Common Questions and Answers about Sleep apnea and weight

Avatar n tn I have asthma and sleep apnea i would like to know if the asthma cause the sleep apnea and how.
Avatar f tn Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours. It would be best to see a sleep specialist for proper management and to ease your worries. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn You need to find out if you have sleep apnea or not. Its important. If you have sleep apnea, you literally stop breathing in your sleep. There is a high risk you will not start breathing again on your own. Do a sleep study at home and if you do have it, its important you let yourself get use to wearing the mask. It took me approx a month. Get on this issue. Its worth it!!
612551 tn?1450022175 The pillow was found to be an effective and easily used treatment for mild (respiratory disturbance index [RDI] 5 to 19) and moderate (RDI 20 to 40) obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. In turn it helped to increase the REM stage of sleep and increased oxygen saturations. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn ) I have occasionally gone through stages where I have gotten sleepy driving for a few days straight and wonder whether I could have had sleep apnea therefore for longer than two years but no one noticed? This has not happened for a while though. Thanks for any ideas. I am a little nervous of the idea of having to use anything mechanical to treat this possible ailment.
Avatar m tn So, you could have obstructive sleep apnea and this is diagnosed with a sleep study. As you wait for your evaluation, you could avoid taking alcohol and quit smoking and try to sleep on your side as this keeps the airways patent. If any nasal blocks try to keep them patent with OTC nasal decongestants. And aim for optimum weight with exercises or long walks. Good Luck. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn t have to be overweight or be male to have significant sleep apnea. Young, thin women can have severe sleep apnea. Ultimately, it's an anatomic issue, and weight gain comes in much later. She should undergo a sleep study.
Avatar n tn They are effective for mild to moderate sleep apnea and are relatively easy to use. Side effects include soreness, nausea or some damage to the position of the jaw, and teeth. You should consult a trained dental professional that specializes in sleep apnea or orthodontist to fit these devices. A regular follow-up is needed to prevent any side effects. http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/what_dental_devices_used_treat_sleep_apnea_000065_9.htm http://www.helpguide.org/life/sleep_apnea.
Avatar n tn My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea in spite of being muscular and trim. He has not been able to adjust to the cpap at all. Lately he has been exhausted, often headachy, feeling a bit light headed at times and over all unmotivated. He has been able to keep pushing through at work because he was raised on a farm where work is done regardless of how you feel. I recently learned that hypothyroidism can cause sleep apnea. Is this true? What step would you take next?
Avatar n tn Your title mentions sleep apnea - have you been diagnosed or are you asking if sleep apnea can cause elevated blood pressure? Yes, untreated sleep apnea can cause elevated BP. Often sleep apnea is worst when sleeping on the back, so that could explain your BP being less when side sleeping. If you haven't hadn't a sleep study, it may be a good idea. Sleep apnea stresses the heart, which none of us need.
Avatar f tn Hi, welcome to the forum, firstly you need to rule out the cause of sleep apnea. Obesity and upper airway soft tissue abnormalities are known risk factor and smoking multiplies the risk by 3 times. Even alcoholism, nasal congestion, craniofacial abnormalities, hypothyroidism, acromegaly, and adenotonsillar hypertrophy can lead to such symptoms. Hence, the above mentioned conditions should be ruled out by physical examinations, thyroid profile and other blood tests.
Avatar f tn Hi, Dr Carolyn Dean talks about sleep apnea and Magnesium supplementation . If you google : Magnesium and sleep Apnea. I have family members who also refuses to use CPAP, so they are trying Mg instead. Still at the starting stage. But what I could tell you is that snoring is definitely less.. :) Sleep apnea causes high BP, memory loss, headaches, poor concentration, fatigue and so many more.. So I'd say, give Mg Glycinate a try..
Avatar f tn Like twistednurse, treating my sleep apnea has made a big difference in my quality of life. Please consider that many of your other issues could stem from the sleep apnea. Lack of oxygen to the brain during apnea has to do strange things to the brain. I had nightmares all the time before treating my apnea, now I rarely ever have a bad dream. Waking up a lot - common with sleep apnea. Weight gain - common with the sleep deprived.
Avatar n tn As the air way collapses the lungs do not have air entry leading to deoxygenation (decreased oxygen) of blood and the person wakes up. This period of non entry of air is called ‘Apneaand the waking up is called an ‘Arousal’. This keeps alternating and the person may not actually wake up all the time, but these repeated arousals can disturb the sleep architecture and cause fatigue, headaches and daytime sleepiness. These people are also more prone for Hypertension.
1174003 tn?1308160819 The nurse would wake me up and everything would be fine. The doctor said I had sleep apnea. I am unsure about that my understanding of sleep apnea was the body waking itself up due to lack of oxygen. Granted I didn't go to medical school. My question is do you agree with the ER doctor my O2 stats dropping that low when I sleep is a sign of sleep apnea? I was not flat when I would fall asleep the bed was propped and I was on my back. Typically I do sleep on my side.
1615999 tn?1307461942 s sleep was much like you describe, but it was back before sleep apnea was even on the radar. Sometimes longstanding sleep apnea can cause changes to the heart that might be evident on autopsy, but is not always the case. Sleep apnea does increase risk of a cardiac event or a stroke when the oxygen levels drop in the blood due to lack of air intake for which the heart tries to compensate. Big stress on the body.
Avatar m tn Best solution to CPAP problems with severe obstructive sleep apnea has been for me switching sides sleep on, and never sleeping on back with arms straight out to side (asphyxiation of JC). Works for me, just a suggestion. I sleep with 'mask' on R side then L side to sleep. Adjusting 'mask' is most important thing. Happy sleeping and breathing at night.
Avatar f tn Your heart doctor should talk to your sleep doctor. Even mild sleep apnea should be treated. They've shown that even stopping breathing once every hour is more dangerous than none at all. The official cut off for sleep apnea is 5 apneas or hypopneas every hour. These are total or partial breathing pauses that last 10 seconds or greater. If you've gained weight, it's possible that your sleep apnea is now worse.
Avatar m tn I have sleep apnea and was tested at a sleep center. I use a c-pap machine and it controls the apnea. I am still very sleepy during the day and have hyper-somnia (excessive daytime sleepyness) So while the apnea is under control, I still suffer. The sleep center doctors handle all of this for me, not my regular doctor, Do you go to a sleep center? I have Chiari 11mm but the NS never says anthing about the coralation. It sounds like you need a new doctor or a second opinion.
Avatar m tn Hello, Changes in testosterone levels occur naturally during sleep, both in men and women. Testosterone levels rise during sleep and decrease during waking hours. Studies have shown that low testosterone levels frequently occur in men with obstructive sleep apnea. Treating obstructive sleep apnea should improve the levels of testosterone but other causes of low testosterone also need to e ruled out.
Avatar m tn Have you had a sleep study? Losing weight and being treated for sleep apnea is not an either/or proposition. If you lost the weight there is a chance you wouldn't need treatment (no guarantee, just a chance), and treatment is designed for those with it, not without it. If a doctor told you you had to lose weight BEFORE being treated, you need a different doctor. If you have SA, being treated while whatever efforts to lose weight are taking place is important.
