serious enough to see a doctor. Thanks for your help in advance.

645800 tn?1466860955 I was just sitting at my computer wondering what to do next until my pain meds kicked in. So I figured I see what kind of display setting I could change to make things more interesting. So I went to the control panel of Windows ( I am running Windows 7) to check it out. And was I surprised. One of the settings was for the orientation for the monitor. They offered landscape ( the way we normally see things), Portrait ( everything tipped to the side), Reverse Landscape, and Reverse Portrait.
Avatar n tn And when you are on the computer, you use your mouse of corse. And your thumb sweats a lot right? and your whole hand may sweat a lot. Almost every time you get on the pc huh? If the answer is yes, I will tell you why this is happening to your thumb. And no it is not from the sweat alone.
Avatar f tn Very similar story, earlier elbow/arm,shoulder pain that disappeared, but no known injury and 62 year old female, use computer mouse, keyboard a lot. No pain in thumb, just doesn't work to bend last distal joint.in right thumb. Same story, first noticed with trying to use a lighter. First joint seems to work fine. Just thought it was a curious mystery "fluke" associated with age, and not a big deal. But I guess it's been about 5 weeks so wondering how others have fared.
Avatar m tn I noticed this a year or two ago, that my fingers primarily on the hand I use the mouse with, naturally rest in the position as if they were still holding a mouse or bent to type, my knuckles are also larger then before, they have been like this since. here are some photographs of the hand I use for the mouse which is the worst. sorry for the poor lighting btw i have eczema/dermatitis on my hands so that's why they are reddish.
Avatar f tn - It hurts to move my head, the right side of my upper body or even to cough. The pain goes all the way to my wrist - even using the mouse at work. The only time I can relive the pain is if I place my right arm on top of my head - It is not affecting my breathing.. but the pain is steady - it does not go away, even with pain killers - makes for a very restless night of sleep(and extremely uncomfortable that carries throughout my day. I know I need to go to the Doctor - however, till then..
Avatar m tn Application of ice pack, anti-inflammatory drugs, wearing wrist braces, stretching and strengthening exercises when the pain subsides and modification of the way you click mouse or such work goes a long way in avoiding further injury and treating the present symptoms. Try these tips. Maybe you should consult an occupational therapist and learn proper use of mouse, key pad and proper positioning of body while using computers or whatever work you do that causes repetitive movements.
Avatar m tn Nearly 12 weeks post trigger thumb/carpal tunnel surgery on primary hand, the thumb joint is enlarged and hand still feels tight. Pain in the region of the surgery and thumb when hand is utilized in a normal/usual pattern. Palm has some discoloration and remains tender. What would you recommend? Would an orthopedic physician be of any assistance? Thank you.
Avatar n tn There are exercises you can do, look them up under "neck pain from working on the computer;" some stretches and stuff. Not that this comes from only working on the computer, but if you are right-handed and mouse with your right hand, it's a suspect.
