Stroke recovery in dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Stroke recovery in dogs

Avatar n tn The neurosurgeon did not offer much hope for us to survive the stroke nor in her recovery. She has already beat the odds. My mom was in ICU for 3 weeks and step-down 1 week and in rehab hospital for two months now. I have come to learn the dr.'s don't like or really now prognosis on recovery because everyone recovers differently. I have been told over and over again they don't know why some gain more function than others. My mom pulled out her breathing tube which she had for 2.
Avatar n tn Just my thoughts, as I have gone through a similar experience. My comments posted in Feb. 2005 "Hemorrhagic Stroke Recovery". My 55 yr old mom did not follow commands for the dr's, she often looked at them like she had no idea what they were saying, they would say "give me a thumbs up" or "stick your tongue out". They asked her "what year it was", her name" and she had no idea what they were asking.
Avatar n tn Hi Brenda, I would say never! I am dealing with the same question. I had SSHL in November. Left ear completely deaf. I was told there was a minimal chance of any recovery. I saw numerous ENT's. The recovery timeframe I heard differed with each doctor & seemed to be based on their personal experience with the few SSHL patients they had cared for. Most people seem to think there is a primary recovery time & a longer term recover time.
Avatar m tn She is doing pretty good with her recovery but we have notice her drastic personality changes. It's almost like having a visitor in the house and not the sweet and loving lap dog we have had for 6 years. Has anyone else had this happen?
Avatar n tn If the damage is severe, recovery may not occur at all. I do not know the incidence of infarcts affecting the brain in dogs but I think it is pretty low. Even when dogs do not recover fully from peripheral vestibular syndrome they normally have a good life. They adjust to residual problems like head tilts and do not seem all that bothered by them.
16887106 tn?1452146691 She is doing very well in her recovery from what you describe. Dogs are amazing! I am afraid I can't think of any suggestions you haven't tried. Let's hope someone else here will have more ideas. My first thought -doggy diapers.....well that one wasn't such a great idea.... My dog had a brief period of incontinence due to early stage kidney failure. Otherwise she was well and happy at the time, but used to bed-wet for a few weeks until her medication and new diet kicked in.
Avatar n tn Until this month in April 2016 I notice he was getting worse. It's crazy how one day dogs are fine but can go down hill so fast. Restless in the middle of the night, couldn't stand still kept walking around, coughing so bad he was gagging, staining and if he poop sometimes he would had a mini sezuire or passed out, and his regualr sezuires were getting worse. We increased his meds but after a while he didn't want them.
Avatar f tn No way to tell for sure unless you take him to the Vet for an evaluation. He certainly might be in pain. With some dogs being so stoic, it can be hard to tell. You know your dog best and your decisions to make. I would limit his activities like no jumping or going up and down stairs. Hope he improves. Please keep us updated.

82861 tn?1333457511 We took Mom to the ER Saturday night as she was in extreme back and leg pain. She couldn't even stand to go to the bathroom, feed herself or dress herself. The day before she was positively diagnosed with blood in her stool. We had to pull a whole lot of strings to get her admitted as nobody believed she was sick enough for admission. All hell broke loose when they got the intial blood work in. Mom's hemoglobin was a 6. Yes, a six. That's not a typo.
Avatar f tn I take phenergan myself for constant nausea, and discovered late in the game that dogs can also take phenergan. It didn't work quite as well as the reglan, but at that point we tried anything we could get our hands on. Over the counter Dramamine for motion sickness can be tried as it is metabolized in the liver - got that info from an ER vet nearby.
182493 tn?1348056515 after 12 years in 12 step recovery i hurt my back badly, after 1.5 years of discomfort a friend gave me a pill, it took all the discmofort away, i started buying pills, 3 years later (lots of chiropractic) i figured my back was well enuf to stop taking the pillsso i did, over 3 weeks of horrible withdrawls later im now fully aware again about how cunning baffleing powerful and patient my disease is.
Avatar f tn This test is the only way of ensuring the right antibiotic is identified for the particular strain of UTI ... if indeed there is a UTI (quite common in kd dogs). Giving generic antibiotics (which is what many vets do) is pointless, as the antibiotic may not be the right one for the job and the UTI will consequently just return again and again. You might also ask to receive copies of all the blood and urine testing that has been (and will be) undertaken.
Avatar f tn He told me that the loss of use of the right hand/arm was definetely a stroke in his opinion - based on what he sees. I told him that I thought I had this problem beat, as I had not had an episode for 7 months. He replied by telling me that he looked at my charts and noticed that I started aspirin therapy apx. 7 months ago and he feels that this is what kept the problem at bay.
Avatar n tn I too am having this strange wet, warm sensation on my inner left thigh. It's been going on for the last month or so. It will happen somtimes only a few times a day or as much as 3 or 4 times an hour and lasts only few seconds. As best as I can determine it doesn't happen while I'm sleeping. SO....I did some checking and as many have already mentioned, this symptom can sometimes mean a potential blood clot.
Avatar n tn Left untreated, a magnesium deficiency can lead to more life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and others. Magnesium's role in energy production. One of the primary roles of magnesium is to activate the adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy storage molecule, to create and store energy. Without energy, there is no life. Magnesium's role in relaxing muscles.
654560 tn?1331858181 Well this afternoon he attempted sucide for the third time in 3 years.I don't know how much more my family can take, sometimes as much as I love him I sometimes whish he would be successful to put a end to his misery.
4522800 tn?1470329434 I can not take loosing my Dogs yet nor My Family. I have almost 11 months put behind me and I am too early in my Recovery to take any emotional stress like Death!!! The Vet did call back and is going to try a antinflammatory on him just in case it is pain related. I had to really sit there at the River and Talk to my God. I know I must keep up the Faith but sometimes the Beast will be looking in the Window. I KNOW WE ALL have our issue in life and sometimes it is just to much.
Avatar m tn I know dog strokes are rare, and even rarer in dogs who are only 5yrs old, and usually dogs can still walk after a stroke, but ours is in this state. The vet seems to think if she doesn't start showing improvement in the next few days, she will likely never walk again. Yet, I read a lot of stories online about how sometimes dogs take several weeks and even a month to recover walking. We plan to not give up on her at all for awhile if she doesn't improve in next few days...
363281 tn?1518219421 I live in a very small town, so, I have to go 25 to 50 miles to one that has more vets,so, I went back to the town where I used to live for the second vet, but, again, all they would say, (I saw two in that office), was, it was a brain tumor or stroke, they ran no tests, but blood work, which came back outstanding, and that was it. I am on a very fixed income as I have health issue too, but, I would have been able to pay for at least one test.
