Avatar m tn Hello, For these dots the possibilities of lichen sclerosus and vitiligo should be ruled out. Lichen sclerosus is a chronic disease which effects usually the genital areas. The exact cause is not known and can be too active immune system and hormone problems. Some people have also proposed a genetic and hereditary basis of disease. Treatment consists of strong cortisone cream or ointment on the skin.

Avatar m tn Diagnosis is by skin biopsy and treatment consists of topical and intralesional steroids, tacrolimus and CO2 laser. Severe cases may require surgical intervention. The other possibility is of lichen planus which is a chronic immunological disease presenting with similar symptoms. Third possibility is of vitiligo which is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed.
Avatar m tn Hello, From the symptoms you should consult a dermatologist and get vitiligo ruled out. It is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin are destroyed. As a result, white patches appear on the skin in different parts of the body. Diagnosis can be confirmed by external examination, blood tests to check skin cell count for melanocytes and biopsy of the skin patches. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.

Avatar n tn Certain factors that may increase the chance of getting vitiligo can be inherited. In fact, about 30% of vitiligo cases run in families. Statistically, 10 to 20 percent of people who have vitiligo fully regain their skin color. This is true for the those who are young, whose vitiligo reaches its peak in less than 6 months and is located mainly on the facial area. Avatar m tn The specialist reviewed all of the options with us - cyclosporine, pilocarpine or tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said that very rarely has she seen any dog respond to cyclosporine after not responding to tacrolimus. She also said that because our dog doesn't have a dry, goopy nose, that pilocarpine wouldn't be a first choice. She recommended a mix of tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said sirolimus is new. I have not been able to find anything about this drug on the internet.

My primary care physician did test my thyroid when I first met him when he noticed I had Vitiligo and I found out I have hypothyroidism. I am being treated for that but I've read that this autoimmune disorder may be caused by vitamin deficiencies and my doctor has never mentioned I should be tested.
