I have been taking Lipitor (20mg) and my wife has been taking Simvastatin. Prior to being put on medication, my cholesterol had been running about 205 for a long time and my wife's had been around 160. What is the difference betwen the two? My medication is considerably higher than mine? Can you explain why? My blood sugar was running abot 137 so my Doctor also put me on Actoplus as well. My Lipitor is about $100 and my wife's Simvastatin is about $6 (same quantity of tables-30).
There are all kinds of statins out there, as ed said, you have to find out which one you tolerate. I have been on them for many years as I was unable to lower my LDL with diet and exercise alone. They have worked well and I have had no side effects, but everyone is different. Most of these can be replaced by the generic Simvastatin. It's cheap and is the basis of many of the meds out there.
I took lipitor for twenty years without problems until menopause and the dose was raised from ten to twenty mg. I have gone off and on all statin drugs and recently have been trying generic liptor. I have muscle aches again and headaches this time. Is there anything esle besides statins I can try? I have lost twenty-five pounds and my cholesterol has gone from338 to 228. I think that the lipitor is making me very uncomfortable and that I really can not tolerate it.
Actually, Lipitor is much stronger than Simvastatin and has a much higher incidence of side effects, unless I have missed some new data. According to the links I have Simvastatin is the safest statin on the market.
was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
We have been on simvastatin for (wife for 1+ years, me for 2+ years) and stopped about 5-6 months ago - wife still having pains in the butt some dizziness and leg pain, but getting better - I am having butt pain and leg pains, swollen left knee, (but joint pain seems OK on stairs), recovery seems slower than my wife's. But both of us have just been diagnosed with right enlarged renal cysts which were not there before taking simvastatin.

I m at present on Erythromycin for sore throat and as it interact with simvastatin the dr has asked to stop taking it until I complete the course of antibiotic.
I have been taking Simvastatin 20mg for about 2 years, but recently my bad cholesterol has gotten very high to where it is elevated. Now, I admit to not being consistent lately with taking my medication; could this be the cause for my cholesterol to skyrocket?
so he did this to equal things out she said,,he put me on 20 mg simvastatin,and he does know Im on 2 medicaton for hypothyroid...i dont know how good my dr is..some speak high of him others not. So Im still confused since u said he would not do that . Thanks!

In my experience the Adco-Simvistatim is not a good Statin - not as strong as the original: Lipitor. I also have familial-high-cholestorol and have been on Lipitor since my early 20's and for the past 6 years I was on 20-40-60mg Nexium.
The 6 months that I was on Simvistatim, my Trigs went up and when I changed to Lipitor, my levels came down and is still under control.
Just check your levels again in about 3 months, but try to get Lipitor/Aspavor instead.
does anyone know if its normal when switching statins for the alt ast numbers to spike or is this a sign of body rejecting new statin? was on liptor 20 but not liking it so two weeks ago started simvastatin 30 to see if more tolerable b/c my research said it had the lowest rate of side effects of the potent statins. numbers were normal on 20 lipitor but are now alt 68 ast 54.
Dr had changed from Lipitor (generic) to Pravastatin 40 mg, but still horrible muscle pain. Dr wants to put on another statin( saying this has less side effects) and extremly expensive...But I would like to try a Non Statin is there is one on the market, or would there be supplements that are available and have good results?
Mainly I would like names of non statins to research and discuss.
I am wondering if anyone has taken simvastatin, the generic brand for Zocor. I just started taking this on Friday and twice since then I seem to have had some strange side effects. It has caused an upset stomach and then made me feel very jittery. It was almost as if I had the chills and then both nights had a horrible time sleeping. The only similar item I ate or drank was Diet Cranberry Soda. I am not sure if this would have had an impact. Any insight would be great.
You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with Lipitor. Especially telling if there are muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, and if your husband also has a fever or feel more tired than usual.
I was on Lipitor, but went on Simvastatin 20mg (much less expensive, too) and the results have been very good. Recent blood test shows LDL 45 and HDL 58, trig 55 and chol 114.

Cholesterol levels maintained until June 2008? You could consider going for a higher dose of Lipitor, another way to go is to consider taking a drug that limits cholesterol absorption such as Ezetimibe. There is a combination drug Simvastatin and ezetimibe that may be better in controlling cholesterol. Discuss these drugs with your doctor.

I was originally on Simvastatin 20mg at night for a few years but I have missed here and there. my Dr changed me to Lipitor 40mg the other statin medication and since starting it one night ago, I've experienced some pain in my chest...not so much on the right side.
is this normal?
My bad cholesterol was evelevated which is why I was changed. but can't I just exercise or does taking the medication have to happen to bring it down?
