Common Questions and Answers about Prometrium oral uses

prometrium

1262373 tn?1281543782 I think what you're talking about is Prometrium. It's more or less Progesterone and is used in women who have a history of miscarriages and can help if you're trying to conceive. There's more uses, but this is the main one I know of.
Avatar f tn Reproductive studies has been performed in mice at doses up to 9 times the human oral dose, in rats up to 44 times the human oral dose, in rabbits at a dose of 10mg/day delivered locally within the uterus by an implanted device, in guinea pigs at approx one half the human oral doseand in Rhesys monkeys at doses approx the human dose, all based on body surface area, and have revealed little or no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to progesterone.
Avatar f tn I switched from a RE in Czech Republic who did my IVF and supplied my progesterone- vaginal suppositories, to a local OBGYN who gave me a further prescription for progesterone in the form of prometrium capsules (the little pink 100mg balls). My prescription says to be taken vaginally, but the info leaflet says to be taken orally. Can you take the same capsule either orally or vaginally as a suppository?
495138 tn?1221217880 I take Prometrium 100mg twice a day, but it is oral. My understanding is that we need to stay on it until the first part of the second trimester to help the baby, and it cant hurt.
Avatar f tn Anyway, I was wondering what your dr said about the prometrium helping you get preggo? I was just wondering what other uses they use prometrium for besides starting periods..
Avatar f tn I took the vaginal prometrium from ovulation until my 10th week of pregnancy. I didn't really have any side effects from it. I had to take it twice a day, so I wore a pantyliner after the morning one to cut down on the mess. Other than that, it was a piece of cake. I'm now 16 weeks pregnant. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Prometrium, a progesterone supplement, is sometimes prescribed during the first trimester of pregnancy in women who have had a history of miscarriages caused by low progesterone levels. The addition of prometruim during pregnancy helps ensure that the women will carry the fetus to full-term. It works by helping ensure that a placenta is fully formed thus providing the necessary lifeline for the developing fetus.
Avatar f tn My RE prescribed prometrium vaginally as well, and when I picked it up at the pharmacy and noticed it's the same as the oral capsules, I asked the pharmacists about it. She said it's totally normal to use it as a suppository. I also had no problems with it coming back out, as I took it right before bed, so it had all night to absorb (then some would come out as I got up in the morning (used a pantyliner)...sorry TMI).
Avatar f tn My RE actually prefers the vaginal suppositories. I believe he uses prometrium...but I think it has to be vaginally, as opposed to orally, since vaginally delivers the progesterone directly where it's needed and doesn't have to go through the entire system before delivering the hormones. Best of luck!
419008 tn?1219536438 I have had 4 miscarriages now (not back to back - I do have 2 little gils 4 and 10mos). Whit my girls I had to be on prometrium because my progesterone levels never went up correctly. I recently had a m/c and I am now in my 1st tww since. My doc has prescribed prometrium to take this time around - (I didn't have enough time to get to docs and stat meds before last m/c).
282955 tn?1394730951 I was on prometrium- one cycle of 100mg/oral/day, next cycle was 200mg/oral/day, and then the third one is when I got pregnant. They had me on prometrium until I was out of my first trimester - at my 13 week appt the dr said I could stop. I was put on prometrium as a preventative measure - I had had two early term miscarriages. I think the dr put me on as a 'just in case' kind of thing.
Avatar f tn Hello I am posting a new queestion. Well, I was too afraid of the oral prometrium and now will start tonight with 200 mg vaginally...I read it can make the side effects close to nothing. I am sooo scared, have panic attacks and anxiety terrible....is this from having low progesterone...will this help me-I am sooo afraid it is going to make me absolutely terrified although I have to or can lose the baby.....
1121273 tn?1325367975 Hi ladies. So, I started prometrium the first day I got a BFP at 10dpo. Ten days later, I had my progesterone level checked and it is 23.7. Is this good considering I am on prometrium? Or should it be higher? Would it be low if I wasn't taking the progesterone supplement? Midwife said she wanted to see it between 20-25 without supplements but I was already taking them when she ordered the test.
Avatar n tn I spoke to my doctor and she switched me from the 100 mg. oral Prometrium to a 50 mg. compounded progesterone cream and I can play with the dose to work for me. I started on a very small amount and I felt much better than with the oral Prometrium. This is tricky business, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
1145751 tn?1262133453 Ok so I got these Prometrium capsules and it states on the package insert that these capsules are oral capsule. My OB's direction is to insert it vaginally as a suppository. Im concerned because the capsules outside gel is pretty thick. I just dont want to keep shoving these things in me and it not dissolve. Has anyone used oral capsules as suppository?
Avatar f tn My friend mhv ported this earlier. Any thoughts on that. I have always wondered if the suppositories affect the eggs and she thinks that prometrium caps are better. Any thoughts about this ladies?

422823 tn?1229736847 t give you any advice, my prometrium is oral. Maybe post on the mail forum because I know several women on here use the suppositories.
1328947 tn?1295011446 i am 7 weeks pregnant and i found out my progesterone level was low so my doc put me on the oral prometrium 200 mg twice a day. im worried about this because i have had 2m/c before and really want things to go right i went today for more blood work but wount get it back till tomorrow. What are my chances of having a healthy pregnancy? has anyone had this happen to them? i dont really get sick, im just sleepy and bloated all the time? someone please give me some advice!
Avatar f tn daily low dose asprin, 100X3 per day prometrium (progesterone supplement), fish oil and prenatal vitamins. I take all except the prometrium even while not pregnant (we plan to try again as soon as possible). I know it's hard, but stay strong and keep believing. I got to the point I never thought it would happen for me, yet here he is. It's scary but just take it one day at a time!
Avatar f tn Oral prometrium made me super dizzy...so just be aware if you have to take it before driving to work or something. If you have the same reaction, you might want to plan it so you won't have to take it when you have to drive (for me, the dizziness would start about an hour after taking the pill). As for your hormone levels, it really shouldn't be a problem to use a supplement, and it could potentially help sustain a pregnancy, so I wouldn't worry about it messing with your hormones.
Avatar n tn I never had my progesterone tested when I was pregnant before I started taking supplements - prometrium 200mg/oral a day. It was prescribed for me after two miscarriages as a 'just in case' kind of thing (testing showed I have a blood clotting issue for which I take baby aspirin). I took the prometrium for the first trimester - and am now 30 weeks pregnant with a future soccer player! Good luck!
1176767 tn?1266188094 I have been taking a vaginal dose of prometrium at night before bed now for about a week . My husband was not too shy to mention to me that on a romantic evening together while having an oral sex moment that I happened to taste different. Has anyone ever been told that this medication could make them taste like a copper penny? That would be the only thing that has changed in my daily routine, I just wanna make sure that there is nothing more serious going on with me.
Avatar f tn I've been doing some research on prometrium . I was prescribed prometrium since the month of Feb. In Feb.,I ovulated with the help of clomid and prometrium. My progesterone levels were 34. In March my cycle never came and I contacted my Dr on Apr. 9 letting her know I never had my cycle. She schedule me to take some test to take . On 14 my cycle visited and was very weird . her instructions for the prometrium is to take on cycle day 16 and continue to take until a cycle comes.
1564074 tn?1334490908 He has put me on the oral prometrium but I think I might call and ask for he suppositories. I have read they work better. I am going in for another HCG tomorrow but he is supposed to check my progesterone again in 5 days. Mommyjeep11- are you taking it orally or with a suppository?
Avatar f tn s the same thing - but I was on 200mg oral prometrium for the first 13 weeks. I took it at night so I never noticed any side effects except for the one day I forgot to take it at night and took it in the morning. Then I was super dizzy and probably shouldn't have driven! So then are you going to have to take it multiple times during the day? I literally took it right before I went to sleep and was fine. Good luck.
Avatar f tn has he put you on any medications like prometrium to raise the levels? That medication is the only way I can successfully carry a baby in the first trimester and without it I m/c.
907699 tn?1251630847 I am on 50mg of progesterone suppositories that have to be made at a compounding pharmacy. I get mine shipped and they are working cuz my temps have gone up. The suppositories go straight to the area needed from what I hear.
Avatar f tn I was also on crinone (once a day), plus oral prometrium, but my RE never checked my progesterone levels after transfer. From what I've understood, blood tests are not always accurate when on vaginal supplements, since the vaginal supplements basically delivers all the hormones down there, right where it's needed, without going through your entire blood stream first (like the injections do). You could always ask for prometrium as an addition, though...just as an added precaution.
