I checked it before eating and it was 77 so why would it go down after eating a salad and a few wheat crackers? 71 is normal but again I felt horrible, weak, shaky, anxiety, etc. Could this be something other than Hypoglycemia? Before I had lunch I ran 2.5 miles on the treatmill and felt fine so this is beginning to puzzle me.
Avatar n tn That is rare, for in most cases, the person feels crummy for a while, but the body eventually regulates the sugar levels. During a hypo episode (as a type 1 diabetic, of course I have occasionally overdosed by accident when my insulin didn't properly match the food carbs I ate), the eyes feel dry and vision CAN change temporarily.

Every person's sensitivity level is different and therefore where one person may remain conscious at a level of 50, another may encounter a seizure at that same level. Avatar f tn If it is reactive hypoglycemia the intake of sugar will depress blood sugar further. In the other type an intake of sugar will raise blood sugar. The latter would explain why the intake of sugar helps you. I hope other people on this forum can explain it better, since my knowledge is sketchy. I have reactive hypoglycemia.

This often times happens when Metformin is combined with other diabetes medications, and is more common in elderly folks or folks with internal organ issues. My hypoglycemia strikes with no warning many times throughout the day, even as soon as an hour after my meals. I have to carry glucose tablets and orange juice with me at all times. The nutritionsts then changed my diet so that it was double portion sizes and everything read perfectly. This may be partially to blame for hypoglycemia if it is "rebound", meaning her blood sugars may not sharply exceed the high levels, but if she eats a heavy meal -especially one high in simple carbohydrates- several hours later it "crashes" giving her hypoglycemia. It was explained to me that the insulin triggers becomes overreactive and dump a large amount of insulin in response to the free sugars in her system.

Those initial signs - the shakiness, the disconnecting feeling (almost dream-like disconnect) sometimes cold sweat, etc, can result from other things as well.

Avatar f tn Well, as reactive hypoglycemia tends to occur after eating high-carb meals due to the fast spike and then crash of blood sugar, I would focus eating foods that do not cause this. Stay away from heavily processed starches (pastas, cereals, breads) and get your carbs from healthy sources like sweet potatoes, spinach, peppers, and other vegetables. A white rice or quinoa would be alright in small amounts and in moderation.
Avatar f tn The only odd thing is that I was given a glucagon injection to recover my sugar, and it was expected to bring up my blood sugar significantly, and it only came up 6 points by serum blood testing in 30 minutes. No one could explain that. I continued to suffer with what appeared to be reactive hypoglycemia, no matter how low carb or mixed my meals were. Eventually it seemed to just come under control even though I did nothing different. My fasting blood sugars are always normal, from 77-85.

It will be best if you can actually check your blood sugar during one of these episodes (or even during longer period of not eating) to see if your sugars are going low. Normal blood sugars are typically in the range of about 70 - 90 all the time. Quality blood sugar meter and strips can be bought quite cheaply at wallmart, I understand (I am not in US). If you do find that your blood sugar is going low, it will be a good idea to get this evaluated.
