119341 tn?1232563757 ScienceDaily (Feb. 29, 2008) — Thalidomide, a drug blamed in the 1950s for causing birth defects, is now showing promise as a safe and effective treatment for women with recurrent ovarian cancer, according to a study led by a University of Minnesota Cancer Center researcher. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Levi Downs, Jr., M.D.
167426 tn?1254086235 ” The study compared the effectiveness and safety of the combination of thalidomide and topotecan, a chemotherapy often used for ovarian cancer, versus topotecan alone for treatment of recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer in patients who had received prior treatment. Epithelial ovarian cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissue that covers the ovary.

Because both agents have antiangiogenic properties, the combination of the two might be more effective than topotecan alone, Dr. Levi S. Downs Jr., of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and associates speculated.
Avatar f tn Sip pedialyte to keep from getting dehydrated. And green apple jolly ranchers helped me too.
Avatar f tn Someone said that Topotecan worked better when combined with thalidomide -- don't know much more about it than that, although when I have chemo again (when the Arimidex doesn't hold my counts steady anymore) they are threatening me with topotecan next.

Avatar n tn I have these red lumps on my legs of various sizes. It hurts to walk, and now I ache all over. They weren't really itching until today, but now they've started to. I saw my dr. about them, and he said it was erythema nodosum as a result of an allergic reaction to Levaquin. However, since then I've had minor difficulty breathing. I'm an asthmatic, so that's not abnormal, but still... Any help would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn The only thing I can think of would be nerve ending damage which can happen while having treatment. Ask your doctor about that. I had it and it is not nice.
Avatar f tn It is very difficult to treat, but current therapies include steroids, vitamins, cryosurgery, thalidomide and UVB light. If staphylococcus or other infection is present, then antibiotics may be needed. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar f tn Just to be on the safe side. You never know... Thalidomide was once considered safe too, but the result was catastrophic!
764257 tn?1234724152 Thank you all for your quick responses. I talked to my Oncologist today when I saw him and he doesn't want me to go on a diet right now. I am having a problem with the Thalidomide that I am taking as it is making me dizzy, upsets my stomach and nauseous and I think he is concerned about me going on a diet because of the side effects. He really didn't go into it but that is what I think.
Avatar f tn Hi, Prurigo nodularis is very hard to treat, but current therapies include steroids, vitamins, cryosurgery, thalidomide and UVB light. In the event that staphylococcus or other infection is present, antibiotics have proven effective. A physician may administer a strong dose of prednisone, which will almost immediately stop the itch/scratch cycle. However, cessation of steroids allows relapse to occur, usually within a few weeks.
Avatar f tn Hmm I did have a look online so many ppl who have take it in there pergancy have had baby/children with heart defect doctors should give you heads up before handing it over like it is safe to take
Avatar f tn Has anyone found anything else that lessons the symtoms of this? I recently started the Topotecan/Thalidomide course which could add to this problem.

Avatar f tn Thalidomide was also the most common morning sickness medicine in the 1950's have you read up about that?
Avatar m tn Ribavirin is also a teratogen in some animals species and thus poses a theoretical reproductive risk in humans, remaining a hazard as long as the drug is present, which can be as long as 6 months after a course of the drug has ended. It has nothing to do with the menstrual cycle. It has to do with how the presence of ribavirin in the body can impact the development of the baby.
Avatar f tn s exacerbated by morning sickness, which I discovered today when attempting to eat canned pears (felt great for a few minutes then got a drop from outta nowhere). Sadly ginger ale and candies fall into the category of things that will probably make me worse. It seems that I definitely have to force myself to eat once an hour and not wait until I feel rotten. I love reading your suggestions, thanks! And yes fingers crossed this baby sticks around.
Avatar f tn t sit on me right, and I have areas on my thoracic area which are numb to touch. I was a thalidomide baby and have a full hip replacement to one hip.
