Avatar m tn I am assuming you have esophageal varicies due to your portal hypertension and that is why you are taking the beta blocker propranolol to treat your portal hypertension is that correct?
1124887 tn?1313754891 I am already treated with a low dose metoprolol (25 mg) which I assume would lower the blood pressure to some degree. And when I am really stressed I add 5-10 mg or propranolol. My cardiologist gave me both, and he did not care which one of them I used, as long as I did not take more than 100 mg of metoprolol or 160 mg of propranolol. But I tend to get bradycardia if I take more than 25 + 10 mg and it triggers more PACs so I try to be careful. My resting heart rate is 50.
Avatar n tn Non-selective beta-blockers, such as propranolol act on both types of receptors, in both heart and lungs. Propranolol and other medicines in its class are capable of evoking bronchospasm in people with asthma. Metoprolol is selective, but not entirely so; thus, asthma worsens in some people given this “selective” medicine and you may be one of them. Your doctor may have prescribed the metoprolol for both relief of the syncope and treatment of your hypertension.
1008841 tn?1293598960 So you are already taking 10mg of propranolol for your portal hypertension caused by your portal vein thrombosis (PVT). Propranolol is the most commonly used drug for portal vein obstruction. Combined with endoscopic banding treatment they are the standard first line of treatment. Do you know why she don't just increase the dosage? Now she wants to add another beta blocker in addition to propranolol? Has your doc talked to you about anticoagulation therapy?
4155003 tn?1351614311 You need to talk to your doctor before getting out, i try propanolol because doctor said i had hyperthyroid, i took a pill, n discover chest pain, do i stop right away, i went back to the doctor and told her what happen and she dismissed for me to take propanolol and she said my blood work came back normal, i heard if you been taking propanolol for a while is bad to just quit, it can cause worse symptoms, so talk to ur doc, she will recommend lower dose, then she will take u off, if she thinks i
Avatar n tn As Per pubmed The effects of diltiazem hydrochloride, a vasodilator often used to treat hypertension, and beta-blockers (pindolol and propranolol hydrochloride) on lipid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism were assessed by measuring serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density-lipoproteins (HDL)-cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose in patients taking these drugs for three months.
Avatar f tn He does not drink and has never taken drugs, untilt his event. This was not his prescription of propranolol, it was a family memebers. can this be drug induced hepatitis, can it be reversed, or is it usually permanent damage. If in fact this is drug induced hepatitis, does the dmage continue, or did it stop after the drugs were out of his system? Thanks for any help.........
Avatar n tn Without operational intervention, there is no remedy and often no symptoms until or if regurgitation becomes severe. No pulmonary hypertension and heart chambers are normal dimensions is a possitive.
Avatar f tn Hi, i'm 17 weeks pregnant and wondering if it's safe to use beta blockers (Propranolol to be specific) to control my hypertension and anxiety. I stopped during my first trimester which worked out ok but it's to the point now where my anxiety levels are getting way too high for my comfort. Before i was pregnant, I took 20-40mg 3x week which worked out fine. I'd love to hear from others with experience.
1475202 tn?1536270977 However reduction in portal hypertension is possible through the use of nonselective beta blockers, particularly propranolol and Nadolol. These medications reduce portal pressures both by decreasing cardiac output and by producing splanchnic vasoconstriction. Several studies have shown that nonselective beta blockers decrease the risk for first variceal hemorrhage by 40% to 50% when compared to patients taking placebo.
Avatar m tn Hi there, I'm a 24 year old male of relatively good health aside from a hiatal hernia (for which, after discussion with my GI specialist, we agreed that I can take omeprazole as needed), and what I've now discovered, high blood pressure. I am a law student in my final semester. I do think that I experience a lot of stress as a result. My exercise regime has been lacking as of late, and I should pick up regular exercise (and am slowly doing so).
Avatar f tn I will be transitioning to propanolol 20 mg (and hydrochlorothiazide) twice daily soon - my doctor wants me to transition by taking propanolol - 1/2 of 20 mg twice a day for one week and then the full 20 mg twice daily. Why? Won't that cause rebound hypertension? Thanks.
Avatar f tn If any one can help answer my question, I would be so grateful. I have been hospitalized in the ER three times in the past two weeks for bradycardia. All this suddenly started happening in the last two weeks. I start to feel weak, have a seizure, this last time, I fell down on the kitchen floor and hit my head pretty good. I am a 28 yr old female who has been on propranol for almost 4 years. I have a at home blood pressure monitor, that also checks my pulse and I do it religiously.
Avatar m tn This may represent one of the mechanisms by which propranolol is effective in preventing bleeding and rebleeding from varices. However, our findings should not be taken as an invitation to advise physical exercise in portal hypertensive cirrhotic patients receiving propranolol.
19948752 tn?1487604687 s show rbbb with left anterior fascicular block and I have also been diagnosed with having hypertension which I take meds for (Lisinopril, Propranolol and Hydrochlorot). Every once in a while, especially when I am talking or feeling a tad stressed I get a sudden pressure in my temples with a stuffy nose on the left side. I recently had an MRI which was pretty clear (for the most part) and a doppler scan of my carotid arteries which were clear.
Avatar n tn I have and c5/6 disk fusion over 10 years ago and have continual pinched neck nerve pain that I deal with all the time. MRI shows continually bad but surgery not recommended (good). Question - since I can feel when the nerve pinches, it is on right side of neck - any pressure and it gets worse and triggers bad migraines but also swells up the back of neck. I use ice and fiornal to control pain. sleep with ice packs on my neck. can this raise my blood pressure?
Avatar m tn She explained the benefits of Propranolol for anxiety and panic disorder and indeed warned me never to take the two drugs together, i.e. don't take your propranolol and Xanax before bed. My ultimate question is this really necessary? Isn't this much ado about nothing? It is quite clear she is caring and is coming from a great place.
Avatar n tn Almost 8 years ago I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I've been taking beta blockers ever since. Most of the time even with the beta blockers, my blood pressure and heart rate would run high. 140/90 range with the beta blocker even higher without. Well now, for the past 2 weeks or so, it has been running low. I've been taking less and less of my beta blocker (propranolol) over the past few days, my usual dose is 20 mg twice a day.
Avatar m tn My husband who is 47 yrs old had two left cerebellar infarcts and a right occipital infarct 4 years ago. They occurred simultaneously and despite all sorts of testing....they have never found a reason that this happened. They were all considered embolic events. His only medical history up to that point was that he developed migraine headaches a couple of years before the strokes, a history of peptic ulcer disease, and sleep apnea. He was using CPAP prior to the strokes without a problem.
Avatar f tn She said my chest pain, fatigue and SOB was from the pulmonary hypertension and that I need to see a cardiologist stat. Saw a cardiologist today. Before even taking my results out of my hand, the minute I said Pulmary hypertension he rolled his eyes and said “yeah, I doubt that.” Said regurgitation in all the above valves is normal. The heart rates I have could be normal for me, I just a higher one than other people.
Avatar m tn If so an enlarged spleen is a complication that occurs because of the cirrhosis and the resulting portal hypertension. It is a condition that is the result of the cirrhosis and portal hypertension and not a condition of the spleen itself. There is no treatment for an enlarge spleen resulting from cirrhosis. Only when the cirrhosis is reversed can the enlargement of the spleen be resolved.
Avatar f tn I have not undergone an eye examination, but the pediatrician who has been diagnosing my BP and Tachycardia issues suggested that it is likely related. I am now on Propranolol for the BP and heartrate, and this has seemed to lessen the severity of my eye issue. Do you think it is an accurate assumption to make that my other issues are the cause. Note: I'm a 15-year-old male.
Avatar f tn I have a history of migraines for about twenty years. I quit smoking 7 months ago, and started propranolol 20 mg once a day. I gained 30 pounds. My whole body is sore and Im having episodes where my upper body and sometimes legs just feel so heavy and tired I feel like Im going to pass out. Had a Head CT, Head and Neck CTA, CBC, EKG all were normal. Is it related to migraine? ER doctor said it is anxiety. Oh I stopped celexa five months ago because I was extremely fatigued.
Avatar f tn I am a 25 year old female. I have never smoked. I drink maybe 3 times a year. I have been having chest pains over the past couple of hours. It has been a steady pain....(7-7.5 on a scale of 1-10)... I've had a little bit of pain in my shoulder as well...What could be causing this? I am 5'8" and I weigh 260. I do have high blood pressure and asthma, (i take Lisinopril and Albuterol for those).
