Propranolol for varices

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for varices

Avatar m tn I do take nadolol, and have had the varices repeatedly scoped and banded. Each time I returned for treatment, the varices were less in number and smaller in size, and at my last scope, there were no varices. I lift enough weight so that I can do a set of 12 without gettting to the point of vomiting (as JJ said). Did the doc recommend another scoping and banding if needed? I think I'd wait for them to clear up a bit before getting back into a lifting routine.
29837 tn?1414534648 I have been on Atenolol for many years . Not for my Liver or Varcies. I take it for heart arrithmia. I am up to 200mg a day. I did have to go off of it to get a dobutomine stress echo. That was very uncomfortable for a few day feeling my heart beat irradically. The test was shear torchure I will never have it done again. The reason they do the endoscopy or pill cam is to find out if you have varcies or any type of problems due to acid reflux or stomach ulcers.

He said I may be able to find someone who could but he wouldnt do it. can anyone who has been thru this let me know what they have done and what has helped. I have no hepatic encephalopathy or ascites. just this darn bleeding after many bms. I always make sure my vitals are normal and that I am not dizzy or nauseous. seeing so much blood is scary. I am on propranolol.
89592 tn?1391274422 I was dxd in 2012 with cirrhosis after the previous gastro found 2 grade 2 non bldg varices. I am on 100 mgs propranolol am and 100 mgs propranolol pm. Now I have a new gastro who has mentioned scheduling an egd and suggested if have varices, he would like to band them. My last EGD was done in 2012. I have rheum arth along with sjogrens which does a number on my throat anyway along with the other overlapping r/a issues. I have not had anything that would indicate a bleed.
Avatar f tn A friend of mine took a propranolol overdose approx. 1 month ago. 3 weeks after had a physical and his enzymes were elevated alkaline phosphatase 201 ast- 52 alt- 115. What does this mean? His MD gave him a B12 injection and a script for folate. He has not revealed to his MD that he had taken this overdose. He is going for a follow-up tomorrow and tell the doctor. He does not drink and has never taken drugs, untilt his event.
2203249 tn?1338990446 In our practice, primary prophylaxis for bleeding has often been reserved for high-risk patients who have small varices and for all patients with large varices. The primary pharmacologic strategy for preventing variceal hemorrhage is use of nonselective beta blockers, particularly propranolol and nadolol. These medications reduce portal pressures both by decreasing cardiac output and by producing splanchnic vasoconstriction.
89592 tn?1391274422 My egd did see some grade 2 non bleeding varices on my last scope in 2012 He did not give me any meds for them...my bp usually runs on the lower side. I've had low bp since I was young. Thanks in advance...
Avatar f tn My husband had his has had banning because of portal hypertension twice in early 2011, Then on may 13, 2011 he had a bleed out, he was on life support for 5 days and in hospital for 20 days, He has had bleeding nose, bruising, vomiting, cancer of the liver which they burn with a probe, He has been on the transplant list for almost 4 years, His meld is 17, He has ESLD but is sicker than his meld score, Because your husband has had portal hypertension he has to be careful of bleed outs, If that ev
1008841 tn?1293598960 So you are already taking 10mg of propranolol for your portal hypertension caused by your portal vein thrombosis (PVT). Propranolol is the most commonly used drug for portal vein obstruction. Combined with endoscopic banding treatment they are the standard first line of treatment. Do you know why she don't just increase the dosage? Now she wants to add another beta blocker in addition to propranolol? Has your doc talked to you about anticoagulation therapy?
Avatar f tn How to slowly decrease dosage of carvedilol used to stop/prevent more esophageal varices? I took 6.25 tablet twice a day for 10 days and heart bpm was really low at 39. My uppuer cheekbones swollen (eyes appear sunken), so I then reduced dosage to 5 mg twice a day for 8 days BUT HEART RATE is STILL 39 bpm. Yesterday I again reduced dosage to 3.125 mg twice a day. They want my heart rate to be around 60 bpm as the goal. QUESTION: 1.
Avatar f tn If the varices are significant enough cause you to be at risk for bleeding, doctors can perform a procedure called banding to prevent the varices from rupturing. Doctors should not be waiting for a bleeding episode before treating. If you have been diagnosed with varices, you should be speaking with a GI or hepatologist about management. Good luck.
Avatar m tn For a "nice" extensive treatment" of varices size, color, mortality, tec. whose pics some may find offensive. Maybe this will help make people treat before progressing to cirrhosis! ;-) (Not to be viewed while eating!). Avatar n tn sometimes Tenex is also used in conjunction with stimulants to help control ADHD symptoms....first I have heard of inderal (brand name for propranolol) being used but makes sense...Always to remember to ask your doctor any questions about your meds and health care...the only stupid questions are the ones not asked....Also beta blockers are also given to help control migraines to regulate fluxs in BP...not because too high but slight changes can trigger migraines...
3097131 tn?1357084881 When varices are classified in 3 sizes—small, medium, or large—as occurs in most centers by a semiquantitative morphological assessment (with small varices generally defined as minimally elevated veins above the esophageal mucosal surface, medium varices defined as tortuous veins occupying less than one-third of the esophageal lumen, and large varices defined as those occupying more than one-third of the esophageal lumen), recommendations for mediumsized varices are the same as for large varices, b
1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
Avatar f tn I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years. Shrink says very occasional and use of propranolol on top of pindolol should not be a problem but I still have concerns which I will run by my GP. I actually did receive a call from my pharmacy pointing out the risk of a low BP problem. So...I am wondering if anyone has used propranolol or has an educated opinion on both its use in ED and possible interactions.
89592 tn?1391274422 I have had more rectal bleeding from rectal varices. I saw a colorectal surgeon and he doesnt want to do anything for risk of infection. The gastro hep suggested wearing a DEPENDS and living with it as it is..bleeding alot after lots of bms...or getting TIPS done. It seems to me that Tips is risky. I guess my rectal varices are impressive and I have hems also. I dont know if I want to chance TIPS. my meld is 8...
Avatar f tn Questions for any doctor: 1. What is it exactly, and how is the condition presenting in ME? 2. What are the treatment options, and what are the risks and benefits of each. 3. If your (family member) had this condition, what would you do? Blessings!
Avatar f tn I know propranolol is used for PTSD...but what should I ask for in the pharmacy and what is the dosage? Are there any serious effect if taken without proper knowledge?
Avatar m tn How quickly can someone with hep-c go from no varices to varices? Are varices an indicator as to the stage of cirrhosis?
Avatar m tn Thanks for clarifying for me. With all I went through, somehow I was spared varices.
