649848 tn?1534633700 56 L Over the past 5 years, my fasting glucose levels have ranged from around 97 or 98 all the way up to 125, but never over 125. My A1c has ranged from 5.5 to 5.8 over the same period and my doctor has said I'm pre-diabetic. Insulin levels have only been measured a couple of times. The last time it was measured blood glucose was 125, with insulin at 8.1. Blood glucose was considered to be in pre-diabetic range, while insulin level was considered to be normal.
Avatar n tn In people without diabetes, hypoglycemia can result from the body producing too much insulin after a meal, causing blood sugar levels to drop. This is called reactive hypoglycemia. Reactive hypoglycemia can be an early sign of diabetes. https://www.diabetes.
Avatar n tn Today about 20 minutes after my lunch I started sweating, feeling weak, heart racing, etc. I checked my blood sugar and it was 71 after eating a chicken salad, salad. I checked it before eating and it was 77 so why would it go down after eating a salad and a few wheat crackers? 71 is normal but again I felt horrible, weak, shaky, anxiety, etc. Could this be something other than Hypoglycemia? Before I had lunch I ran 2.5 miles on the treatmill and felt fine so this is beginning to puzzle me.
Avatar n tn A year ago I had normal blood sugar levels. Recently I have been suffering from anxiety attacks and light headedness. Done a fasting blood sugar test and it seems I have high blood sugar levels. Than this be the result of my anxiety attacks This discussion is related to Mysteriously high fasting blood glucose.
Avatar m tn Today I ate a breakfast burrito and had orange juice. My blood glucose was 92 thirty minutes after eating. Sometimes it will fall in the 60 range. My fasting blood glucose level was around 80. It seems like my body overcompensates when I consume sugar. Do you think I have reactive hypoglycemia?
Avatar f tn My husband has has Type II diabetes for 16 years and his blood sugar levels are checked with blood tests. This is what the Blood Glucose Meters do, they measure your blood sugar level by you nicking your finger and getting a drop of blood into the meter, which then shows them a number. I'm sure you've seen these on TV, but you don't need one unless you are diagnosed with diabetes.
Avatar f tn Well, as reactive hypoglycemia tends to occur after eating high-carb meals due to the fast spike and then crash of blood sugar, I would focus eating foods that do not cause this. Stay away from heavily processed starches (pastas, cereals, breads) and get your carbs from healthy sources like sweet potatoes, spinach, peppers, and other vegetables. A white rice or quinoa would be alright in small amounts and in moderation.
Avatar n tn I have been seeing an endocrinologist because I am constantly having low blood sugar readings and have had a high fasting blood glucose test of 8.3. My endocrinologist feels this may be due to my dysautonomia. She thought maybe reactive hypoglycemia because I am having low fasting glucose levels as well as high. I went for a 2hr OGTT today and I am feeling horrible after the test. My baseline was 4.8 @ 8:55 Given 75g of glucose to drink At 4.3 @ 9:25 At 4.8 @ 9:55 At 6.2 @ 10:25 At 6.
Avatar f tn Without proper testing results one assumption is you experienced reactive hypoglycemia. Reactive hypoglycemia [or alimentary hypoglycemia] is low glucose [blood sugar] that occurs after a meal — usually one to three hours after eating. Try the following: • Eat several small meals and snacks throughout the day, no more than three hours apart. • Eat a well-balanced diet including lean and nonmeat sources of protein and high-fiber foods including whole grains, fruit and vegetables.
Avatar f tn What you are experiencing is called reactive hypoglycemia [or alimentary hypoglycemia] which is low glucose that occurs after a meal — usually one to three hours after eating. What also can be happening is a carb crash caused by eating mashed potatoes and buger bun [white bread]. Eating a meal laden with high carbs can cause your pancreas to kick into overdrive to produce insulin to counteract the onset of sugar from the foods you just consumed. That rush of insulin now creates a yo-yo effect.
Avatar f tn I have hypotension, as well, and have similar episodes. I also have an issue with blood glucose levels that drop (hypoglycemia) and recover quickly. Both of these issues can produce, what's similar to a hot flash with a "buzz", but it usually only lasts a short time, unless I go into a full hypoglycemic attack, which is totally different. I doubt you'd be going from hypo to hyper that quickly, but I'm the last person to say anything is impossible.
Avatar f tn When you say "I take my 15mcg cytomel 2 in AM and 1 Mid Afternoon", I assume you mean 2 - 5 mcg tablets in the morning and 1 5 mcg tablet Mid-afternoon, is that correct? Have you tried splitting the pills evenly so you're getting 7.5 mcg at each dose? Or take your afternoon dose closer to noon instead of midafternoon?
Avatar f tn Because an A1c averages blood glucose levels for the previous 3 months, your blood glucose levels have to be going high quite often to get that high an A1c; apparently, you aren't catching them.
Avatar m tn How could you say he had hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia without knowing what the blood sugars are. He did state that they were in normal range. Palpitations may not even be related to blood sugar.
Avatar n tn I had a CABG done 3 months back and lost about 7kgs. my Post prandial glucose levels were still on the higher side 175-190mg/dl and the Dr has increased my medication by 1 additional tabletof Metformin. NOw i take 3 tablets of 500mg. Before the surgery, i used to feel very hungry 2 hrs after breakfast this is quite normal. Therefore he has advised me to carry a candy or biscuits which is handy and taken everytime i got this hunger feeling or shakiness.
Avatar n tn The other term for Reactive Hypoglycemia is postprandial hypoglycemia. It is no longer diagnosed using the glucose tolerance test due to the number of severe reactions. I hope this helps.
Avatar n tn I have a problem which has been going on for several years and I can't seem to get to the bottom of it. I'm 38 years old and have the following symptoms - an occasional feeling of fatigue in the center of my chest, in my arms and in my legs. It's not a weakness because I still have all my strength. It feels more like a fatigue or cold rubbery sensation. I also notice a slight trembling and twitching in my fingers and thumb.
Avatar n tn Have you heard of insulin resistance? This may be partially to blame for hypoglycemia if it is "rebound", meaning her blood sugars may not sharply exceed the high levels, but if she eats a heavy meal -especially one high in simple carbohydrates- several hours later it "crashes" giving her hypoglycemia. It was explained to me that the insulin triggers becomes overreactive and dump a large amount of insulin in response to the free sugars in her system.
Avatar n tn on a Saturday. I had eaten breakfast only about an hour before, maybe up to two hours. My blood glucose was 61. I guess I have two questions. The first is whether I should get tested for anything like adrenal deficiencies or something else? The second pertains to diet. The advice I've gotten from those close to me is to eat protein, try to limit carbs, definitely keep sugar intake as low as possible.
Avatar m tn 7 The 3-Hour was flagged as hypoglycemic and the pattern seems to be consistent with reactive hypoglycemia. Although insulin levels were never extraordinarily high, the increase between the 2nd and 3rd hours seems to be abnormal and indicative of delayed insulin response, a pattern associated with insulin resistance. Several years ago I had elevated cortisol throughout the day. Last year, is was below range for most of the day.
Avatar n tn ve been researching reactive hypoglycemia as well. I recently had an OGTT w/insulin check and my two hr glucose dropped to 55 (from 66 at the 1hr). Anyway, the 55 was flagged as being low. Now, what occurred with you could be totally normal, I don't know...I don't want to freak you out with my next statement because it might not apply, but I have read that reactive hypoglycemia *can be* associated with hypothyroidism and adrenal issues.
Avatar f tn You have what’s known as reactive hypoglycemia. That’s when your glucose levels spike, then crash. I have that as well. Treatment is pretty much the same as for pre-diabetes - eat regular small meals and avoid foods that drive glucose levels high, such as sweets, high carbs, etc.
Avatar m tn 3-4 hours after meals, or when I'm hungry, I frequently get symptoms such as irritation, heart palpitations, asthma like symptoms feeling like I can't take deep breaths, extreme hunger... most of them go away as soon as I eat something. Now sounds like hypoglycemia (reactive or whatever) but when I check my blood glucose, it is around 100 a bit more which means it's not hypoglycemia. . What else may be causing this? My docs say it's not asthma.
Avatar n tn When reading your comments, it occurred to me that your symptoms, including the slightly low glucose reading on your glucose tolerance test sound more like hypoglycemia than diabetes. Hypoglycemia means that your blood sugar is too LOW, not high (diabetes).
Avatar f tn This test shows more accurate responses if the person seems to react strongly to eating sweet foods -- called reactive hypoglycemia. If the hypoglycemia is not triggered by eating high-glycemic index foods, it may very well come back normal. But again, it WILL show up any diabetic tendencies.
Avatar f tn I had another question I meant to add to my last post. I was put on Metformin when found out I had Insulin resistant Reactive Hypoglycemia. I took for a month & noticed there was no refill. I called nurse & was told they wanted to make sure I was not Diabetic. My question.......what symptoms would I have on Metformin that would be a sign of that & not Hypoglycemia. When I did my glucose test .....think I was tested 5 times....first was 166 and last 44.
