Avatar n tn One question in my mind is whether he had a stroke which caused him to fall, or he fell and struck his head and sustained a concussion or bleed inside the brain which, in turn caused the dementia. You need to question his physicians. Adderall is a stimulant, and the idea that it might increase awareness is not unreasonable, however it will also cause agitation, nervousness and sleeplessness.

With each additional episode, the risk of developing dementia increased, the study found.

Avatar f tn My 82 yr old grandmother was rushed to er room 22 days ago - she was in a nursing home because of diabetes which will go from 40 to 500 in an instant and the beginning stages of dementia. During that time she had a chest tube put into her left lung for a hole that showed up and fluid retention.
Avatar m tn In 1892, Czechoslovakian neurologist Arnold Pick first documented a type of dementia in which degeneration of cells occurs in the cerebral cortex (the outer layer of the brain) where cognitive and behavioral functions are controlled. Unlike Alzheimer's, Pick's disease is very often diagnosed in patients who are not yet 65. Studies have shown that certain gene mutations prompt loss of a protein called progranulin (PGRN). When this protein remains low, cerebral cortex cell death occurs.
148588 tn?1465778809 It now makes more sense to me that CerefolinNAC would help dementia patients. If n-acetylcysteine can help the liver heal/de-tox, it probably helps regulate the overproduction of this protein beta amyloid. Just thankful Doc Kadir is a top notch neuro' who's way ahead of the curve with stuff like this and willing to Rx 'off label'. He swears he's not txing me for dementia. Really.

Avatar n tn I am being met with resistance and am concerned that the attending physician is completely in the dark about several studies regarding the negative effects of these particular drugs in elderly patients with dementia, or any helpful alternatives. Are there any alternatives to using antipsychotic medications in this case? I have a hard time believing he is being kept in this state for other than that it makes him less work for the staff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn Statins dissolve cholesterol, and memories are stored in a similiar class of substances. In some patients Statins are absolutely necessary, but they are often overprescribed. There is sufficient literature on the internet that will enable you to make your own decision. As Red_Star stated, there are more than five good reasons not to worry about cholesterol. There is evidence that statin-induced dementia can be reversed if the statin is discontinued.
Avatar f tn My father is in the final stages of dementia. He can no longer hold anything or walk. He quit speaking about 4 years ago. I just was recently told that he no longer chews. This has been for about 6 weeks. His food is thickened so he can swallow it. He has lost about 20 pounds in 5 months. His albumin level is 2.7, and 2.5 is sometimes the criteria for hospice care. My question is, how much longer before he loses his ability to swallow?

Avatar n tn Nothing in this story make sense. Tobramycin is an antibiotic. cyclogel is a dilating medication. Its not used to treat infections. Few things will progress that fast to lost eyes. You need to discuss the case with the ophthalmologist and then present the case at grand rounds for discussion by all the medical attending.
Avatar f tn and it turned out to be a urine infection and pneumonia. You mother is falling over - this can be due to balance problems either from infections in the inner ears or spinal issues. Elderly people an easily get low iron levels and low Vitamin B12 levels, this can also lead to feelings of depression, change of character and forgetfulness. Low iron levels can make her feel very depressed and with her falling over, it may be that there is no enough oxygen getting to the brain.
Avatar n tn The fact that he was sent to hospice, a place for people nearing death, and not a nursing home, where dementia patients are sent, indicates they weren't telling you the whole truth. Dementia patients can live for years. My mother, for instance, 20 years. Doctors tend to avoid discussions of death, and many, at best, allude to what is occurring: end of life.
