414508 tn?1222627690 You can take up to 4,000 mgs. Take the L-Tyrosine with B6 to help absorption. Wait about one hour before eating breakfast. The L-Tyrosine will give you a surge of physical and mental energy that will help counteract the malaise. You may continue to take it each morning for as long as it helps. If you find it gives you the "coffee jitters," consider lowering the dosage or discontinuing it altogether. Occasionally, L-Tyrosine can cause the runs.
Avatar n tn I'm agreeing with erijohn, it sounds like a genetic issue. He should try Omega 3 fish oil, I think 2 to 4 grams a day is the recommended dose to raise the HDL (good cholesterol levels) and to lower the Triglicerides, assuming they are high. We all have reasons why we do or do not take certain medications, and I respect that.
Avatar n tn Told to take Niacin by MD to reduce triglycerides. Took 500 mg tonight before going to bed, along with other meds / herbs. I was told to expect a bit of "flushing" but became pretty concerned when after 45 mins I had an intense burning all over on my skin; face felt puffy and tight; heart seemed to be beating noticeably.

I take zoloft and a benzo for my anxiety/depression. I don't have an interest in going off them unless a vitamin therapy were to completely eleminate my problems.
Avatar n tn I know someone who recovered from a stroke by taking niacin so I was taking that, but not enough to do much good. Does anyone suggest niacin? Does it have to be taken before eating food or with food? Also does anyone have anything to say about Mona vie- a drink with acai berries in it that seems to make me feel better.
1063764 tn?1272821064 Hello, I have been taking 20 mgs of fluoxetine now since the summer. I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg.
Avatar f tn So, make sure you run everything by your doctor and come up with a mutually agreed upon plan. Niacin HAS been used to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion. And if you are on a cholesterol lowering medication already, it may have no effect at all.
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..

Avatar n tn There is only one interaction that would be of any concern. Treatment with both simvastatin and niacin may result in muscle pain or tenderness or muscle weakness. Using simvastatin together with niacin is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If you are using both medicines together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines. It is important to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all other medicines that you are using.
Avatar n tn I would cut all SR niacin and replace it with IR niacin. IR is much easier on the liver. You may want to take a couple of weeks off to let your liver recover and then titrate back up to where you left off at your reduced dosage. IR niacin is in and out of your system quickly, allowing your liver to recover from dealing with it. The SR hangs around so your liver must deal with it for extended periods of time, not giving it much time to rest.
