simvastatin side effects weight gain

was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?

I would recommend asking your Dr or pharmacist if these are possible side effects. There could be another reason why you're gaining weight and your BP is up. You should'nt have any side effects from stopping this med but, your Dr put you on it for a reason. I take it you had high cholesterol numbers? See your Dr before you quit taking it. The weight gaining effect of this drug will not persist after discontinuation. Any associated condition should be looked for. If there is a change in voice (Voice becomes dusky), weight gain, intolerance to cold etc. You need to get your T3, t4 and TSH level checked as it may be in initial phase.

It also makes me tired which I can handle that one but not the weight gain, I have had problems with my back in the past and when I put on weight my back hurts. You might discuss changing drugs with your Oncologist as there are others available but keep in mind that they all have similar side effecfts even though you mjight not experience them to the same degree. The Dr gave me Effexor which knocked me out for 3 days, slept 36 hours straight, then Celexa which I broke out in a rash all over my body from. He tried Wellbutrin but that did nothing. I didn't lose weight on it like some people do.

Have you been on Simvastatin long? Side effects normally do not start after 90 days of use. Your other drugs may be causing the problem, especially the Neurontin which has concentration problems as a main side effect which can get worse the longer you take it. If you feel it is the Simvastatin, you can always ask your doctor about going off of it for a short while to see if it improves. This is a rare side effect of Simvastatin so I would look elsewhere for the problem.
