My husband has has Type II diabetes for 16 years and his blood sugar levels are checked with blood tests. This is what the Blood Glucose Meters do, they measure your blood sugar level by you nicking your finger and getting a drop of blood into the meter, which then shows them a number. I'm sure you've seen these on TV, but you don't need one unless you are diagnosed with diabetes.

Hello, I've had both extreme symptoms of hypoglycemia (chills, intense hunger, rapid heartbeat, etc) and type 2 diabetes (frequent urination, thirst, rashes, fatigue) and have had several blood tests done but haven't been diagnosed with either. Ok. I just recently found out that I'm hypoglycemic. I have a pretty good primary Doctor. But I want a second opinion. She said that with my hypoglycemia, I have the symptoms, but don't need medicine for it, I just need to eat every 2 to 3 hours. So, is that right? When your body is battling an infection, stress hormones are released, and it is possible, I suppose, that your body is just not functioning at its best right now. Hi, You did not say in your post if you had been evaluated by a physician or if you were ever diagnosed as a diabetic. For many people a blood glucose in the 80s except following a meal or other food/drink intake is normal.

For some people, Metformin can cause glucose [blood sugar] levels to drop too low [hypoglycemia]. This often times happens when Metformin is combined with other diabetes medications, and is more common in elderly folks or folks with internal organ issues. Low glucose also can happen when fasting before surgery or a blood test/s and after lengthy exercise. You should notify your doctor of your low glucose experiences ASAP. Ask your doctor how to adjust your Metformin dose if needed.

With a glucose test, your blood is taken when you have fasted for over 8 hours. You are given a glucose drink and then the blood is taken again after a while and examined again.
